  1. Tbf to Markbass the whole party tricks / ‘playing the spoons’ style bassist tracks well online, and will win them more shares and likes than someone playing something more sedate.

I wonder if they’ll wheel out Mark King as the end of level baddie?

  2. Where the characteristic - gender, race, religeon, sexuality - is a requirement of the job (say a shopping centre Father Christmas, or a women's changing room attendant) the ad can legally ask for it.  You could easily see how the agency's request would fall under this.

The inclusive job ad doesn't stop an employer just hiring who they want for the job anyway..

  3. Bottom line is this isn't about what any of us think is right, either musically or ethically. The agent says mixed bands are a harder sell for them, so that's it. Personally I'd disagree, but they know how they can make money.

'Entertainment' job ads are not ruled as tightly as ads for regular jobs - where you can't discriminate on age, race, gender, etc - the loophole being the person has to be right for a playing a particular part. It's pretty wooly but somehow how it exists without too much trouble.

  4. Wanting to play something more than once is a start. Next sign of a like is dropping it into a playlist.
Today’s finds worthy of repeat - new Mr Bungle, and a ‘73 Gary Bartz album.

It’s crazy over the years gone by how much music I swerved for spurious reasons, only to revisit years later and enjoy it.

I think if you genuinely like music - you can’t ever write off a whole genre, you just haven’t yet been exposed to the right stuff for you.

Am I the only one? I really like the BBOT bridge, engineering simplicity and elegance.  Yes it can be improved,  Peavey (and others) have some grooves for the grub screws to prevent lateral movement.  Another (simple) useful improvement would be the ability to top load the strings rather than feed them through the hole.

Agree. It’s endured well, form and function. Surprising how few BBOT variants there are our there. Top loading is a good shout

    God, some of these names.......

I genuinely don't see the point in a post like this. People can come up with any name, I've read Pastorius, Paul McCartney and Geddy Lee.... I mean, I understand it's just opinions, it's a discussion, everything is subjective... But really?

I've found one of the life rules for long term tenure on Basschat is happily walk away from subjective threads.

If someone thinks Mozart / Hendrix / Miles Davis was crap, and 10 others pile in with a Like, whatever.

Sleep easy knowing the majority read what you did and thought the same as you. :)

Although... my mum was a Beatles fan, and was somewhat nonplussed when I told her that Mr. McCartney was a bass player, rather than a guitarist.

He may well be the most loved bass player by folks who never knew there was such a thing as bass... ever.

Haha. So.. your mum thinks Macca is seriously overrated as a bass player 🤔

He’s strangely not far off the recurring ‘famous people who also play bass’ category on here

my ever so slightly interesting story regarding Hot Chocolates original bass player......

Many years ago my driving instructor told me that he was previously a session musician - guitar. One of his circle of friends/colleagues was the original bassist of Hot Chocolate (who basically formed the group and co-songwriter) - Tony Wilson.

My driving instructor was invited by Tony to join the group at the start ("I've written some great songs with a great singer") but declined because he had too many projects fail before.

Just think - If history had worked differently I may not be able to drive today!

Or maybe you’d have been taught to drive by the guy who used to play bass in Hot Chocolate

I am finding it a bit hard to get my head round the idea that you can get a decent instrument in the sub-£200 range ( let alone sub-£100!). I came up in a time when cheap basses were truly awful.

That's globalisation and CNC for you... Can't go wrong with a Harley Benton.
