First time builder looking for suggestions.
Joebethell replied to Joebethell's topic in Build Diaries
So with my pickups arriving I have come to a a point where I could just throw it all together as it is or take it to the next level. Watching some of the other builds on basschat has made me want to give it a try so I'm going to strip back the body to bare wood fill the existing pickup and control cavity then fit an exotic wood top -
Looking great

So it has been a long wait but my pickups have finally arrived. So that is a pair of Darkstars! bridge and neck with Fender spacing and custom coil taps. I have to say just looking at the quality of the work that Curtis has done I'm very pleased i waited to have them made. Im looking forward to fitting them unfortunately with work and then the small matter of Glastonbury I'm probably only going to have the time to do some drawing of plans for placement etc. here is a quick snap straight out the packet. -
Can't recommend the sandblasted finish enough it's very tacktile and has a satin feel to it totally different the normal Fender soild colours. Plus it changes depending on the light.

So this a long story that has hopefully come to an end. After a year or so of buying, swapping and struggling with a few basses of all shapes and sizes (to the point of my family, friends and bandmates decided i had a Bass buying problem) i have come to find the Bass for me. Rather than bore you with all the details i will give you an overview of the last few months in which i made a number of decisions which has lead to this point. Firstly high end Bass Guitars are well worth the money and i have had 3 in recent times that were great but if you are like me worried about gigging them they end up in case in the spare bedroom. So this has lead me to sell and swap a Dingwall SPJ a Mike Lull and a 1976 Fender Jazz bass. The next two purchases happened within a short period of time really i spotted in the Basses for sale section of this very site an Everson Fretless which i ended up buying after a small regret of selling a Sei Flamboyant 5string Fretless an number of years ago. This was a great bass again with a real punchy tone but for the kind of music i am mostly playing with my band at this time a pretty useless purchase in the end so that bass to was moved on. The sale of the Everson leads to the final part of the saga a TWO yes TWO bass within TWO weeks. The first of the two basses was a 62 Fender japan VSP Jazz in candy apple red purchased online from Classic and Cool Guitars a stunning Bass (and Mark is a legend) BUT!!! and this is my own fault for breaking my own rule of not playing a bass before you buy I could not get on with the neck the thick lacquer and profile meant I couldn't get on with it. I was quiet at work and with a gig coming up i dropped into a local retailer just for some strings o my lunch and my eyes were drawn to the back wall of Basses (normally only lower end basses) but this time one stood out. I fell for a Fender Pbass Limited Edition Sandblasted. it was taken into a corner plugged into a pretty poor Ashdown combo but the basses tone shone through with a neck that felt right straight away. So decision made the Jazz was collected and part exchanged and the Pbass was mine. Now i have not put the Bass down since it has been gigged and sounded great with loads of positive comments and that finish its tactile and frankly stunning. So i have found the bass for me not to expensive to use has a great tone and Stunning finish.

So just had an email to say my pickups are on the way! 👍 -
Can highly recommend Mark at classic and cool or bass direct
-
Yeah it is a way I'm a lot closer and its a good hour and a half from me but a good excuse to make a day trip! Just a thought unless you know of a shop closer that stocks what your after.
-
My advise would be if you can get to Bass Direct try the rebops they have in stock see if you like it and while your there try the secondhand Warwicks and for me the Dingwall Combustions they have in stock. If you are looking for a new bass I would always play one to save disappointment of not liking what you buy.

Sorry it offends you. I saw it got excited then realised it still had a while to go if anything it points out to others that they are out in the world as they don't come up very often.

Yeah I'm sure they had one like this in the gallery last year.

eBay does occasionally bring up the odd bargain. Still got 9days left though so I'm guessing it will end up near its true value. Item number http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/151695976776?nav=SEARCH

The Worst 3grand you could spend on a fender
Joebethell replied to Joebethell's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
As if Fender had Kahlar make that bridge for them can't think of any good reason why! Even an old badass/star would have been better. -
Yeah I'm thinking a may go with the Guild i have found as its almost the same bass i got rid of just need to scrape together the funds (may have to put another bass in the listings on here again) Last in First out as they say.

Thanks. The basses I have been looking at are around 1500 so you are right on that count I don't have much experience with some of the other brands you mentioned and I thought the new gibsons were also 34" scale. I do have an old Hofner verithin but that's not really a giging bass either. I'm guessing I may just have to hurt my wallet a bit more than I had hoped. 😮

I'm looking at a Coronado 11 or the guild which is a single pickup both 30" scale hoping around a grand but the basses I have looked into are more
-
Hi sorry not a fan of the Jack Casady also not really after a 34" scale length.

I have been struggling with a case of GAS ever since i got rid of a semi bass a couple of years ago! I made the mistake of selling a Guild Starfire bass due to a slight issue when playing live with the bass where the strings would pop off the wooden bridge (even after cutting deeper groves in the saddles). Now my problem is i loved the tone of that bass so much and I have been hunting for another to fill the void even narrowed it down to a couple of options a Fender Coronado 11 (not the reissue the single coil go bass) or another guild but a very expense limited edition with a metal saddles not the wooden of the OG or reissue. Im still open to other choices but i don't really know what to do. HELP PLEASE!!!
