18th century composition rules
When learning the rules for 4 part harmony, it was quite annoying to find out that Bach's 4 part harmonies break the rules all over the place 😡

To be perfectly honest I am not impressed.
I shall try not to let it affect my day.
I'm not promising anything mind.

I'm not trying to prove anything, but it shows that musical theory can be directly applied in composition.
Also that making vacuous statements like:
7 hours ago, Baloney Balderdash said:music theory should be used to analyze music, not to write music, your ears should.
is rather silly.
Not least because if I know (for example) tapping a triad over a particular chord sequence will work, I know what it will sound like, but mainly because 'don't tell me what to do!'

And I am certain it would have been a much better solo had it been based on your hearing and intuition, rather than theory.
Only one way to test that. Bass solo kicks in 2:25. See what you think.

In a covers band, what I play can be due to the band lineup.

Yes, I know it's only been a few months since the last one, but is anyone thinking of dates for this year? I was royally narked at missing the 2023 event.

Many years ago, I brought a song to the band. As we were going through it, the guitarist asked what happens next. As a joke I said "bass solo". Nobody laughed or said 'no', so I thought "bugger, I've got to do a bass solo".
Probably 90% of what I came up with was performed on the spot due to my knowing a bit of music theory.

. . . . what band did he play in?
It was a duo with Brahms. Traditional Cockney sing-alongs.

I played The Wheatsheaf back in the mid 80's. That was the one in Dunstable ?
Happy days touring with a broken leg.

My mate was stabbed in there 20 years later.

In a degrees of separation brush with greatness, my mother is a piano teacher... Her first teacher was the German pianist Emil von Sauer, who had been a pupil of Franz Liszt!
When I was at college, I had a music teacher who was taught by Bela Bartok.

This may be pushing it a bit - but had the quickest of words with Toby Jones in London on Saturday. Now I know he's an actor rather than a musician. But you have to see Barbarian Sound System. 😳
I saw him in Every Good Boy Deserves Favour. He was playing an orchestra conductor, he had the moves right!

Apparently, Kaiser Chiefs is the name of a South African football team
The football team Leeds United bought Lucas Radabe (and Phil Masinga) from.
They're Leeds fans MOT!

Yesterday I was in Ghost Town Sound studio in north London with The Royal Blues.
We were in to do 3 songs, but just to get the bass and drums down. Vox and guitar were booked for another session.
My plan was to use 2 basses to get a Nashville tic tac type sound, with one of my Shuker's and my Rob Allen Mouse. But as there was a bass in the studio and I was using public transport I just took the Mouse.
The studio bass was a nice looking vintage Fender P, pics at the bottom. There was a bit of adjustment using a 34", as my basses are either mid or short scale, but the problem was an action you could drive a bus under, and that is not the angle of the pic, the string alignment is out. It sounded great, but perhaps not suitable for the tic tac, I'll see how much of my doubling ends up in the mix.
The session did not start well. The drummer was having difficulty and it took 4 hours to get enough drums to be able to compile a full take. After a food break we did another song, which was recorded quite quick, then we went back to the first song and he nailed it.
After that the last song was done in plenty of time. I DI'd in to the desk, and my bass parts were done after a couple of run throughs.
Pub after. Good day 😁
btw I asked permission to post pics of the bass. It's what he used when he was in Echobelly.

Following on from the How Was Your Gig/Rehearsal/Audition threads, it's about time we had a How Was Your Recording Session thread.
Details to include:
Pic and/or description of what you had for breakfast that day (because what's life without whimsy?).
Name of band.
Name of studio.
Gear used.
Tell us how it went.

The bands I'm in I found through JoinMyBand and one of the Facebook musicians groups.

I got the “thanks, but no thanks” text this afternoon which is a bummer
Nevermind, I enjoyed the audition and playing some songs that I wouldn’t normally play
At least you got the text. So many people think ghosting is the answer 😡

Was really gassing for this when I first saw/read about it. But after reading the reviews and seeing the demos (and the price) not so much now.

At university in the mid-2000s I shared a stage/bill a few times with 2010s pop-star Ellie Golding (Eleanor-Jane Goulding, I think she was at the time). These were tiny pub and university campus gigs, mostly for free beer and attention.
She was a decent guitar player back then and used to do sets of singer-songwriter-y stuff (Ani DiFranco, Joni Mitchell, etc.). Could never have predicted the trajectory her career has taken.
Her brother was/is a member here.

Kaiser Chiefs last night.
Mini gig album promotion thing. There was another gig after, 2nd house type thing.
They played about 10 songs, some new and some classics. Not bad for a bunch of blokes.
