1. I'm a relative youngster in my covers band , the others are late 40's our front man, turned drummer ( due to losing our drummer) Can play all of instruments to a far higher standard than the rest of the band . He's frequently telling me that I don't have to do it perfectly like the original we are looking for the feel of the song , key phrases and the such but there are occasions where i FLAT out don't know a song we are going to learn .

Fortunately modern technology is amazing i;ve got me a subscription to Songster http://www.songsterr.com/a/wa?ref=499253
Which basically does the tascam trainer thing , where you can slow down , loop and basically learn the part ... If songster doesnt have it ...
youtube and spotifiy usually will .

Remember you're auditioning for a covers band ... if you have advertised yourself as the second coming of flea they will expect you to slap ...
Otherwise lay down a solid groove make sure you know the root's for the chords at the very least , lock in with there drummer ... and you'll be fine.
never sacrifice the time-feel to hit a note.

2. I' didn't call it 50hz hum because were more familiar with the term , 60hz hum , but yes cheap ass pick-ups with a cheap ass unshielded loom sat a little too close to my amp in the living room
( volume quite low to not irritate she who would be obeyed)

Bzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ... required me to change my volume / tone settings to make it go away ... since getting a loom upgrade the Hum ... she is gone :-P and i can set the pickups to my old settings and sit mere inch's from my speaker .

3. Sorry Chienmortbb... I dont agree with that in the slightest , with a quality loom , pots and control's which are far more usable my stock rubbish ... the tone control went from an on off button that seemed to turn on at about 50% and get even more nuts at 100% ... to a gradual control that add's brightness as i roll it.

The 60 Hz hum that i'd get from my single coils is totally gone due to them being properly shielded .. and he offers whatever cap's you want ... so if you want a grease-bucket he can do it ... if you want vintage he can do that ... Yes of course upgrade the Pu's but the loom makes a huge difference too ...

4. i'm going to second what Conan said ... about Kiogon's custom loom's His noiseless soldier less loom has changed my cheap jazz basses life ...
major props to that man .

Incidentally Bexhill on sea .. We used to vacation just up the coast from you in Normans bay .

5. I run flats on my Jazz , and my Stringray type 5 , the only thing that doesn't get this treatment is my T-Bird ;-)

With a brighter flat like a chrome .. i get a huge variety out of the jazz .... I think the easiest way to tell is how do yo want your bass to sound If like me you find that tone knobs are much more likely to be set
to 1 -3 rather than 8-10 , Then you'd benefit from using flats ;-)

Putitng flats on the Tbird just seems like a bad idea :-P though

6. As Long term lurker in this thread and frequent peruser of public peace ... i'm strongly considering pulling the trigger on one of his stock Elwood C's in the rather fetching white rabbit guise

Does anyone within 30 mins or so of london have one of these ... i could try ? Im concious of the fact that he uses a 40mm rather than 38mm neck and after being burnt on a bass i didnt play before buying i'd really rather lay my claws on one.

7. To be honest i can get that angry sound out of a few of my bass's my Epid Tbird with different amounts of tone depending on the song and the bass slightly dropped on my Eq and the mids raised a bit more than i use for smoother stuff, getting the grow from it is as much about right hand position .. i play between my pickups but slightly closer to the bridge the more bright it want it to be and run through the Tube screamer patch from my zoom B3 ...

Instant Angry and very usable sound used for Ace of spades ,(even more mids and more gain) / Chelsea dagger ( with the tone pot on 10 and mid's dialed back a little bit)

For rock you cant beat a cheap n cheerful T-bird.... Second hand they go for around £150 in top nick and less for that the more beat they are , ( especially the older korean made ones like this which tbh are a lot better than the later stuff (MIC)

They make you feel like a loony with that giant plank strapped to you ... and part of what channels that aggression ... is the angry 13 year old inside escaping into the
practice room ... theres an easy fix for the neck dive on these as well due to the bolt on construction.

8. Here try this from its from my Te 7215 smc GP7 This is the photo i use when some Muppet has been messing with it to annoy me in the storage room.
https://goo.gl/photos/SeFMNTCbtN46Brz76

Input volume at around 2-3 oclock ish just under where my clipping light is and use the master to deal with volume ...

https://goo.gl/photos/SeFMNTCbtN46Brz76

Completely contradicts what the others in the forum are saying about cutting 50hz but ... gives me what i want out of the amp.

9. I did my similar no name bass upgrades with no issues the pickup swap from the stock's no names to some duncan designed , hand me downs from a Squire Vintage modified that someone had gone for Quarter pounders ... it plays wonderfully as the neck was already a dream and the pickup and loom / pots upgrade from kiogon meant its a great bitsa now for those gigs where the status should not go.

I could not find a pick-gaurd to suit the screw holes are all in the wrong places and as i was looking for a cheap solution didnt want to get a custom one made , so instead i followed somone's suggestion to cover it in sticky back vinyl ... worked a treat ...

Here's a couple of quick snaps .... the vinyl peel's off really easy and i have loads spare ... 4 Meter roll was 4 pounds.

A close to see my slightly less dodgey work with a craft knife and the white gaurd underneath giving a BWB 3 ply kind of effect

10. Actually i'm looking at the regulations on these wouldn't bass chat come under a small society ... im bored its lunchtime :-P

3. Meaning of society and local authority lotteries Society lotteries

3.1 Society lotteries are lotteries promoted for the benefit of a non-commercial society. Such societies are organisations that have distinct aims and objectives and meet the definition of a non- commercial society set out in the Act.

3.2 A society is non-commercial if it is established and conducted for charitable purposes, for the purpose of enabling participation in, or of supporting, sport, athleticsor a cultural activity for any other non-commercial purpose other than that of private gain.

This seems to require registration but no fee's for that registration unless the lotteries .

may in a single society lottery exceed £20,000,

or the proceeds of previous lotteries in the same calendar year have already reached or may, taking into account the lottery in question reach £250,000 in one calendar year.
The other caveat is the cost of registering for basschat because its a " REMOTE organisation" looks to be around £40 and at least 20% of the proceeds must go to the organisation in every lottery So .... lets say a £1000 bass would be 50 tickets @ £20 800 pounds of the proceeds would go to the owner of the bass and 200 to bass chat to make it legal.

I VERY much doubt one of the organisers at basschat wants to go to the hassle of registering for a remote operators licence and manage these kind of sales ... and that too many people would be happy losing a 20% cut of the sale proceeds to basschat every time one of these went up ,people would want it rolled into the costs of ticket sale.

I'd say this is a non starter and anyone doing it on facebook / other unregistered Charity is actually breaking the law unless they are registering with the gambling commission :-P

11. I'm pretty much is the same quandary at the moment , I want a jazz bass I love my Bitsa ... but ultimately its reached its best bass it can be , I got a little money from the collect family for birthday and Christmas So i went down to guitar guitar in Epsom because I knew they would have lots of Mim's to try ....

Did feel really good I loved the satin neck on the one I tried it felt like a wonderful instrument and it was very difficult to leave without it which we did because I'm more of an agonizer and hate the idea of paying top money for a bass in the shop that after consulting the serial number has been there for 2 and a bit years .

Let me put the cat among the pigeons ... and add the other reason why I walked away http://www.public-peace.de/index.php/bass-guitars/maruszczyk/elwood/4-string
People are speaking incredibly highly of them I would really really love someone who has some fender J's to do some in depth comparison but the way people talk about them
they seem close to american standard quality ???

Price wise once you get that converted from euro's its only 40 quid more than what I was looking at paying for a MIM but you get it shipped and a nice bag and strap ...
Im torn.

12. I did just this myself about 6 months back , picked up an OLP mm3 5 string as a part exchange trade on here I'd strongly recommend one of these. i believe there called the olp MM3 cracking basses you can see why they were pulled by Ernie ball , they punch WAY WAY above there weight especially if your more of a passive guy like I am , massive and very usable sound .... and very tight string spaces so if your used to a jazz nut the neck isn't too much of a handful i believe the .string spacing is something like 16mm .

I think there definatly around 150-160 2nd hand and totally worth that.

13. Those are proper pretty I was never a big fan of the original magnum or 2 but the 3 and 4 are right up my alley ... was the the brown or greyburst one ?
how long ago are we talking ? , I saw a Brown finish in wunjo's few months back ... but these arent common basses so i wish her luck.

14. Remember ..its 80 trace watts :-P that equates to twice as many of your non British watts :-P

Our rehearsal studio growing up in leafy hounslow >.< , long gone now had a full suite of various trace gear from these BLX to the GP's , I'd even borrow one for gigs where where we needed more oomph ... Ususally i'd swap the BLX for a GP from another room if we were in one of the smaller ones without it .

Probably the reason why i stayed with trace later on .

15. Hah ha ,lovely bass shame about the headstock i've always heard great things about Shine / SAEIN music corporation
There's also a rumour they manufacturer Harley Benton for thomman and they really do make great quality instruments from the far east .

16. I used the Aria SB 400 mentioned here on the Aria website linked under *Rarities/Others* the owner Alain , mentioned on the site lived 3 doors down from my parents growing up and loaned me the bass as he was mainly a guitarist.

I Learnt to play on the thing did my first gig on the thing ... had no idea what good bass i had until when i was going of to university, I gave it back to him
i'd gotten my Thunderbird as i knew i couldnt take the SB out of london ..The Tbird also seemed cooler to the 18 year old me ... How wrong i was ... should have bought the damn thing off him > .<

Nothing has ever compared sound wise to that thuddy SB strung with a set of massive gauge flats from the 80's the
SB-400 was passive with a coil tap mini switch, volume and tone pots that were actually usable rather than " off off off > all the TONE
