  1. Oh that brings back so many memories. That combo and a Tokai Hard Puncher were the sum total of my equipment for much of the 1980s.

Hard to believe but that 100W was more than sufficient for everywhere we played.

Missing its Stingray and Carlsbro nameplates from the front otherwise I'd be tempted.

  2. I think we all know about these so I'll spare the superlatives!

To the best of my knowledge this one is all original. Apart from I've put new felt rings under the strap buttons (the old ones had disappeared) and it's sporting some Fender NPS 45 - 105 round wound strings.

It does have some oxidisation to metalwork. And dings commensurate with its age and having lived a life. Difficult to photo close up so I'll describe where they are and maybe you can zoom in.

    • head stock under E tuner (3mm)
    • neck rear lower 1st fret (3mm)
    • body front above tug bar to left and to right (1.5mm and 3mm)
    • body front and bottom behind bridge (4 x 5mm)
    • body rear above and to right of neck plate (10mm and 5mm)
    • body rear under neck plate (buckle rash)
    • body rear top right as you look at it (12mm)

Bass weighs only 3.762 Kg (8.3 lbs). I zeroed the scales with the Sisley book on it so the bass would balance better in case you're wondering.

Currently collection from Skipton only or I can meet you within a reasonable distance.

Price is £600 and it does have to be £600 I'm afraid.

  3. Vintage VJ74 Icon Series Jazz Style Bass Guitar.

Absolute top quality parts and construction

Condition is used but in excellent condition, little further road-wearing has taken place after that it came with.

Bass weighs in at almost exactly 4 kg (8.8 lbs). Light for a Jazz.

At the moment I am unable to ship so this has to be cash on collection from Skipton. However I am prepared to drive out a fair distance to meet you if needs be.

Was that exposed red & black wiring for the speaker really how they used to it?

Yes I believe so. The power lead would originally have been black though.

I’m interested to know about the 120V input. Do you have to use it with a transformer, were they changed for the UK market but the label not or doesn’t it matter?

  5. I'd seen that and was very tempted. I don't need it at all but it's such a great thing and it's nearby in Leeds.

Re. the Kitchens sticker on the back - there used to be a Kitchens Music Shop in Leeds so it looks like it hasn't travelled very far.

Or at least ended up back where it started off.

  6. Looks fantastic. I bought a p-bass from this seller early last year, collected from his house, exactly as described. Proper gigging bassist as well, we had a good chat and he showed me some of his other gear.

Not sure I agree with his comment about him being a great age though, he’s about my age!

Hi, just looking at photos - is there a split in the body where the neck has been put in? Or is that just light reflection?

Also, does the tone knob work? For some reason I remember somewhere about the tone being disabled on tb models?

    Thanks.

I can't see where you mean but there are no splits in the body so it must be the light. The tone knob definitely does something!

I wasn’t aware that Vintage produced a maple neck without the vintage tint. The newest models with the matching headstocks have non-tinted necks but I think all the older ones are tinted. Certainly the one on my white one is

I think my neck is actually tinted, it just got away with a very light tint. How it ended up on a black body is still a mystery though.

  8. It's with a very heavy heart that I offer this up for sale. So soon after acquiring it as well. It's my ideal bass in every respect (p-bass, black, maple, chunky neck, top quality etc.) bar one. The weight, it's just too much for my feeble and aged frame.

I bought the bass a month ago off a well known auction site, the details are still up there if you search completed listings for item 183639229142. The seller described the condition as "new". It wasn't, the strings were dead, it was dirty and there were a few marks to the body. However, not complaining, it was still pretty good and I was happy to get it.

I've now cleaned it and set it up with a new set of Fender 7350Ms. it's playing and sounding great. But I did band practice with it this week and my shoulder still hasn't recovered. It weighs, what some might consider reasonable, 4.24kg (9.35 lbs). Anything over 8.5lbs and I'm struggling nowadays.

Pictures below. There is one question I can't answer though. To all intents and purposes this is the V4MTB apart from the headstock doesn't say Signature Series and bear his name. AFAIK JHS don't otherwise offer the V4 with black body and maple neck so I'd love to know the story behind this one.

Last thing, at the moment, this has to be collection from Skipton, though I am prepared to drive out a fair distance to meet you if needs be.

[Edit to add - about the marks - there are a couple of very small dings bottom edge and a bit of very light surface scratching rear of body. Neither would photograph. Any marks you can see in the pictures are reflections.]

Have to say I really like the look of the VJ74.

Might start keeping my eyes peeled for one floating around 2nd hand.

Do. I'm really, really impressed with it.

I spent an enjoyable afternoon setting both of these up yesterday.

Having said the VJ74 was spot in, it wasn't quite. Someone had over-tightened the truss rod and in doing so rounded off where the hex wrench goes almost. I managed to get enough purchase to loosen it off and get a bit of relief back into the neck. Still not complaining at the price though.

The V4 definitely needed attention and I put a new set of RS66LDs on it. It looks and feels great now. But oh the weight!

I keep on looking at the V4 Tony Butler sig P bass , is your P bass full Fender thickness?

The Tony Butler is an excellent bass, a real quality instrument, and a real chunker of a neck. It`s pretty much an exact copy of a 70s Precision.

Chunky necks all round. P bass is full thickness and the J is thicker than I've ever seen. Quite surprised by that, but it suits me nicely.

I'm thinking my V4 is actually the Tony Butler but without the signature. As mentioned in the original post I haven't seen another standard black V4 with a maple neck.

I'm still part way through getting it set up but I'm fearing ultimately it's going to be too heavy for me.

So unfortunately I doubt I'll be gigging it. I may keep it for studio work or I may move it on again. Early days yet though.

  11. Well NB couple of Days if truth be told.

Vintage Icon VJ74 (Jazz) and Vintage Reissued V4 (Precision) acquired within a few days of each other via the well known auction site.

I'm almost exclusively a P-Bass player but I really like the look of the VJ74 from its photos, the price was good and I didn't have to travel far to collect. I've not been disappointed, it's brilliant. Previous owner had it set up spot on as well so I've not had to touch it.

The V4 is a bit of a mystery. It's not the Tony Butler and I've only seen the maple neck on the white body. I can only speculate what may have happened, if anyone knows I'd be pleased to hear it?

This one is going to need a bit of work to get playing right. But at a total spend of £295 plus a bit of diesel for the two I'm not complaining!

  12. Perfect accompaniment to your aged, roadworn or reliced p or j!

    Authentic features include:

    - plenty of marks and scuffing
    - tarnished chrome
    - no key and one catch missing
    - one "foot" broken off
    - couple of rivets replaced by screws to hold handle on

    and the pièce de résistance

    - one hinge replaced by bass string ("A" I believe)

Surprisingly tidy inside and still capable of doing the job.

Collection from sunny Skipton or I could meet you part way, up to 40 mins or so.

Might be able to post later in the week but can't commit to that just now.
