And the Bass Gallery is posting my SUB back to me as I want to give it another ago. The 2EQ-G String thing has been bantering around so much. It seems to vary from bass to bass, string to string and hands to hands

Buying the SUB from you has stimulated by GAS again and I've picked up a '75 Reissue CIJ Jazz for a second bass! I took it to the gallery when I left London but am debating having them ship it back here so I can either keep or sell privately!

I have one for sale in the Gallery in Camden which may or may not be coming back to me if you are interested in it? I'd be looking for around ~£300 for it.

Thanks Mr C, it was rather an impulse buy when I passed on my SUB but after I saw the Jazz I decided that it was defiantly time to move it on up!

Just an update on this one. The audition is next Saturday and it's a bit more interesting. Because the sheet music hasn't arrived yet, the music director is decide to split it into two pieces. The first is a piece to show your skills on the bass. Now if it were 80s, I could a chorus-overload-slap solo but I thought I'd do something groovy (what I do best), along the lines of Jean Pierre by Marcus/Miles Davis, with a little bit of slap and thumb picking? Might incorporate a few of my band's bass lines too, any thoughts on what to do. I was thinking five minutes tops?

Secondly, there is a sheet reading exercise. My keyboardist suggested that I recognise notes and where it is on the fretboard instead of what notes they are. It's not technically accurate but it cuts out a mental step and might help me. Learning around 10 positions shouldn't be hard....!

Also think I'll probably take my Jazz as it's easier to play and would fit the musical better than the Rickenbacker Any advice is helpful!

Hey guys,

My sexy new Jazz bass has arrived and I need to setup the neck. It came with TI Flats, which although lovely are not what I'm looking for. I've put on a pair of DR Marcus Miller roundwounds which are obviously higher tension and I have forgotten which way I need to adjust the neck?! There is a lot of fret buzzing, the saddles are high and the neck appears to be bowed backwards slightly. Should I loosen the truss rod and lower the sadles?

When I've seen Pete live, I've always loved his tasteful and elegant slap additions or requisites to the Dan songs. It's to me how slap should be done.

However, I've been playing bass for three years and I can not slap at all. Every time I try, I just can't master the slap bit. Popping seems easy but I can't slap the strings to get enough volume from the strings. My right hand technique just isn't right or up to scratch...

My current bass isn't great for slapping but when my (sexy) Jazz comes next week, I have no excuse and really want to learn to do this!

Does anyone have any suggestions where to begin, what to read, watch! Also any beginner slap tunes that could be worth trying?

Morning Bump!

My band are about to undertake a cover of Video Killed The Radio Star by the Buggles - it's a huge undertaking as loads of the parts are sequenced on our keyboardist's Phantom workstation so timing is going to be interesting.

Anyway, the bass line is fine and I'm happy with playing it. What is the notes being played for the fretless fills at 0:05 or the fourth bar if I am correct? None of the transcriptions mentioned it, I think it's something in G.

Any thoughts?

After extolling the virtues of this bass a few weeks ago, I've decided to pass it on. I'm going to look for something different for my backup bass after I gave this thing a go in brand practise last night. It's still a fantastic bass and excellent value for money but just not what I want at the moment. It looks the dogs bollocks and has 'that sound' that everyone is always after.

It's the new Squier 2010 Classic Vibe 60s Precision in Fiesta Red with the tort pick guard, as you can see from the pictures. There's no screws or thumb guard because I forgot to put them back on! They'll all be on when the bass is shipped.

So that's why I'm passing her on. Purchased just a few weeks ago from the The Bass Gallery in Camden for £329. It's in perfectly mint condition, never gigged! Comes with a set of D'Addrio Chromes and full setup with one of the most playable necks I've never had.

Looking for around £[b]240[/b] (ono) and ideally a quick sale. Grab yourself a bargain off the new thing here! I'll be in London next week or pickup from the North East area. More than willing to ship around the country for around £15/20 or so.

I could write about this ad nausem as my favourite bases at this moment are my Rickenbacker and my Squier Classic Vibe 60s Precision. I'll write a bit more once my dissertation is finished but I love them both. The Rickenbacker is harder to play, the neck is huge and body hurts your arm, while the tone can be enormously satisfying at times.

However, I'm finding at the moment my P is just much more fun to play and noodle on. The neck is so easy to navigate and with flats, the tone is exquisite. It's deep, throating and drives the music along. It's making me want an American Vintage '62 as Rich knows but I'm upgrading mine with a new pickup and electronics for the meanwhile. It plays like butter!

I was wondering this as well but I've spoken to Rich and it seems that the Mexican 50s with a new pickup might be a better bet! The Japan ones seem to vary in quality and they are around £500 for a used one (see fareastguitars.co.uk). I'm going to look at 50s Fiesta Red tomorrow and will report back!

Cool thanks guys! I know from experience that Jazzes can be harder to cut through the mix but I can't wait to give the CV P a go. I've seen something about Japanese reissues and Mr OldGit. Could you enlarge either here or in a PM?

Also, how do P-basses cut through live? I'm going to be giving mine a go with my LMII and Ampeg 15" cabinet and am wondering what sort of EQing will be needed to get that beautiful deep growly sound through the mix.

Nice one Clarky, I was listening to my Fleetwood Mac mix CD in the car today and was thinking - I wonder if there is a cheaper Alembic that gets 'that tone' and looks sexy. You seem to have grabbed one! Seems it was a good price, how's the tone compared to your Fender babies?

Does anything come close to these babies in terms of tone?

I've ordered my wiring kit from eBay and going to get an upgraded pickup. Where did you get your Seymour Duncan from for £45.00? Cheapest I have found is £56.00 from GAK but guessing it might be cheaper elsewhere

The reason I'm upgrading? I love the weight, colour and feel of the bass. The neck is sublime but I think upgraded electronics will really help. It has a little more something to it than the MIM standards in my opinion!
