1. I find it reassuring that a 17 year old is quoting Specimen in an advert. That alone deserves a thumbs up. What a band. New CD out too! P
2. Have you not got those pots yet? I posted them from work on Friday. P
3. Just picked up Lee's M-Audio 18/14 Firewire. Lovely job. P
4. ...and just to ram this down your throats, let's have a spot the difference competition:
5.
Just about everything is different. So much so that it's easier for me to ask you to open the following web pages and compare for yourself. http://www.epiphone....derbird-IV.aspx http://www.epiphone....sic-IV-PRO.aspx
Can I just make one thing very clear here. The image on the second link ISN'T the Classic IV Pro bass. That my friends is a Gibson Thunderbird that was Photoshopped with an Epiphone truss rod cover. P
6. I just put a set of Elixir Nanowebs on my NR. They feel nice. Two rehearsals next week, gig on the 7th. We'll see how they hold up. P
7. I was so in love with Streamers, this makes me feel warm and fuzzy. Imagine how brilliant this would look with black hardware. Have a bump. P
8. In my experience, a POD 2.0 into a bass set up doesn't work so well. In isolation (ie at home) the sound was good enough, but in a live context there wasn't any throw...it sounded very tame. Maybe due to the cabinetry. My little Spider IV sounded way better/louder than a POD through a very large Ashdown/Hartke stack. P
9. I seem to recall there being trim controls under the plate on the Jazz model, maybe I'm incorrect. You can adjust these with a small flat head screwdriver. P
10. Can I have first dibs on this please. Just need to check something with my drummer. I should have a response by this evening. P
11. We've used some very old [edited] recordings of both Teddy Bear's Picnic and the Housewives Choice theme. P
12. I have three or four Gibson three point bridges, one of which I'd be happy to contribute to this worthy cause. They're all black though...so you'd need to sandblast/chrome. P
13. I've tried EB Cobalts; they did last a bit better.. In all my years, I've never tried Elixirs. Next month! P
14. I'm getting a little tired of spending a fortune on strings each month...especially considering my D&Gs rarely get played and come off my basses relatively fresh, so I've been giving some thought to just buying E&A singles. Anyone doing this? eBay cheapest? I tend to favour either Slinkys or D'Addario XLs. P
15. I've never seen wear like that up on the neck.
16. I just did a bit of jizz.
17. I've got an Aria Primary Bass. I got it as part of a stupid cheap Gumtree deal ('Three guitars and a practice amp for £50'). On the downside, the pots were broken (those knobs were resting on there for the photo), and while it sounded OK, the pickup was quite low output. A previous owner had fitted a set of Schaller machines. I swapped out the pickup for a Wilkinson unit that I had about the house, put in new pots and chrome knobs, Dunlop Straploks. It's a very, very nice bass. P
18. Nice! Possibly the only Fender I'd go for now, but I fear for my ballsack if another bass arrived so have a bumpski instead. P
19. I have a mate who'll have this. Can you shoot me PayPal details and I'll forward these on to him. Cheers P
20. OK, what do you want to know? It's back from the tech...bad pots, bad wiring. Pots were 300K (which I'm assured elsewhere are what Gibson are currently using), so these have been upped to 500K units, and the wiring all new. Now it sounds fanblummingtastic; hotter than my others, so I'll do some adjusting in a live setting. All good! P
21. My guitarist has a new banjo arriving imminently and he's asked I advertise these here. He just wants to move these on and not be left with either. Collection from Windlesham, Surrey J2/M3 five minutes) or you'd need to cover shipping (which I wouldn't imagine would be more than £20). The bass is a Jazz copy and comes with a Rocker gigbag, strap and lead. Black, maple neck, rosewood board. Plays nicely really. It's pretty clean, slight buckle rash on the reverse, but finish is solid. The combo is likewise, clean and punchy. I had a noodle on the pair yesterday and despite what I'm using, they actually sounded pretty decent together. I've not been able to find a toot about the bass online...it simply has a 'Bass Cellar London England' decal on the headstock, so would assume these were produced for that emporium. If you're interested, shoot me a PM and I'll put you in contact with my guitarist. Cheers P
22. Well, a minor update here. I'd been using the NR almost exclusively since it arrived and had set up my gear accordingly. You'll see that I used the term 'muddier' in my original post. Following my surgery, my band got back together for a low key jam earlier in the week and clearly something is awry. I swapped basses mid-rehearsal, going back to my '04 TB. It was a shock realisation - all I'm getting from the NR is a horrible mid-low tone, no mids/highs. I spoke to the guy who does my soldering...he asked for a comparison. If the '04 had a tonal output of 1-100, where would the NR sit in this? I guessed at 20-40. I desoldered the tone control and that made little difference, so it's going over to the tech on Tuesday for a rewire. Hopefully this'll sort things out. I'm obviously somewhat disappointed! P
