In my younger years , I'd be anxiously looking forward to meet and greets like this . That was then , and Living in London at the time I'd  manage to get to them 99% of the time .  One of my friends ( a big rush fan like myself ) highlighted the Portsmouth date but knowing south western railway on a  Sunday ( with over 2 hrs each way ) I just said that I couldn't be bothered . Not very rock'n'roll I agree.😬

In my reply to his email, I did point out that if he was working in London on the Barbican date that he should go .

Having said that , we were both lucky to see Geddy at the Haymarket premiering the film .

If I did go,  I would think that times are hard but it's worth paying for . Plus it's a collectors item if you're into that.

As I say , I did do a few meet and greets . Always seemed to be on Monday lunchtimes . This involved asking / begging my boss and work colleagues to allow me and give me more flexibility in case I was late back . Waiting 4 hrs for metallica in shades in showery conditions was not fun  !
Meeting  the various rock / pop stars was always a Rush ( sorry ) .

The 2 nicest people I met and queued up for were Bob Calvert and Jean michel Jarre . Was  among the last dozen allowed .

Metallica ; Cliff was the best . Lars was confused  by the test pressing I had of their first 12" single .
Meeting Mercyful fate was very odd ; I rushed into shades to get the 12" and Mike pointed the band to me over on the table .

It was just me , and they all spoke in Danish . I got a handful  of signed stickers and left .
Most miserable ; Alice Cooper !  The band were great , but he looked angry and didn't talk to anybody . I didn't realise until years later that he nearly died from hanging at the gig I saw at Wembley !  I guess that's why he was a tad grumpy .

I'm sure Geddy won't be like that :)

I have Geddy's  book of Bass , but if his autobiography is on Audible I'd prefer that .

I really enjoyed reading that. Thanks for posting and reminiscing.

I’ve been trying to work out what I like the most about this. Blocks and binding? Scratchplate? Gold hardware? I don’t think I really love any particular design choice but all together it just looks killer. Im so jealous I don’t have £260 knocking around to grab one!

  3. The working guys I know are some of the friendliest, easiest to work with people with inexhaustible amounts of drive and stamina. I’d say this is waay more important than gear, although there is a minimum level needed for sure.
Networking is also the ticket to success and it’s a real skill that leads to the phone ringing.

  4. Decided I needed something new to inspire me to practice more. Ever get stuck in a rut and need something shiny to encourage you to get back to the bass shed? Well that was me and scratch definitely itched!

My orange b25 was ace at outputting  meagre fart impressions at low volume so decided to up it a bit.

I’ve been keeping an eye out for a new amp on BC and FB for a while and this rumble combo turned up for sale a couple of miles down the road. I’m not gigging at the mo but wanted to get something that would work if the opportunity arose. I’ve had big rigs in the past and miss the weight (tone-wise) a decent size cab can deliver, even at low volumes.

Fantastic enjoyable, easy purchase and nice chat from the seller led to me purchasing this 1x15 200 watt combo. Pretty much mint condition and barely used.

It sounds great, is super light and works brilliantly at low volume. Initial preference is to run the gain really high, vintage switch in and eq mostly flat. No real tinkering to get a good sound.

I get a lot more noticeable variation in tone now when changing pickups/ right hand position.

It’s made practice fun again. I’m flicking through tuition books that I’ve ignored for years. For the first time ever my neighbour told me he could hear what I was playing and gave me a compliment. I think it was a polite way of telling me to turn down! Reminder to self to be reasonable with the volume.

So far so good! If I actually get the chance to play out the house I’ll update this thread with thoughts.

Best to ask each as I suspect they will do it on a case by case basis.

When I purchased my Yamaha BB434, Thomman were about £100 cheaper than uk sellers. PMT online and Anderson’s declined to price match but GuitarGuitar were happy to and we got it sorted by email in a couple of hours from me asking to them sending me a custom link.

Peach guitar have just put their price up but they do show the weight of each bass and may price match If they decide they need to shift them.

£259 is below trade price for a £399 retail instrument so thomann are either making a loss to clear the shelves or fender sold a container load on a special price to them. Point two would be unfair to the rest of their dealer network so it’s guessing it’s point 1. When they’re gone they’re gone!

  6. Currently at a euro camp in France and this is better than 90% of the music they insist on blaring out the poolside speakers.
They had a weird dance remix of Valerie and dancing in the moonlight to soundtrack the aqua rugby session yesterday. Help.

  7. Such a great setup for someone to learn on. I bet this beats the first bass/amp of 99% of folks on here. It certainly beats mine!
I was only permitted a battery powered marshall mini stack thing to plonk away through when I was 12.

  8. I find it to harder to navigate around quickly on this new site. I actually used to value being able to see thumbnails at a glance on the old site to have a quick scan of new items, I don’t think that’s possible anymore. Some more shortcuts to filters on the landing pages for accessories like strings would help. “Show me all 4 string sets” or something. When I open strings I get 8 pages of results and a massive number of filters, it’s overwhelming tbh. I open it and click away as it feels like too much work to find my way around.

  9. I generally go down a gauge with flat wounds for the same reason. The tension is a killer. I tried some roto 45-105 and had to take them off as I couldn’t play them. Sticking to ti flats for the time being.

  10. I watched most of this. Enjoyed the archive compilation a lot. Alex James is a genuinely really inventive player. His lines are busy but don’t sound like he’s overplaying or getting in the way. The recent concert was high energy but everything sounded too fast. Put it down to the energy on the night I suppose.
