1.
I think there's probably a difference between one's dream bass and one's perfect bass. I probably own my perfect bass/basses with my custom Maruszczyks, but I've always lusted after a Mk 1, Wal, fretless. However, given that I'm not great with heavy basses, this might not turn out to be what I've dreamt of, but I'd be happy to find out
Agreed! The Wal would surely be close to the top of my wish list but I'd have to wind the clock back at least a couple of decades to be able to gig it
 2. What's that comment about hindsight being the only 20/20 vision?
 3. I'm with you mate - I love it! You certainly can't ignore it
 4.
Ashdown make outstanding amps, heralded the world over. Whoever told you to avoid them probably has no idea, or is going on the advice of someone else who has no idea. I find there's an awful lot of gullibility in the bass world. An example would be; the ABM 500 is sh*t according to Brian, who plays in a god awful blues jam band, has poor technique, doesn't know what tone will cut through a mix, uses the eq to set a bedroom sound that won't cut it in a live situation etc.. the same amp is used by Nate Mendel in the biggest band in the world. Many people unfortunately listen to Brian.
Good points well made Dave!!
 5. Hey Al, I think the subject has already been comprehensively covered. Just chipping in to say that my experience of Ashdown's after-sales support has been exemplary. They picked up on a casual comment (not really a criticism) I posted re the somewhat noisy fan on the RM500 EVO I recently bought from Lozz and offered to replace it FOC. That's now been done to my complete satisfaction. As already advised, I'd recommend you try this amp and the AMB 600 (not tried one myself). The blacker-than-black newbie looks awesome but I'd need some persuading to spend the extra cash - mind you, I'm generally open to persuasion
 6. Took the Gillett to rehearse some new stuff with the 7-pc original material band I'm in last night. Thankfully the sounds and the look were very well received - actually the guys & gals (who don't normally notice or care much about what I'm doing) were blown away, and it's perfect for the folky/unplugged end of our musical spectrum. I prefer a solid-bodied electric for the rocky and funky stuff so I've rigged up a foot-switching system that means both basses are set up and ready to play throughout the set. All I have to do is take one off, put the other on and stomp on a switch - or two if I want to change channels on my amp as well as swapping basses. More than enough time to do that while our glorious leader fannies around with his guitars, tunings and banter Here's a few more pics - taken with truss-rod cover still removed after yesterday's set-up. Note the threaded brass inserts that the tiny cover screws go into - how cool is that?!
 7. Correct - although the (active) tone control does a nice job of dialling the 'fatness' in and out. I don't have a lot of experience with electro-acoustics (or double basses) but this one comes much closer to the DB vibe than the ones I've played.
 8. I'd be chuffed if somebody referred to me as 'cute' (which isn't likely to happen!). Is it beyond the realms of possibility that the receptionist in question might be equally pleased if she knew? Or would she consider it a coded message for something sexual, sinister and diminishing?
 9. Well, mine anyway! I've had serious GAS for this since I played it at the south-west bash. Actually, before that: as soon as I saw it on Michael Gillett's website. This really is a no-compromise beastie and it's now got the lowest action of any bass I've ever had. I'll post more thoughts and pic's when I've finished playing and looking at it - don't hold your breath "]http://
 10. I must say that I understand the latest comments from Sibob and dyerseve and can appreciate both positions. Rushing to judgment can be dangerous and is all too easy when communicating remotely as we do on forums.
 11.
You're missing the point. Probably quite unintentionally, but you are missing the point.
Nope, not missing it; just not accepting the validity of it.
"Nice tits", "fantastic arse". Sincere compliments, how could they possibly cause trouble?
But the OP didn't say that - or anything that's equivalent to that IMHO. Let's have a bit of tolerance here!
 12. It's a funny old world where saying something sincerely nice about somebody gets you in bother.
 13. Thanks for posting dyerseve - I enjoyed listening to (and looking at) the young lady in question.
 14.
It's an optical illusion caused by Trace Elliot heft.
Yep, it's actually enough to cause a warp in space/time.
 15.
Can I have one free please
You can join the queue - at the back
 16.
Not tried one but heard they're "the best a man can get"...
If you'd seen me you'd know that a close shave isn't what I'm after!! (Looking for the 'bearded old man' smiley but not finding one on here.)
 17.
Dear God! I bet you thought you looked the bees knees back in the day. Awesome photo.
He only got it last week
 18.
Was that his technique for putting you to sleep?
Certainly a way to relax the patient. My anaesthetist was a biker and knew I was as he'd spotted me reading a bike mag in the waiting area. So that's what he/we talked about during the op and it definitely helped take my mind off the pain I was feeling. Turned out later that he hadn't got the anaesthetic dose quite right so it was a bit like being lightly tortured
 19.
Scrumpy Mike is - or was - selling a pretty good TE set-up on here, tale a look, decently priced.
Thanks for the plug Lozz. Yep, still up - with a price reduction even! Never played an SMX head but my SMC300 GP7 sounds damn good. Also, the 1 x 15 cab it comes with is what TE described at the time as their new 'compact' design; it isn't by today's standards but its size and weight make it a manageable one-man lift compared to the other cabs around then.
 20.
No more struggling with big, heavy speakers and a great sound, no brainer!
Got it in one!
 21.
Got a couple of questions: What is the difference between a Jake and a Jake L? Is it correct to assume a 34" scale unless otherwise stated? Thanks.
Lightness achieved by a chambered body. Not sure whether other weight-saving measures are part of the standard L spec; my Elwood L also has lightweight tuners and alu bridge but I spec'd those. Re standard scale length of a Jake L, I believe it's 34" but check on the Public Peace website, where the description of each model clearly states what's available scale-wise.
 22.
Didn't you try one yourself at the Bash, or are you looking a buying one?
Yes I did, but it wasn't set up right for me and I didn't spend much time on it.
 23. Looking for some feedback from anybody who's played a Gillett electro-acoustic bass. What do you think of the playability, sounds and looks, and what sort of stuff are you using it for? If you bought one, what made you do it - or if you didn't, what stopped you? Thanks, Mike
 24.
Well surgery done, in and out in half an hour, here was me expecting to have a great big pressure bandage, and he shoves a plaster on it!!! He seems to think that a gig in 17 days should be ok and to start playing a little bit in a day or two!
You've got off more lightly than I did - especially on my second one. Sounds like a key-hole job but didn't think they could do carpals that way.
