1. Hi guys, I've got the Tony Franklin signature precision which I absolutely love, except the fact that The strings just seem to be a little bit loose when tuned to standard. They are hard to slap as there is no stability, and I feel like it is making the overall time more trebley. Problem is I love low action for all the quick stuff, but I've heard this can have an affect on string tension and tone. I've got a babicz bridge on there (previous owner put it on) if that could be causing any issues. Any advice?
2. Hi Guys, Have recently started to hit the transcribing hard, just wondering if there are some pieces you would recommend? Maybe something you found particularly interesting, not necessarily overly challenging! (Still getting the hang of the rhythm aspect of it..) Or good pieces to work on particular aspects... such as rhythms.. Thanks! Jack
3. No worries, it's really light, probably around the 4kg mark.
4. The finish looks slightly different to the picture, can pm pics if you're interested!
5. Looks lovely, if you're a Fender man at heart would you consider part exchange for a Fretted Tony Franklin Signature PJ4? Can find specs here! It's a lovely bass but I'm in the opposite boat of wanting to move away from Fender and have something a bit more unique! https://www.gak.co.uk/en/fender-tony-franklin-fretted-precision-bass-gold-amber/55211 Jack
6.
Is this sticky thread not of use? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/87414-how-to-make-a-good-looking-and-sounding-youtube-video/
Did read it however it didn't talk in much detail regarding the recording aspect! Was looking for info on gear etc
7.
I just finished up recording an album at home for a singer, I simply plugged my Precision with flats into one of our (I work for Focusrite) Clarett 2Pres and it sounded fantastic. This isn't a sales pitch at all, but just an example of getting the right instrument, strings and interface for the project you're doing, and you don't need much else. When I sent the completely un-produced stems to the mix engineer, he commented that all he needed to do was to put on a light compressor on them and it sat in the track wonderfully. Si
Ive heard these are great, where's the cheapest I can pick one up?
8.
The sound of a bass, raw, straight onto record is not always that wanted. If you like the sound from your combo, I'd recommend connecting the 'Line Out' from that into the 'Line' input of your interface (which is perfectly adequate for your purposes...). There is a 'Pre-Post' switch on the combo; you'll want 'Post' to get the sound of the combo's tone settings. The sound recorded will be that of your bass and combo, without the speaker colouration. If this is still not satisfactory, you'll either need pedals before the combo, between the combo and the interface or software pedals post-recording. Hope this helps.
This was really helpful thank you! I've got an Aguilar Tonehammer preamp pedal which has an XLR out, would I put this last in my chain and take the XLR from the pedal to the desk or use a jack lead like normal and take the signal from the XLR out of the amp?
9.
I would advice using DI and something like BIAS over trying to MIC at home. Especially if you're quite new to recording
Yeah I was going straight through the 'desk' rather than using a microphone, just never seems to be a nice tone :/
10. Hi Guys, Looking to record some bass at home, mainly just for youtube/instagram videos etc. What gear would you advise to capture the audio? I have a mac with garageband, interface-wise I have an Alesis io2 however I have never been overly impressed with the sound quality of this. Is this an issue of a cheap interface or do I need to have other equipment to make it sound better regardless of interface such as a pre-amp. Completely new to recording so any advice greatly appreciated! Jack
11. Awesome thanks. Is it advised to keep the brand all the same or would it all work just as well combining gear? I love the Aguilar gear and wouldn't mind having an aguilar cab in my rig.
12.
Yep, adding the same in again will in effect double what you already love.
Is it strictly a volume kinda deal or will it be adding anything to the tone? The reason I considered adding a 15" is because I assume it will bring a heavier bottom end to my tone..
13. Hey guys, I currently have the Markbass CMD 102P which has a 2x10 cab, I love it but feel like I need something a bit bigger. I'm hesitant to get rid of it and get a 4x10 cab and head because the small cab size is really handy for smaller gigs, so looking at getting an extension cab. Just wondering if people have any advice on what speaker size would be a good addition? I'm not a gear head by any standards but I'm assuming a bigger speaker size will push more air and be subbier? I'm figuring a 1x12 would be a good addition.. Cheers!
14. Hi guys, Currently studying a lot of jazz and as part of it have been doing harmonic analysis' of standards. I'm currently breaking apart 'Solar' a really nice Miles Davis tune, if you haven't heard it i'll leave a link below. I've gone through the tune and worked out it's based on a major blues, which uses parallel minors to incorporate descending ii-v-i's like in 'How High The Moon'. Then in the final bar, the switch from Dbmaj7 to Dmin7b5 is smooth as it's effectively just moving the root up a semitone, followed by a G7b9 to resolve back to the beginning of the progression. Here in lies my question.. I've seen a couple of charts (including my real book) which puts the first chord as a standard C-. However in IrealPro and many articles online about the piece, the first chord is a CminMaj7. Is it just left as C- in the realbook with no 7th suggested so that the maj7 is an option for chordal instruments/walking lines? There is a B natural in the melody line in that bar which would obviously clash if there were a flattened 7th in the chord. Because of the G7b9 in the last bar, it gives option to Harmonic Minor use for solos, so that would explain the choice of a minor ii-V to finish the progression on. I realise I may have slightly rambled and possibly answered my own question. Was just wondering if anybody had clearer information to give on this matter, and whether there is a reason for the MinMaj7 chord, other than to accommodate for the natural 7 in the melody line. I hope somebody has answers or if you haven't looked at the tune, hopefully I've given you some interesting points to look at! Thanks guys Jack https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QarhWvPQ610
15. Hey Collins. STOP FOLLOWING ME! Ha
16. Anybody fancy recommending some interesting pieces to transcribe? Getting into studying walking lines again and would love to hear what pieces other people enjoyed transcribing and why? (Interesting harmony manipulation etc..)
17.
Are we talking rosewood or maple fretboard?
Maple fretboard, Mexican Jazz. The thing is I'm not a massive fan of super bright sounding strings for fingerstyle, I like a deeper sound, but I also play a lot of slap. You can't have everything I suppose!
18. Hey guys, so I usually use rotosound solo or swing bass strings. I play a lot for work and general day to day practice and I've noticed that on terms of slapping particularly, that sweet tone dies off quote quickly (couple of weeks) is this just because I play a lot or can you recommend strings with a longer life span?
19. Yeah man they're really nice, the active switch is really handy.
