  1. 10 years ago I was playing in a five piece pub covers band that went out for a minimum of £300 but more usually £400

Take in to account 10 years inflation can there be any doubt that pub gig rates have fallen?

Like people have said, function bands are a different story

They really are, when I compared to the Player series the Player series felt really cheap in comparison, basically felt like Squiers with Fender decals

    Yes I agree

Proper basses have truss rod adjusters at the end of the neck not in the headstock 😂

And....... I found a crack in the finish of the bass that I did not see when I brought the bass in the shop😥

I went back to the shop half expecting to keep the Vintera as I got it for a good price and it is a cracking bass and I spoke to them about it and played about half a dozen basses P basses in the same price range and a little bit over  however compared to the Vintera Precision they all felt a bit cheap, didn't sound as nice, didn't look as nice, didn't play as nice (the Vintera practically plays itself) and had satin finishes and narrow necks (both of which I really dislike), long story short I kept the Vintera P bass.

Happy that I tried out the competition and happy that I made the right choice in keeping the bass.

These basses and their predecessors, the classic series, are absolute bargains

i like American vintage reissues and the new original series but to be honest they are twice the price but not twice as good

To be honest this must be just about the only bass where I haven't wanted to change the pickguard, my camera doesn't show the colours that well but the gold pickguard is gorgeous in person

I agree with you - like most things Fender - it’s great the way it left the factory - why mess with perfection?

Always makes me smile when people tar 70s Fenders with one big crappy brush, as if something deeply disturbing happened at the Fender plant on the stroke of midnight on Dec 31, 1969. Still, I guess it helps keep the prices down a little 😄

    Yes this would be wrong

Ive has loads of 70’s precision basses and have kept just two that both happen to be early 70’s sunburst basses - a rosewood and a maple

I sold most of the others to Martin Petersen at the Bass Gallery

My observations based on these precisions is that on average there is a deterioration through this decade and in to the early 80’s in the following areas:-

    1. Weight increases from the ideal 8 to 8 1/2 lbs to over 10lbs

    2. The tightness of the neck pocket diminishes

    3. The natural resonance when played acoustically diminishes

    4. Cost cutting measures increase - single ply guides, three hole bridges, less substantial tuners, etc

    5. Problems with body finishes especially black

    6. Decreasing attention to body contours so that bodies become more angular

Its against this background that I find the early vintage reissue series started in 1982 such a breath of fresh air and a return to form at fender

For anyone interested in AVRIs I started this gear thread here

    And this thread on Talkbass

  6. Great basses

Continuing on from the Classic Series

If you want a p bass you simply can’t go wrong with these

Yours is in one of the best colours

If it were mine, I’d consider fitting a 10 hole white pick guard which would frame the body colour

The AVRI '60s Jazz bass and the Precisions sound great to me, but the '70s one I found fairly lacklustre. Didn't sound much like a real '70s Jazz bass. Same with the Vintera. The '60s one sounds much closer to the original than the '70s one.

    Yes I agree

Im talking 57 and 62 AVRI p basses and 62/64 jazzes

The Fullerton era ones are close to what is now custom shop which are also good

As for 70s ones, as a touring tech and player, I saw very few good ones. Some were dogs. My own '78 weighed 10lbs and had a neck that gave me a serious RSI.

An AVRI would be a much better bet.

    Exactly

Some really interesting history about G&L here if you're keen to read up on it. I really enjoyed going down the rabbit hole with this bass. I will keep my SB1 forever and fully believe that the USA and Tribute G&L basses are one of the best kept secrets in the business. Those that know how good they are know!

I’ve just got one of these @ped

    Give it a try

    @dub_junkie is a fan too
