3.
That's a super clean neck/body transition. Really impressed with this build. I keep looking at the bits of wood in my garage - probably best if they just remain bits of wood in my garage!!!
Thanks! I'd say you should attack the bits of wood with various tools, but be aware it might lead to an addiction.
  4. The neck is in and the transition has been carved. Next time doing a set neck where the neck wood matches the body wood I'll be sure to add a accent veneer. Also the bridge has been slotted for the piezo and screws that will fix the bridge in place once intonation has been set.

Decided to try making something of a feature of the scarf joint. Flame maple, mahogany veneer sandwich

Thanks for keeping me motivated Today I did the cut for the scarf joint and did some more carving... couldn't resist a bit of premature grain popping.
Expect the grain on this to really pop once it's oiled...
I hope so too. The thuya is a bit of a pain to work with so it'd better be worth it Thanks for the comments!

The body is glued up and today I cut the shape out, some shaping of the outline remains but it's close. Then I had to deal with the quite serious thickness issue I had from trying to use a band saw that was not up to the task to bookmatch the thuya top & back. The thuya wood clogs sandpaper in no time and does not like to be planed so I used the shinto rasp to do most of the work and then just some sanding to finish it off. I also did some carving tests Here's a pic showing some of the thickness inconsistencies Front and back

Thanks for the comment! The choice of scale length was down a couple of things, mostly that I wanted to try flatwound strings for all eight strings and I figured a wound G string (octave) might not want to stretch to 30'' or more. It might not be able to handle the tension at 28'' either but... maybe
  13. So, this is what I've got this month. A bit different from what I usually get up to, both in terms of process and result. It's a bit rough around the edges and could have been better with more time spent on it but it goes together with the picture reasonably well https://soundcloud.c...mbs-like-donald

  16.
Very impressive
Why, thank you
  17. Spent a few hours carving today Front Back Neck
  18. Thanks for the replys! Those are good points, there is a neck angle, will do some tests shortly to see if its in the ballpark but as i will be making the bridge out of wood I can adjust the bridge height after the neck angle.
  19. Neck pocket! For a template I used three pieces of wood double-stick taped flush with the neck pocket already in the top, then I used chisels and this cute little planer that I hadn't really found a use for until now to clean up the pocket and make it square. Had never done one before but it turned out as well as I could have hoped. The plan is to do a set neck. Ive got a small, tenths of a mm, gap at the top of the neck pocket between the neck and the wall of the pocket but as the table wood is so dark some wood glue and saw dust should make that pretty invisible... What do I need to know before glueing in the neck?
