1. I've been working one a new song this weekend and after listening back, I can see this needs a fretless but my pockets a pretty empty after spending on my beautiful 3001. I looked around and the cheapest thing I could find was the SX one. I quite fancied the short-scale Jazz with quilted maple top. I was thinking short scale so it's something smaller to take around.

Does anyone have any alternative suggestions? Also, how does one go about getting an SX into the UK and how much do they cost? Does anyone have experience of this bass...

    Thanks :)

  2. *puts on Dan obsessive hat'

The feel of bass on The Nightfly is rather different to me, than say Gaucho or Aja, the albums that Fagen worked on before his solo debut. In terms of sound, the tone was mainly P-Basses that had a smooth, traditional sound but with The Nightfly, Jazzes seem to have come to fore, with much more aggressive tones - take the bass on the title track and I.G.Y - not the same as you find on Dan's past albums.

Maybe Fagen was looking to update the sound slightly for the 80s and choose different guys? Rainey was the only fellow used from Dan days - no Becker here. I think it's probably to the same philosophy to get the right player for the right track and they chose whoever did the best performance. However, I feel that the bass has quite a similar feel and style throughout the album, so maybe they could have found one person, but then it'd wouldn't be obsessive masterpiece?

  3.
Wow, thanks for the review, Seb! It was great to meet you.

I have to say that The Sage is one of the best venues we play. The staff can't do enough to help you, and the acoustics are great. Plus a lovely warm crowd.

Apologies for missing out 'Do It Again', but we always look at previous set lists and decided to put 'IGY' in instead.

BTW, that version of 'Showbiz Kids' can be found on YouTube with Mike McDonald guesting on lead vocals. I decided to make the most of my 5-string and play the bass part an octave below.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OvAO3fr5Q4c
No need to apologise Pete, I'd take IGY any day over Do It Again. Hopefully I'll be catch up with you soon so might have my chance there. That's rather a cool version, I'm pretty sure that's how the 'Dan played it when I saw them live back in June. I think your slap bass fills made a more noticeable difference in driving the song forward but maybe Freddie Washington is banned from using these techniques by Donald and Walter, or maybe his P-Bass with flats isn't the ideal slapping machine (hides :) )

  4. Just thought I'd post a little gig review of this amazing performance that I witnessed last night at The Sage. I had previously spoken to Pete Academy about some Steely Dan bass line question and recently spoke to him about his Steinberger (decided to pass on this one, probably for the best...) and mentioned meeting up for a drink. We had a fantastic chat about all things bass and the Dan, it's always good to meet a fellow bass afincado. Turns out we are thinking about some similar things, including swapping our respective Ashdown heads for Markbasses :)

The gig itself. For those who haven't been to The Sage before, it's one of the best concert venues in the North East, if not England. Nearly Dan appeared in the second hall, not the massive hall one that has seen the likes of Jackson Browne and David Byrne this year. The sound is always crystal clear and the staff are always very helpful, last night was no exception. Hall 2 is a unique shape, with three layers in a circular fashion. It holds around 400 people and last night was a sell out, congrats to Nearly Dan for doing this! It would be a dream come true if my band ever makes it to play this hall. I bought my ticket not long ago and managed to bag a spot right in the front row.

Just around 8:00pm, the band came onto the stage and opened with The Boston Rag - slightly obscure choice but I loved it! For such a formal environment, the gig was very relaxed and the banter was terrific. The ten piece band had a very full sound, complete with two backing singers and three piece horn section. I never remember setlists but all the usual suspects where there, the only song that I felt was missing was Do It Again - it's one of their most well known songs and I was hoping, but you can't have everything. Some of the tasty rarities more than made up for it. As Pete said, they've been doing this for 12 years so chopping and choosing their songs would seem a good idea. The highlights in the set were Show Biz Kids (with some nice slap bass from Pete in a completely reworked version of the original), Josie (nailed it), FM (another rare number), Hey Nineteen (with some of the best trumpet playing I've ever seen) and Rikki Don't Loose That Number (including audience participation moment). However, the standout was the track IGY, from Donald Fagen's solo album The Nightfly. It was a number 20 hit in 1982 in the US, making it a semi-popular but still quite rare track. The band captured the feel perfectly. The reggae beat was so groovy and the audience loved it, to the surprise of the band. The solos in Reelin' In The Years were also spot on, I could go on and on...

The band appeared at the bar during the interval and chatted to their paying guests. I managed to quickly say hello to their singer/guitarist and trumpeter. The set length was also very impressive, with the first half coming in around an hour and the second half a little number, plus the romping encore of My Old School and Bodhisattva. The Dan's music wasn't made for dancing, but a few sprung up during Reelin'. As the fellow next me said, the musical abilities of each band member will blow you away. The horn section nailed their respective parts, their drummer went for an epic drum solo and made it work so well, the backing singers voices blended well, Pete's bass was perfect and drove all the tunes along while the two guitarists on the front line just got it right. Not over the top, not too little but just the right amount. The role of lead guitar was interchanged several times and each handled it perfectly. The singer also has the right voice for the Dan's tunes - Fagen's isn't a traditional singing voice but he got he vibe right.

So, in conclusion - go see Nearly Dan! If you like the Dan, you'll love these guys. If you have no idea who Aja is, then go see them anyway, their musicianship will blow you away. I loved it and had a great evening, thanks guys. If all things work out, I'm going to gather my band together to have a road trip to see them in Edinburgh on 23rd October!

Can't wait to see them again

  5. Javier seems to be a Lakland man, as we have just completed a transaction for my ex-Darryl Jones Skyline. I could not have asked for a better buy - the communication was quick and efficient, he sent the payment over without fuss and kept me informed throughout the process. He was very trusting. If you have any reservations about doing sales or trades abroad, this is the sort of fellow that proves it is just as easy as doing it at home.

Thanks for buying the bass, it was a real pleasure doing business with you. Seb

  6. I was selling the bass (Lakland Duck Dunn Signature) to Michael a few months ago and we encountered a few problems, mainly because the bass was damaged in transit and someone had messed about with the wiring, prior to myself purchasing the bass. However, we came to an agreement and settled the matter. Michael was a fantastic with communication and very understanding about the situation. Would do business again!

  7. I know this is rather late (by around six months) but purchasing the bass from molan was one of the easiest buying experiences I ever had. He was very friendly when we spoke on the phone, and he managed to get the bass to me, in time for the next band practise, where collective sighs of 'yet another new bass' were had.

An excellent seller, it was a pleasure doing business with you sir!

  8. With some regret, I'm putting for some sale my Lakland Darryl Jones. I purchased this from the delightful molan on this forum in February this year and have played it nearly every day since. It's got the most amazing neck I've ever felt on a bass - smooth, silkily and easy to maneuver on. The body is the sparkly Lake Placid Blue colour, the neck has rosewood fretboard with the block inlays as you would expect. However, the best thing about this bass is the weight. It weights only 8.4lb, making easy work for a night's gigging session. In terms of cosmetics, it's pretty good all around, with no major marks to the body. There is slight dent on the neck (pictured below) but nothing else major I can spot. I've used for three gigs this year, and just for rehearsing and recording besides that.

As I said, it's got some upgrades. Firstly, the pickups are upgraded to Aeros, which are the originals that Darryl uses in his bass. They have a little more growl and generally more powerful than the standard ones. Secondly, it has a Hipshot D-Tuner. Thirdly, it has a white pearloid pickguard, that was pre-ordered and specially made by Lakland for myself. Fourthly, it has the Lakland leather hard case. It's in beautiful white leather, with only a few marks and scuffs.

The reason I'm selling is because I've found a Rickenbacker 3001, something I've always wanted and it will work well as a backup to my 4003. If it was not for this, I would not be selling. It records very well and features on all the tracks of my band's upcoming EP.

I'm looking for £650 + P&P or pickup from the North East of England. Shipping is usually around £15 with my trusted carrier. Any questions, let me know. I'm looking for a quick sell, so I can still grab this 3001 from the USA. I'll get some more photos if people would like them.

    Seb

  9. Hey all,

I've put my old little Danelectro on eBay as it just doesn't get played anymore now I've got the Rickenbacker. Check it out here

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...#ht_1618wt_1040

    Any questions, let me know!

  10.
Thats a lovely bucket!

    The Rick looks nice too!

    Have a bump!
The Bucket is a long story, basically we do an avant-garde cover of Money (That's What I Want), like the 80s Flying Lizards version and it seemed a good idea (at the time of course) to have a bucket with spoons as percussion. It works well, sounds good and everyone in the band thinks I'm mad. He is known as Boris The Blue affectionally!

Thanks for all the offers so far but there has been nothing to tempt me yet!

    Seb

  11. I'm debating selling my Rickenbacker, but I'm not fully decided yet. My current band's sound doesn't really suit the Rickenbacker so I'm thinking about selling. It's a 2007 Rickenbacker 4003 in a beautiful blue-burst colour that I purchased for £1,500 only a few months ago. It's got two small dings on the headstock but beyond that, it's is in tip top condition. I've got a casual photo of it but if there is interest, I will post more.

I'm open to trades on this one, something along the lines

    * MusicMan StingRay (maybe pre-EB? not five strings, I love sunburst too!)

    * Fender Precision Bass (American Vintage?)

    * Anything cool really! A friend described my band as "an amalgamation of 80's pop ideas into a modern, relevant sound", very pretentious of course so anything that fits 80s synth-pop-new wave-music!

I'd be looking for around £1,300 cash too :)

  12. Afternoon everyone,

This was a massive impulse buy and one I didn't really need! I've always wanted to try out this short scale baby and see how it would go and won this on an eBay auction last week. It's a fantastic little bass that has more power than you would expect from something so small. It's a standard Fender Mustang Crafted in Japan with serial number S061917 in Fiesta Red with white pearloid pickguard. It's the same colour as the 50s MIM Ps if you have seen one of those.

On the whole, the bass is in pretty good condition but does have the odd nick or two that you would expect from a few years of playing. There is one quite large dent in the paintwork (as you can see from the photos) but this doesn't effect playing whatsoever. It's also where I rest my hand while playing so it's unnoticeable 90% of the time too.

It's strung with roundwound strings, either Rotosound or Fenders, not too sure. It's string-through and the strings have good action and don't sag or flop as you get with some shortscales. The sound is very powerful, similar to that a Precision but with a bit more trebble and brightness. There is clear definition in all the frets up and down the neck. I've played it several times through my Ashdown stack and it sounds just fantastic. The only reason I'm selling is that I don't need another bass and I didn't think buying through thoroughly :)

I'm offering this for the exact same price I paid - £330 for collection from Durham, North East of England or £350 with postage to anywhere in the UK. That's over £100 than a new Mustang and you are getting a bass that plays well, feels good and sounds fantastic. Any questions, offers or anything, just let me know! I'm not really looking for trades, just a clean sell.

  13.
PM'd
Replied - and a bump! This is a fantastic bass if you want the classic P thump with flatwounds or a nice growl with roundwounds. It looks and feels fantastic especially at the price!

  14.
Thanks Barrie! Bump here for a lower price - £475. This is really a great bass, everyone who has them has sworn by them. Great sounding, not even a year old. Minus the dent, it's in great condition too.

Any offers will be considered ;)
The bass is now on hold for fede162162

Update - the money is received, and the bass is being collected later today so I am very happy to say it is sold to fede162162

  15. Right, this the last from my bass sale. This is a 2007 Lakland Duck Dunn Signature Skyline bass in Candy Apple Red. It comes with two pickguards - the lime green one pictured as well as the standard white (both will be included). Currently strung with Rotosound Jazz Bass 77s flatwounds, this has that classic Motown thump you are looking for! With roundwounds, it gives a nice growl modern sound too.

I really love this bass but again, I just can't justify having all these wonderful things. It's got a Jazz-style neck (same as on the Darryl Jones signature) that is easy to navigate - I'd go as far to say this is the best bass neck I have ever played - better than my old American Precision, Jazz or StingRay. With the sparkly red finish and blocks, this is one to turn heads.

Only ever done one gig last term, and sounded brilliant. Comes with Lakland Deluxe gig bag too (not pictured). Has been setup professionally by guitar technician in Newcastle too.

Looking for around £600 and willing to ship as usual. Any questions, just let me know.

Update - The neck on the Duck Dunn is that same as that on the Joe Osborn signatuer. Thanks Dave to clearing this up!

  16.
Thanks for all the replies, in great Basschat style as usual I've been inundated with offers. The bass is now on hold for Spikyhedgehog, pending money heading into my bank account.

It does have a great look and I gave it a play this evening just to make sure I am doing the right thing. It sounds fantastic but I'm too used to the lovely smooth Lakland neck, opposed to the StingRay standard.
The payment has been received and the StingRay is on its way so it's now sold to Spikyhedgehog. Fantastic guy, great communication - would do business again!

  18. As part of my clear out, I'm going to pass on my lovely StingRay as I need the cash to thin out the collection. I've loved having this bass but I've managed to get away with just my Darryl Jones so here this one goes. It was previously owned by 'Ghost Rider' and before that, another fellow on this forum. Anyway, this is a rather good example of a 2005 Ernie Ball StingRay 2EQ. I've played it with TI Flats and you get a lovely warm thump but the StingRay growl is still there. The body is in pretty mint condition, with nothing major I could see.

Comes with standard Music Man hardcase and strung with Ernie Ball Slinkies. I purchased this just before Christmas for £650 so would quite like to get a similar amount back, but open to offers ;) Any questions, just let me know.

  19.
Quick plug to say that Seb is a top man - great to deal with & super efficient in organising trades etc. ;)
