  1. Nice work. They’re a heap of fun to play. Mine doesn’t get too much use, but I do love playing it when I get round to plugging it in. Given the weight and dimensions it’s also helpful for my lad to knock about on.

Re: strings, Shortscale GHS Precision flats also fit just fine on for the Longhorn, it’s what I have on mine. Outside of those and the LaBella strings though I’m not sure what else works.

Could that be the same Dawn After Dark who used to support Balaam And The Angel?

I caught them in the aptly named After Dark Club in Reading many years ago....great gig.

I'm sure I have some pics somewhere.

I believe so, though my mate (the current bassist) wasn’t in the band back then.

  3. Not in a similar situation, but it sounds like you’re doing the best you can for your compadre in the circumstances. Could playing the odd new tune here and there in the set that doesn’t require keys work? Might give him the opportunity for the odd breather and scratch the itch for some new material too?

It comes with a hard case.

It has a Babicz bridge (although the picture on Thomann's site has a classic three pointer on it)

    It has a brass nut.

It's got a famous person's scribbles on it.

Is that enough to justify the uplift?  Maybe.  The amount you'd need to spend to get a regular 60's/Vintage Pro up to this spec wouldn't be too far off.  OK, I'll shut the hell up now.

I honestly applaud you trying your best be objective there! 🤣 But nah, those ‘extras’ ain’t even slightly justifying that price tag for me.

I was fortunate to pick up what looked to be a barely used 60s/Vintage Pro T-Bird a few months back, with a hard case for less then a third of the price of this, and they’re SUCH good basses.

Totally get the inflation stuff, it’s obvious everywhere, but the pricing of this is just dumb, irrespective of that side of things and particularly given how good the 60s/Vintage Pro basses are at a fraction of the cost.

  5. I briefly had a fretless one (the Jaco tribute). I needed a cheap fretless for a recording session and let it go shortly after, though if it had been getting use I’d have been happy enough keeping it as it was a really decent enough, usable fretless.

I certainly found it a little weightier than my other basses (mainly Fenders), but not prohibitively so.

  6. Must admit I found it difficult, just because I’ve never been a ring wearer previously I think.

Anyhow, after a number of resizes over a few years due to weight loss, I ditched the wedding ring for a tattoo on my finger instead. That definitely doesn’t get in the way.

  7. Honesty is the best and only policy that works, as others have said. Be kind, open and keep it fairly short.

And, hard as it can be at times to find a decent drummer, this can’t come into it.  Either they agree and stick (pun intended) around, they don’t agree but stick around for the greater good or they walk.

  8. I’ve taken a spare for a long long time, and have had cause to use the spare maybe three or four times ever. For me (though I don’t gig often these days) it’s still worth it for peace of mind, regardless of the very low likelihood of needing to use it. Think that comes down largely to your personality. I’d be fretting (pun very much intended) the whole night if I didn’t have the spare with me.

  10. I’ve not bought much at all year by previous standards, but the best is definitely this. Epiphone Vintage Pro T-Bird. Stupendously good for the cash (especially second hand with a case, as this was). I’ve replaced the knobs for black/chrome and, when I get round to it, will get a black scratchplate on it too.

Worst purchase? I’ve yet to find a use for the Stone Deaf PDF-2 pedal that I picked up to try with my octave up sounds. Nowt wrong with the pedal, just not what I’m looking for.
