1. Greetings from another Kingston based bass player , I'm actually to going to see them at the half moon in Putney in march with my band , to see a real funk outfit to try and inject some SOUL into our live act ;-)

/ an excuse to see a great band and imbibe a few beverages.

2. when learning a new song my attitude is use the resources you have , to learn a song in the best way you can , a mixture of crap you-tube tutorials ,
songster scrolling tab , sheet music and by ear .. to come up with that feel best represents what i hear when i listen to the song.

At the end of the day, if your playing to enjoy yourself and make a half tidy sounding racket down the bull and bush on a Wednesday night then whatever you come up with that goes with your arrangement is fine .

Professional muso or dabbling idiot in his bedroom , the answer to this question all comes down to what you want to get out of playing bass
If you find yourself playing a corporate covers band then i can see that paying for original liner notes , getting the sound down perfectly listening for hours on end to an original 45 to get the tone perfect is perfectly acceptable and encouraged but one shouldn't be-little the other's validity to the person doing it.

.

3. i swapped out some crap Chinese pickups on a J bass not so long ago , if your looking for good and cheap i considered these http://www.entwistle...up.php?puid=JBX which some people rave about .

In the end i found someone who had done a swap out of some Squire VM J Seymour duncans on the evilbay , they also threw the loam in but i imagine the wilkinson loom is a lot better than i had to work with.

4. I think there's always the chance that serendipity smiled on that factory that day, the right parts ended up on the right bit of wood. In my case I'm very fond of my bitsa jazz copy , the body/ hardware and neck is from a most probably Chinese knock off .

It feels great and it resonates really nicely, a thunky deep tone , holds its tune for weeks on end ... the electronics were a joke but that's easily fixed
with a iron and a 2nd hand set of Squire vintage modified from evil-bay.

Obviously i would never suggest that its better than a boutique zebra wood topped master crafted instrument , but i'm happy for any bass player to pop round and have a noodle to help them get over their GAS.

5. Im a big fan of the "Mudbucker" neck pickup and being 6'5 and not the lanky kind, certain instruments look daft when i hold them Sixer' guitars actually feel like and look like toy's in my mit's .

For years I tried to find a telebass or 'vintage P bass' ,that suited but the Squire felt a bit underwhelming and the vintage things i tried were way out of my price range .. status make these , they even do a pino model with a bridge jazz pickup but im very happy with mine

6. Our drummer only has a electric kit he has access to an acoustic kit when needed at the rehearsal room, but for everything we've done an electric has been great no awful painful ears at rehearsals . I'm sure there are some snob's who sniff at them but I think its working amazingly well

Adjustable volumes , modes to give brush sounds , loads of different drum tones , Im sure some of the early electric basses were frowned apon by upright players ... but in the end its somtimes just a little more convenient than to mic up an upright.

7. My guitarist has a nickname for me ... the cover police , He's more than happy for me to find the roots carry the groove and
show off when i want to ...

But he has to regularly tell me ... that i cant ask to drop a song because i cant nail the part to my satisfaction .
At the end of the day we obsess over our stuff to the level that most people who aren't analyzing it wouldn't even know, and we are re-interpreting songs with different vocalists ,key's or time signatures ... getting the Feel is sometimes better than getting it perfect.

8. I've got these , work great and now i dont get moaned at about the messy stands

9. I've been rebuilding one of these, great little workhorse sadly I did terrible things to mine in my youth such as spraying it dark purple with car paint .. I had no idea how decent a bass i'd picked up in the 90's it was better than i deserved . The neck feels great and the pickups are expressive and versatile and it stayed in tune , while all of my mates crap copies were re-tuning every second song. I'm salvaging it and treating it to a nice respray with real guitar finishing paint this time around.

FYI they had one on Denmark street for in wunjo's up for around 300 in a rather nice white finish, so this is probably a pretty fair price.

10. I mean to reproduce the intro sound, which is vocals I assumed that was what the OP was talking about when they said " Is it one of those voice tubes"

but i'm also also using it for for the overdub parts in the middle to try and fill out the climbing slide i think its a not bad reproduction of the overall sound of the song In a 4 piece setup , with no army of backing vocals to tackle it. Its not perfect by any means but it sounds tidy in the mix, and for <a night out at the pub in terms of pedal not too bad

11. Were also doing this in our set , I'm getting a pretty decent sound for this using an inexpensive Digitech Synth wah on envelope down setting with the sensitivity right up and playing finger style real hard when i want the envelope to really open towards the end of bits , sounds good on the climbing run and slide back too.

Eats 9 volts like a demon though. :-( ... not one if you dont/ cant use a 9 volt adapter , 3 x 9 volts eaten in the course of two weeks its got to the point where I'm unplugging it pre and post song.

I've got an inkling from the live performances its Jamareo Artis , getting funky on this one , i like his work a lot.

12. The Vultures are circling on the plank :-P, you could always look at upgrading the pickups on your old plank i was amazed what a set of pickups installed by me from Broken for parts J did for my bitsa Jazz.

I'm also 100% behind the really great setup , Charlie chandlers who does mine ( i'm lucky to live near his Kingston / Ham store)
does wonder for my Tbird and my Status , they come out feeling amazing its the best 50 quid you can spend new fancy nanoweb nonsense be damned .

You'd find a lot < 300 quid in the for sale section here I know you've currently got a P bass so maybe spending a little on a new P pickup to fix the technical issues , especially if you like the neck.

What about a J like this http://basschat.co.uk/topic/247169-fender-mim-standard-jazz-bass-2001-wine-red/
( not mine but i do have a thing for red so it was on my radar :-P)

My year

Bigger does not mean better, amp tech has come along leaps and bounds since the late 90's and i probably should have bought smaller and more modern rather than big old and what i knew.

My Korean Epi T bird's a keeper , I've got a real gem compared to what they make now.
Sound comes as much from familiarity with your instrument, I know how to make that particular bass sing' where all the sweet spots and tones are for each style i play and a new bass does not always improve that until im as good with it .

Digitech pedals eat batteries, I need to work out 9 volt power supply stuff because having my pedal fail during Uptown funk is in no way funky.

14. I cant tell you the secret's direct on here everyone would know and the price of vingtage kit would sky rocket .... but if you send a stamped addressed envelope with a cheque for 100 quid , ill forward how :-P

I use the dun-lop style plastic strap locks myself and while it went on fine with the strap and lock. It spoiled the look with the strap on , as i tend to play sat down at home anyway.

The status P bass pictured i have has some of the biggest strap buttons I've come across, like these only abit larger than the size of an old school 5 pence , popping them on a conventional strap was a bit of a game but no issue for the hangers.

15. @ Discrete ... whoops .... ;-) yes i meant right .. its too early and being back at work today is killing me.

@ BassBus .. Thats certainly not too many basses ;-)

The minimum number of basses one should own is three. The correct number is n+1, where n is the number of bass's currently owned. This equation may also be re-written as s-1, where s is the number of basses owned that would result in separation from your partner.

Those are my 3 MUST have , the rest are not pictured and don't deserve fancy hangers :-P

16. Since my last acquisition grumbles of how untidy our home office / spare room has become
too many guitars on the floor and how untidy the stands are .

Enter a nice little bass related Christmas present from my folks , and much needed clear up of our spare room , http://www.woodieshanger.com/shop/woodies-hanger-for-fender-style-guitars/

At first i was concerned about them holding the extra weight of bass'es this was quickly dispelled
Getting them down is easy you just reach over the sofa and push them up .

So easy even our drummer could install em ..

The keen eyed among will have noticed an all important space to the left of the status always room for one more .

17. Matski , works a lot better if you start it that way when people search for your name in the feedback forum its just there plus its a good tag on for a signature , let me know if you do .

Used this bass for Christmas gig on Friday sounded massive , loads of muddy dark , i'm surprised that i actually prefer the passive sound to the active but this may just be to the way i EQ my amp.

I even had venue staff asking what it was , a real players Telebass , now i wonder what it would sound like with flats :-D

18. Welcome !! ....From another recent newcomer and now fully addicted basschatter

Just try to stay out of the for sale section there's far far too many pretty things lurking in there waiting to bite .

19. All these heartless folks saying scrap it .... how could you , that is the instrument that sparked your passion :-P

My reccomendation would be to hold onto and refinish it properly ... I was in wunjo's on denmark street shopping for new toys .. when i spied An Aria , CAT kind of like aria's take on squire/Epi. For the best part of 400 quid i was disgusted but my first bass was one of these in red - and it has lived in a cupboard sans case for years.

This beast is a ply bodied heavy and passive but had a pretty decent neck even after all this time it feels comfy in my hands.
refinished horribly away from the stock sparkle red by myself with some car body spray to a horrific purple. (i was 17 and it seemed dead cool .)

Right now its in the process of getting a new lease of life courtesy of some nitro-mors and elbow grease.
From this ( sorry about the pics i didnt think i'd actually be sharing them ... just documenting stripping it for my sake
