I bet you can tell the difference between tomato sauce and brown sauce, like major and minor sauces (). The modes are a bit like the learning difference between HP tomato sauce, Heinz tomato sauce, Tracklements tomato sauce, HP brown sauce, Tracklements brown sauce, etc. You just have to keep tasting blind until your palatte gets educated to the differences. A few you'll not like, I love lydian but dislike mixolydian for instance. I have a tricky guitar gig coming up playing Indian raag based music. I've been asked to become very fluid with Phrygian mode in D, ascending without the third, descending with the third for the main theme, then call and response with the sitar in 13 /4 and 10/4 with lots of lines going over the bar and odd bar splits. I am doing exactly what I said in the post above and it's getting locked in my head quite nicely. I know I'll make mistakes mind
you need help Silddx but i totally get what your saying, wunnerful
I think the most important thing is to be able to hear the flavour of the mode. So you can recognise it when you hear it, and recognise notes that don't belong in the mode when something like So What is playing. If you can sing the scale and visualise the intervals on the neck then I reckon you're halfway there. The modes have different flavours, think of the first thing or emotion that comes to mind when you hear Dorian. How does the mode make you feel? Is it happy, sad, exotic, reminds you of eating a falafel in Egypt in the morning with that dog barking, or dumping that mad bird in Clacton when you were 17. The key interval differences from the major scale will have most emotional effect. How do those notes make you feel? If you are able sing the scale in your head, see if you can progress to hearing and singing interval skips, ascending and descending in thirds, fourths, etc. The more you do this the more you will progress from recognising the emotional differences between major and natural minor and get into the nitty gritty of the modes. Practice the mode on your bass, just up and down repetitively over one octave, then two octaves then interval skips. Whenever you're hanging about with naff all to do, sing it in your head and visualise your fingers on the bass. It will soon come that you can hear a piece of bass and probably be able to recognise the scale it's based on.
exactly, i dont hear the notes like i do Blues lines and i've been playing for 45 years, and how the heck did you know about Crazy Clacton Kate?

it's Paul Chambers playing over the soloing that i'm interested in, another one is Jaco's playing on 'Night Passage'
Battle of the Bands competitions are a travesty. If you're a young band, then go and see the landlord of your local boozer and say you'd like a gig. He won't make any money on the door, so say you'd like to put on a free gig and if you pull 50 people, you'd like £100 and if you pull 100 people, £200. any more than 100 you'd like £2 pr head and a £50 bonus. If every person buys 3 drinks, he stands to make over a grand in bar takings. My experience of young bands is that their first couple of gigs are jam packed. After that, parents, siblings, friends and other halves lose interest and it becomes difficult to keep the audience numbers up.
nail on the head Bassbloke

John Paul Jones playing bass for Seasick Steve
slobluesine replied to kevin_lindsay's topic in General Discussion
I never got the Seasick Steve adulation... Isn't he Country Blues for people who buy CDs from ASDA? *ducks behind rock*
i doubt if anyone will give SS a gig in the US, and JPJ finally gets to do a gig with the Muppets why does he do do it, wasn't JPJ on the show a while back? -
As a concept, they fundamentally suck. Music is not a competition.
why dont they just give the bands a 'gig' and pay them expenses? call it 'local band night' i dont get the 'Battle' concept? why does it have to be judged, why does there have to a prize, total, total bollox
-
why does it HAVE to be a competiton?
-
i've never played in a BOTB and never will, cos.... they're a scam
-
it's the pubs and scammy clubs that are onto it now that i detest it's 'Quiz night' mentality, NOTHING to do with helping young bands or promoting live music total crap, it just totally pisses me off...... NEVER PLAY FOR FREE
-
BOTB is not alone.... http://dontgetjacked.blogspot.com/2008/11/...e-of-bands.html
We did 2 heats got paid £50 a time and free drinks all night, we are an originals band and usually happy with free drinks, most of them just want you to bring loads of people they are awful but there are a few that are about talent, very few and far between though.
free drinks are no good if you have to drive and £50 a gig ( i take it that was between the band and not each?) doesn't even cover petrol, so you played for free, just like all the other bands
-
Not many gigs send you to a £600 a day studio after.
so how many heats and bands did they get for £600? bear in mind the club i'm talking about normally pay £400 for bands on busy nights they're a scam
-
Only ever played one fair one, £50 per band free drinks and a good prize, we won it in the end but there was none of the usual BOTB bitterness from anyone.
that's agig, not BOTB
-
yeah, the band with the most members wins just had a telephone blast from a club thats on its 3rd heat of who knows how many, has FIVE bands on tonight with yep you've guessed it 'cheap drinks promos' and the prize for the best band at the end of it all is.... wait for it... £400 i happened to mention it was a scam on their Facebook site f*** OFF!!!!
