  1. bridge needs sorting, from the photo it l looks like the nut slots for those strings are too deep and wide and the top hasn't been thinned
  2. i may possibly be able to do it depending how much of the material i already know, im about 12 miles from carcroft, if you can let me know the set list as soon as poss will be able to tell you, my email is [email protected], mobile 07760444339, or stick it on here, cheeers Jez you should be able to check me out on julesband.co.uk
  3. the venue was really small, had to leave it in the car, good news is im now rehearsin with 2 bands, one is a country/bluegrass with acoustic gtr, banjo and mandolin and the other is with a guy called Angelo Palladino who currently is playing solo but i answered his ad for a double player and am working on putting lines to his material, thanks for askin
  4. tried a german carbon fibre today that is a cheapish chinese one i believe and found it ok, does anyone know if the bow lenght is something to consider as they seem to vary and would a 4/4 be a problem? or is 3/4 size better?
  5. I was round at Toms house today and compared the sound with metal endpin and the wooden one and the difference made with the wooden endpin was very noticable, fuller and wider sound that seemed to disperse more
  6. aye, know mr jamerson plays with one finger, but you may have failed to notice this is the DOUBLE BASS section mate, no prob though , thanks for replying!
  7. i mainly use my ist finger to pluck, i have been experimenting with using the 2nd finger but i dont like the sound, it has a less solid tone and has a bit of a squeak to it, anyone else have issues or overcame them, are there players who sound great with just one finger? thanks, Jez
  8. thanks guys, just as i thought i would be just as confused as before lol, its like a woman telling a bloke to go to the supermarket and get some washing powder for the washing machine !!!!!
  9. on reflection when i took up double bass about 5 years ago during the 3 years i was playing i would have developed more as a player if i had learnt to bow, with that in mind i think now i have took up double bass again i should get stuck into it, i reckon i ought to get a carbon fibre probably german bow, i am considerin the Yita ones on ebay as they seem to come reccommended by those who have used them, unless someone can persuade me against them or sell me a good one cheap lol, thanks , Jez
  10. collected Westbury after work done by Peter Hall and its fantastic, really great job and its really opened the sound up, tried the full circle through fishman pro eq into effrects return of my mark bass combo and its got a very usable sound, had to keep volume down as it was 11pm lol but with a bit of cut on low mid, mid and high mid its getting there, and it plays so easy now, so much so that i have a gig tonight and even though i havent played double for about 2 years im considerin taking it and having electric on standby lol
  11. Just dropped my westbury of at Peters for just the same work doing lol, plus full circle fitting
  12. bought pre amp from dave , posted promtly, well wrapped and just as described, thanks mate, Jez
  13. Going over to Peter Hall at Beverley sunday, new bridge with full circle pickup, new spiro weichs and fingerboard relief adjustment, plus a carbon fibre tailpiece fitted!
  14. hows your fingerboard relief, it may measure that at the end but it may not give a bigger picture of the action elsewhere, I recenty bought a used westbury and the action is similar to yours at the end of fingerboard but its about 1-2mm higher in the middle and at the nut end it gets high quickly so I will be getting an easier relief applied to the board, its also got spiro mittels on which are higher tension than I prefer so im going to be putting some weichs on, no one can tell if your action is to low as there are many factors involved, go see a luthier and he will be able to advise from your playing technique what relief/string height you need and maybe even an adjustment or not in your right hand technique, im not an expert , im sure someone else with more experience will be able to comment on what I have said, all the best mate, Jez
  15. Thanks Geoff, cant blame the gear then lol
  16. Spiro weichs and fishman full circle on way from thomman, then of back to peter hall at Beverley for new bridge/strings/full circle fitting and probably a alteration of the fingerboard relief.
  17. Thanks Sarah and Geoff , Definetly need less tension strings, am getting more thump than note and when I used weichs I could hear the pitch easier especially on the lower strings and there was a bit more buzz to the sound and brighter.
  18. Now i am on my own and in a position to pursue my interests I have just bought a Westbury gamba double bass from Peter Hall over in Beverley. Its setup for bowing and its probably a little high for me and has spiro reds on , my old bass had spiro purples on it, I told peter that I would play it as it is and see how I go, got it home and I can tell the combination of reds with higher action is tiring quickly but then I have had a layoff of about 2 years! If I can get my hands on some used spiro purples will give em a try.
  19. im sure your right that having pics increases chance of selling, but im in no rush and am sure it will sell, and Tom, thanks for the kind words, cheers, Jez
  20. No pics = no sale nonsense, i could post a pic of a good condition contra 3 and no one would be the wiser, its in great condition and perfect working order, you dont have to believe me, i can live with that, cheers Jez
  21. yes have used it a bit with a trio that i was playing doublebass with, sold the doublebass recently so this is now surplus to requirments, cheers, Jez
