having read a few threads on here recently about power amps, pre amps and rack gear I decided to have a go at using my bass pod xt live as a preamp into a power amp. I bought a used QSC RMX850a off eBay and a cheap rack sleeve to put it in. It’s too deep for a standard 2u rack case.

Mrs W is out today so I’ve had the chance to play loud bass and experiment with it. I’d previously put a lot of time into tinkering with amp models in the bass pod.

so far I’m over the moon. Keeping all the tine shaping in the bass pod seems to make more sense than having eq controls everywhere. I like the simplicity of that and it allows me to focus on just the bass and the bas pod.

I think the combination of my Ray34 which I’ve fitted Delano hybrid pickups to (passive jazz and active Ray) strung with cobalt flats into the bass pod power amp and VK210 is going to be awesome. Can’t wait to try it out with the band in just over a week. Probably some initial frustration followed by lots of tweaking.

anyway thought it might be of interest.

    cheers

  2. Ashdown RM 800 EVO II for sale.

I bought this amp new from Musik Produktiv in September last year.

Initial was a bit a disappointing and I put it back in its box until January this year when I sent it back to Ashdown for the following issues-

    apparent low output

lack of volume increase after 10 o’clock on the volume pot

    noisy headphone output

Dave Green at Ashdown has made corrections to the VU sensitivity and adjusted the input sensitivity. This was the cause of the apparent low output. It has been bench tested at Ashdown and is outputting the full 800W. The master volume pot was also replaced with one that gives a linear increase in volume as it’s turned up. The taper on the original gave most of the volume increase in the first third of its operation (apparently to impress people trying them out in shops).

it was then returned a second time as the noises noted when using headphones was still there if much much quieter. It has been checked again by Ashdown and returned.

I believe there is some signal interference from the operation of the green light in the VU meter. It is now very very quiet and necessitates a significant increase in the treble control and some use of compression to hear it. It appears from other threads that this noise is common to this model when using headphones. Perhaps my cab is transparent enough to hear it in normal use. It’s  not audible when playing with a band. I suspect that most of the EVO IIs are like this.

fundamentally this is an as new unit that has been fully set up by Ashdown and given the all clear.

happy to post at buyers expense. It still has all the original and well proven packaging.9F42E941-780B-4E76-AF28-A2AADEAF11EF.thumb.jpeg.796219e5aba83aca7102cc1ce93f4c4c.jpeg8329AA0F-4E4A-4CE0-8E73-FA36F197CCD6.thumb.jpeg.90f2c3f3ed5055d8f6a7b28df15ac707.jpegEC10433D-4549-4BA9-9357-8E2F591B1EB7.thumb.jpeg.f284e224c63199cd317c3ec093ce1650.jpegCF94B380-E75C-4BC7-9CAF-C6BC8923B116.thumb.jpeg.fbd9c534c330732676c16060b98c37ba.jpeg089D639B-9C0C-4A2C-88F6-5014BD6314E5.thumb.jpeg.f955629658a681259150fd52820bdf15.jpeg1CDBA0A8-E427-4DE4-B87F-F37F8050134A.thumb.jpeg.b8e85bf222a73914d05cc7c8128d0f6b.jpeg

Awesome, what power and amp and cab do you have? I think that sounds good, but I would like the option of having an EQable head if I ever don’t need the board.

I have a QSC RMX850 (which I paid too much for) feeding a Vanderkley 210 LNT. The power amp thing is a new venture for me so I’m sure there are others who’ll be able to advise better. I’m interested to see how I get on with mine and may end up adding a channel strip to give some easy eq adjustment without colouring the sound. I’m using an old line 6 bass pod xt live for preamp as it’s has amp modelling , eq, compression and effects all in one. If I get on with this arrangement I might upgrade to a lighter power amp.

i like being able to amplify the sound I hear in my headphones for practice.

be aware that I think I’m subconsciously convincing myself to build a full rack set up!

I bought one, and it was near-perfect for my live requirements. Unfortunately, both units I tried hummed something rotten, so the great sound and range of features were somewhat wasted in my situation.

Otherwise, as I said- near perfect!

Well it looks like you’re not the only one! -

If I see one come up really cheap it might be an interesting experiment. Shame as the features look great.

    I have one I don't use..

If you want to sell it (?) I could be interested dependant on price etc but would like to give my current set up a spin with the band and see how it fairs. Can’t do that for a about four weeks unfortunately 🙄

Yeah, and me but ended up buying a class ab power amp last night. This thread and the one about the sansamp into a QSC power amp coincided with me spending some time playing with the bass pod xt I’ve had for years but only really use as a headphone amp! With lots of tweaking you can get some great tones so plan is to go from the pod to the power amp and do all the shaping on the pod. If that works out I I might look into some other possibilities as I’d prefer a rack mounted pre/effects over the floor unit.

It’s arrived but only had a brief chance to try it out in the living room. Hopefully it’ll have enough wallop with the band. I’ve since read the bass pods can have a low output. I’ve got the amp in bridge mono to give 600 ish watts into the 8ohm cab. Sounds ace so far. Feel quite positive about this set up.

Well thanks a bunch you lot. Now you've got me fleaBay-searching for 'light weight power amplifier'

I also had a Focusrite Platinum Trakmaster Pro for a while. Beautifully pure-sounding, lovely EQ and still the best compressor I've ever used. Channel strips are brilliant if you want an uncoloured sound.

How does the eq work on those? All i can see is the mid scoop function?
