  1. Do all those magnets give the g string a chorus effect when played above 12th fret? My fretless jazz had a MM pickup between the jazz pickups but I had to take it out as all the magnets were affecting the intonation!

  2. Sounds like we might be getting the old band back together. Trouble is I’ve recently decided to focus on fretless so sold both my fretted basses. I don’t really want to get any more gear especially as they’re an unreliable bunch.
so who plays fretless in a rock/pop band and how do you find it in the mix?

  3. I only play fretless currently and my board is -

    tuner (Boss)

    Compressor (Seymour Duncan studio)

    reverb (HOF mini)

looper (tc ditto as of yesterday)

i have a bass clone but don’t really like using chorus as it messes with my intonation. I want to sharpen up not mask my mistakes 🤣

i got the looper from another basschatter yesterday and within a few hours my intonation was getting better. had great fun just looping a c major scale and noodling around over that.

for strings I really like cobalt flats. Plenty of mids, no finger squeak, no fingerboard marks.

  4. New pick up cover day (sorry I’m bored).

I fitted a Nordstrand MM4.2 between the stock pickups of my bitsa fretless jazz some time ago. Since the last band broke up I’ve sold my other basses to focus on improving my fretless technique. I have been really struggling with intonation on the g string above the 10th (fret). I realised I was getting a chorus effect on the strings from the excessive magnet pull. I tried adjusting everything to get rid of it but in the end decided to pull the MM pickup out which left a massive foil lined hole.
I considered making a ramp, changing the body, buying a new bass but in the end decided to try and find an empty no hole pickup cover. Couldn’t find any available in stock on the web but Aaron at Armstrong pickups sorted one for me for very little money 👍

  5. Anyone know what size Allen key is needed for the screws in the bottom of these hipshot tuners? They work loose and rattle so I need to take them out and put a bit of loctite on them. I have both metric and imperial Allen key sets but nothing fits!

If not I might be tempted to change them as they’re a bit graunchy in places and I don’t like the shape of the posts as it makes getting a tidy winding tricky.

£1500, or £150? Am I missing something? Simple looper pedal is something like tce Ditto. I am using a cheapo Valeton, after a Boss and a tce. It is good for instant feedback of my playing. Using it at home, not in band context.

Thanks - just changed it to £150👍

  7. I’m interested in getting a looper but have no idea. Probably just want something pretty basic to start with, all controls on the pedal. Budget up to £150

    recommendations would be appreciated please🙂

  8. All packed and ready to go is a bargain bundle of stuff that was destined for a fellow basschatter whose own sale fell through resulting in loss of funding for this. It’s all packed and ready to go so I’m hoping I might shift it as it is. I’d rather not split it - I just want shot of it hence a reduction in price to £135 including UK postage for -

  9. I have the previous (non pro) version of this. Absolutely fantastic for recording rehearsals. I used to record our band pretty much every week. The sound quality was superb - deep bass and sizzling hi hats in wide stereo. Some of the other band members had other units and their recordings were poor in comparison.

these can also be used as a four track recorder and can easily convert from .wav to mp3. If you want to share your files.

can’t recommend this enough if you want to capture the sound of your band.

  10. No longer playing in bands so it’s time to move on my QSC power amp. This is a quality class AB amp. Specs can be found here -

I bought this amp second hand as an ex demo unit. It arrived in the condition you can see in the photos.

for full disclosure when I first received the amp it slid off  my cab and landed on my knee which pushed on the channel 1 gain knob. This forced the pot open. I pressed the pot back together and it’s been fine ever since (not even a crackle).
I used the amp in bridge mono with only the channel 1 gain pot in use and never had an issue.

I’ve reset the amp to stereo mode and tested both channels which are working fine.

Its priced to reflect the tatty casing and the fact I had damaged the gain pot.

  11. Update - I bought uk_lefty’s HOF mini. Sounds fantastic and is just what I needed. Whatever sound is in it is spot on. I daren’t start playing with TonePrints or I’ll disappear down a rabbit hole.
just a smidge of reverb - barely perceptible, really brings my fretless sound together.
