1.
Can you advise what year the TA503 was made please. The month and year of manufacture are on a label on the rear face. Many thanks.
April 2008
2. Markbass TA503 - now £400 As far as I know, this is the precursor to the current Little Mark series, and made in Italy unlike its modern contemporaries. It has a dual tube preamp and SS power amp with semi parametric EQ (one knob selects the specific frequency within a given band(bass, low mid, high mid, highs) and the other boasts or cuts it). Great sounding head, bucket loads of headroom and a really warm, natural sound. Two Speakon outputs, DI out and level, tuner, effects loop etc. These are currently out of production and don't come by too often. Used to be £1k+ when new and I'm asking for 500 Comes with case and I will be willing to ship. Markbass NY122 - £450 SOLD I'll post the head but I'd much prefer for the cab to be collected. It's currently based in Wrexham, North Wales but I can get it up to Leeds if necessary, and I'll travel a short distance of you want to meet me for it.
3.
I only rarely use a pick, and when I do it is way quieter. I'm going to suggest something completely different to all the above. You are, like me, probably playing too hard fingers style. I dig in big time. I know I'm not supposed to, have read up on the theory, and have even practiced turning up and playing more gently. I just can't stick to it, and quickly get back to digging in.
Definitely true of me, especially live (go full Geddy at times). But this last gig was Americana/blues/country stuff and I was playing pretty lightly with fingers when I noticed the difference. Cheers though, it's something to bear in mind in future though I'm thinking EQ could be a potential solution. Since fingers obviously give a rounder tone I'm guessing the stronger fundamental is giving the illusion of higher volume, compared to a pick.
4. I do use different gauges depending what I'm doing, ranging between .60 and 1.14. Definitely a different tonal quality but only a slight volume difference
5. Thanks everyone, I think I'll spend some time working on my technique and see if that makes much difference. I've also got a couple of different pick sizes so I'll experiment with that too. As others have said, due to all the variables with my bass, hands etc it's probably just going to be a case of trial and error.
6.
An EQ pedal will also give you volume control and a way to redress any severe tonal differences (say, a very deep finger tone which dissapears with a plectrum for some reason, like on my T-bird!).
This is pretty much the problem I'm having. The deeper tone disappears when I switch to playing with a pick (which I suppose is natural) but I find I drop way down in the mix.
7. When switching between using a pick and fingers during a set, how can I keep a consistent volume? I've noticed a drop in volume when switching to a pick, which I suppose make sense due to the inherent characteristics of the two different styles, but it's still inconvenient. Compressor? EQ? Boost pedal? If anyone can give me some input before I splash the cash, that'd be grand

9. I am, just Rickmansworth is a bit far flung for me to get to at the moment. Cheers mate, let me know if anything falls through, good luck
10. Can anyone recommend me any bass tutors in the North Wales/Cheshire/Manchester sort of area? I'm based in Wrexham, North Wales but willing to travel for the right teacher.
11. Anyone know how Patrick Paige II gets that sub/swelling effect at about 1:32 in "Gabby" by The Internet? I didn't even notice it much until I played it through my speakers the other day and was taken aback by the overwhelming fatness of it. On a side note, great band if you're into the whole Hip-Hop/Neo-Soul stuff. Great bass playing throughout their last album Ego Death, I think Thundercats brother used to be in the band. I think a few members are also ex-Odd Future too. Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Liq2H5jeAE
12.
Can you send a pic of the fret board close up? Was it a pro defret?
I've added a photo to the original post, hopefully it shows what you need to know. I know little of the neck, the defretting job seems to be pretty good, some of the material used to fill in the frets has spilt slightly into the grain of the fingerboard but it's not too noticeable and I actually think it looks quite nice. I don't think it's a pro defret but it appears whoever did it did a decent job. There's some wear to the board as you'd expect of a fretless instrument but nothing major, everything seems to be in good nick to me
13. Now cash only. No offers on trades please
14.
Wrexham and Leeds
Correct! forgot to mention. Travel between the two often. I think Shuker bass guitars do a reasonable price for refretting instruments!
