... I have recognise the fact that a lot of them were bought simply to own rather than to use. However owning lots of instruments has allowed my to work out exactly what I like about the ones I'm keeping and why the ones I sold didn't quite "do it" for me.

    That's it. Very well put

  2. Can you remorse over 'factory made' kit you can just rebuy? Maybe. Cort Jeff Berlin 4 was very lovely bass to play, do miss that. Squared off with the knowledge I could just re-buy another one day.

Vintage gear though.. occassinal pangs for the '72 Jazz. Focus on the £3.5K and less sad, but wish it was still on the rack..

    Hi Jon

Terry Chapman of TJC Guitars did a refin on a bass for me in this colour. He no longer does refins but should be able to advise where to source the paint.

Didn’t know he’d stopped, that’s a shame. Used him on your recommendation last year, did a brilliant job. Had another to put his way ..

  4. LaBella were great.

Std scale E too long for new 33 inch scale bass, and looked like Medium scale would be too short..

Contacted New York HQ, they queried bridge / peg measurements, said they'd see what they could do.

A week later, 2 x custom length E strings arrived in the post, no charge. Great family owned and run business that went above and beyond.

  5. Great question and thread.

Totally agree that sustain per se is not a marker of quality. We expect some sustain in any instrument, but it’s just one of many parts of the voice.

Bridge manufacturers have done a persistent job telling us we need more, but stacks of records out there with beautiful, long sustained notes and harmonics via BBOT.

I don't mean unknown (although obviously they are), I mean of the people that know them I suspect that more people dislike them than like them.

    For sure, totally agree.

I guess my point was that starting a thread on here bemoaning them has more than a whiff of mischief, and predictable results :)

See also Jaco, jazz (daily), range rovers, cyclists, music stands etc etc

I wouldn't have thought so. In fact I would think that is the default position. When it comes down to it I would imagine the majority of people don't like Yes.  Certainly when I was at school and just after when I really liked them, most people I knew didn't.

Totally agree they’re unknown in the wider world but Chris Squire is venerated on here by many.

It, and the film it's taken from, say everything about music as I understand music. I think that photo alone explains my deep heartfelt engagement with 60's Precisions :)

Great film. Tull with Iommi , Taj Mahal. So much to enjoy, still sounds great today

Edit: Hastily assumed film as Rock n Roll Circus, (Keith bass with Lennon & Clapton) might be wrong :)

  9. If you like the rest of if you can just recalibrate.

Played with a great drummer who was infuriatingly slack on rehearsal start times. I just accepted 7pm start meant we started playing 7.35 , and worked my times around this.

If relaxed start to rehearsals is the only issue, you’ve found an originals band you genuinely enjoy playing with - a rare thing. I’d stick with it.
