The SimS PUPs are lovely, as are the basses themselves. Took me a long time to appreciate how to use the PUPs, easy to forget that when you play a Precision you address is differently to how you address a Jazz or a 'Ray, and I've tended to use dead flats on Precisions, zingy rounds on Jazzes and lively flats on 'Rays over the years, plus of course the baked-in tone in a 'Ray circuit is very different to standard active Jazz circuits. I started out with an Enfield FL where so much of the tone is in the fingers, moved to fretted where the differences were more tangible, and now with both I see the PUP switching as pretty awesome bunch of preset options that may not replicate the three basses 100% but provide options way above what you'd get from any single preamp (and of course on both instruments I get to to choose both PUP and preamp settings).
Thanks for the info. I’ll consider a pair of these for next bonus! I love the versatility and endless options. Might go passive only and see how I get on.

Love the jazz with the two sims pickups in it. How do they sound? I’ve been tempted by these before as the concept is brilliant but I’ve never heard a demo that I was really impressed with.

Hell of an archive! Thanks for contributing to the community and for helping us to make better gear choices!

That looks great, if the electronics are quiet you’re onto a winner. Grain on the neck looks wonderful.
Andy Irvine has bought a load of these and installed some similar mods. He raves about them for value for money, even after spending a load on upgrades. Passive tone does add a lot of options and is worth considering. I had the vtc installed on a metro I had years ago and used it all the time. -

Btw. I'm not totally sure that the price on this isn't a typo.
The only new guitar I've ever seen with a comparable price had real diamond fingerboard markers and a mammoth tusk ivory nut.

Might be worth trying another set of strings? I wouldn’t discount it. I’ve had intonation probs that went away with a new set. Otherwise you’ve described all the options. Sounds like the bridge isn’t correctly placed to allow enough adjustment given the design of the bridge.

Hope you get it sorted. Something to consider is trying to bargain for a gift voucher and not a straight refund. £40 gift voucher will cost Thomann less than a £30 refund. I’ve done this before and spent it on accessories which I was happy about and the shop was happy about.

I like this. That metal control plate/ scratch plate combo is very Yamaha bb. Did he used to play one?

Great result! Julian is one of the most trustworthy gents in the biz. This looks amazing.

Ok that made sense in my head. 🤪

This is a brilliant review! I’m glad it worked out for you. It sounds like they’ve made a creative tool that means you can forget about what you’re physically playing and concentrate on what you’re playing.

Killer looking rig. Take 1 or 2 cabs depending on the gig. Awesome stuff.

You've got all this wrong. Bassdirect's website inaccuracies is a ploy to drive people to the site. People beach on here and click on the links or go to the website to see for themselves. If there's anything that people like to do, it's point when somebody is wrong. Drive up the traffic, up goes your google ranking.
Win/win.
(Of course, we all know this isn't really the plan... but it's benefiting them through fluke rather than judgement)
Reading between the lines, I think you’re spot on!- 1

How do they compare?

Thanks. Ah that explains the lower price. Still lots of high end hardware here.
I had a streamer jazzman many moons ago with this pup combination and it was decent. I wonder how much one of those would cost these days. £3k+ I’d imagine. -
I thought the pnut was neck through? Maybe memory failed me. Interesting to scroll through and see the price of a thumb nt4 these days. £6k!!!!

This is such a great pup combination. With a pick it’s immense.

A very worn, annotated and well thumbed book about bass improvisation that I picked up from Reading’s oxfam music store. Every-time I leaf through the shelves I find a load of bass titles.

I’m a bit torn over this as a former guitar store manager. Before they did this, there were retailers who priced everything up to be £25-50 a box profit. That’s all the way to US models. e.g customer pays £1050, store makes £25. They’d rather sell you any other brand to try and make the rent and pay their staff a wage.
Basically they were destroying any realistic margin for any retailer for the brand, which isn’t sustainable. Dealers were going under, were dropping the brand etc as there was literally no point in selling Fender guitars. I honestly prefer keeping pricing level, meaning people shop for the best service and experience and not just on price.

2x12 shifts a lot of air. I’d sell everything and get a new, modern 2x12 that’s lightweight, louder & better than the ampeg and you can use for everything.

Super jazz seems right to me. Emergence of new active electronics and popular use of more exotic woods. Thinking sei, good fellow, moon, east, Bartolini, Sadowsky etc. Memories of bass magazine with glowing reviews of these sort of instruments.

Andertons bought 5 of them! Blimey!

They sound great! Can’t see them shifting at that price though. Look out for them in the next Black Friday sale.

Every time I’ve tried these strings I couldn’t help but think the brand name was missing an h after the s.
Opinions are like certain body parts etc….
