She would most often be in the Hawley Arms, Camden.

Which reminds me of another Camden pub, The Good Mixer.

Had a drink in the Hawley some years ago before going to see the legendary Young Marble Giants at Dingwalls.

And as it happens had a drink in the Good Mixer on Saturday. Sports on the TV but a nice crowd tbf. Toilets are indeed an afterthought 🙄 Good staff though whenever I've popped in when in Camden. And conveniently near the Bass Gallery emporium.

Don't do Jam nights, same old songs, usually the blues, with long solos for the guitard to show off, but if you think you're bad I was doing an open mic once, playing guitar, and a bass player asked if he could join in, I said "sure we'll do 500 miles, same 3 notes in the same order all the way through" thinking how easy it would be, somehow managed to make a right mess of it

So I don't want to put people off doing what they want to do - but isn't a "Jam Night" often more accurately a "Clique Night". And often conflated with an "Open Mic".

Last Open Mic I did with a singer songwriter type I know was going okay until someone running it decided my bass was too loud and turned it down.

Top Stuff 🙄 Now I can't hear myself and the singer's "loose" sense of time means I can't compensate. Magic 😳

  3. If "playing support to..." counts now then I was in a band that supported Dodgy (if you remember 🤣) in Cardiff. I recall annoyance that they would allow our stand in drummer to use the main body of their kit. He had brought his snare and cymbals thus necessitating me (not the drummer but the only car owner/driver) to retrieve his kit from the rehearsal studio or wherever - it was a long time ago 🙂.

Then we couldn't see the audience for dry ice but someone kept shouting iirc "F"*k off" throughout. I think it turned out to be the singer from the guitarist's other band 🙄

And we didn't get paid .....😡

I have powered a pedalboard tuner plus TC Electronics successfully from a 7800mah powerbank using a 5v to 9v converter cable from MyVolts. Lasted a pretty long time (at least 8+ 45 minute practice sessions before needing to recharge).

Was that on a "daisy chain" or some multi cable/ breakout box arrangement ?

You could just get the bare board USB PD decoys and solder the leads to them the right way round. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/335286849794 for a few to experiment with.

Yes. I looked at those type of boards. But given the need to put them in some enclosure etc I opted to go with cable only solution for space and convenience. I have a few bits that take centre positive power anyway do good to have the option.

I've heard of people using USB power cells with a booster to give 9vDC, but haven't used one myself.

I'm planning to have a go using USB PD Powerbanks with cables to request 9V / 15V. Voltage outputs seem fine.

Not yet tried on pedals simply because I need to build polarity adaptors to go from the standard Centre Positive output to Centre Negative for pedals.

  7. EDEN chorus pedal. With original 15V power supply. Never gigged. Photos below. Mixing Desk not included 🙂

In fact it is better than when new 😳 I noticed noise when adjusting pots. Not "pot noise". Worked out that it was due to my fingers touching the metal top plate. The paint on the enclosure meant it wasn't connected to 0V via the enclosure. Sorted that then noticed that paint was causing a poor connection between the two parts of the enclosure so sorted that. Then all good.

  8. Going back to the initial post. I'd make the point that you can't reasonably expect the original discount (due to the finish) to be reflected in a new neck price.

But seems you have resolved that anyway by reprofiling etc the current neck. And tbh if you've already had a couple of hours "consultation" it sounds like you're getting a decent deal.

Sounds like a useful luthier. Might want to give them a shout on here ?

I’ve played gigs and festivals with Wilco Johnson (nice guys!), Jethro Tull, Carl Palmer, Arthur Brown, Wishbone Ash, the Stranglers, Asia and quite a few more I can’t remember. Went on tour with The Musical Box and recorded two albums with Genesis producer Johnny Burns.

This stuff means nothing to most people but was fun.

Sold a guitar to Phil Oakey and I’m sort of friends with Sade’s producer.

Who you referencing as Sade producer ? Mike Long ?

This a lot to do with physics surely.  Depending upon the speaking length of the string you need to consider gauge and construction.  I'm sure tone woods and hardware play a part, but there are plenty of formulae knocking about the with give you guidance on tension for a given gauge of string on a given scale length.   String construction will then affect stiffness etc.

Then you have the pickups and the rest of the signal chain to consider.  I like a high pass filter to get rid of a lot of the really low rumbly stuff and than really helps to clear up what goes to the amp/cab.

It's all physics. Everything is 🙂

I was playing a pub local to me and Cerys Mathews, singer with Welsh Indie rockers Catatonia, happened to be in celebrating. They were doing quite well at the time and had a couple of charted songs, and a manager/friend/record company chap came up and asked our guitarist if she could sing with us.

There were stories that her group had been partaking in a little Peruvian marching powder in the toilets, so the guitarist told him to do one, much to his shock.

I was a bit gutted, could have been a fun story to share on an Internet forum one day if he had said yes.

Apologies for double post. WiFi slow thing while out front with cat 🙄

fwiw just home post Nouvelle Vague gig.

Not sure where the threshold here is...

Not sure where the threshold here is but...played a gig with Catatonia in Cardiff and Cerys did BVs on the demo of a band I was on. Being a friend of our singer and working upstairs from the studio attached to Grassroots youth project. Cardiff 90s "scene" centred on Clwb Ifor Bach. Although gig was in the Stage Door venue near St Davids shopping centre.
