I've recently gone all out reducing the relief on my four fretted basses (just to see what was possible) and both Squiers have taken to the adjustment exceedingly well (in fact the others have too happily) and there's no hint at all of any uneveness in the level of the fingerboard/frets and the action's wonderful :)

Excellent! I'd already taken a lot of the relief out vs the factory set-up so I'm impressed that it went even further!

I couldn't be happier with my Squier Vintage Modified Precision (bought from theyellowcar!). The fit and finish is excellent and the Duncan Designed pickup delivers as much output as my active basses. I've set up the bass myself; I have quite a low action with no unwanted fret buzz and I can honestly say the neck is great.

I'm glad it's still behaving! :D

3. The top end of the Mexican basses are really great instruments.

The Nate Mendal sig and the new Mike Dirnt sig were both excellent when I tried them recently. Well built, quality components and generally reasonable price points (if the Dirnt was just £150 cheaper...!)

I myself own two Mexican Precisions which are both great basses, especially for the prices I paid in the 2nd hand market.

To that point if you do settle on a higher end bass, make sure to scout the used market first - there are some bargains out there, and generally the price you pay is the price you'll get if you decide to sell on again. Unlike Squier/home-build basses which tend to lose 40-50% of the purchase price the second you leave the shop.

I'm certainly under the impression that I do. Which means nothing, of course. :)
Having watched various YouTube vids and read multiple reviews I now have inexplicable GAS for one of these:

Thing is I don't like the shape. In fact I don't like the look of it at all and probably wouldn't get on with the neck - also, it has precisely NO mojo whatsoever and wouldn't really fit in with the sleazy rawk image of my current band. And yes, I'm aware it's a 5-string!! :o

But I really really like the way it sounds (at least in the context of listening to a bass online) and can imagine it working very well for our material, so... does this mean that as I'm prioritising tone over appearance I'm (gulp) ... becoming less shallow?? :o

Also it seems to be something of a bargain and a LOT of bass for the money. Very versatile, too. By all accounts. What to do?? :(

I loved the TRBX I played the other day. Get it.

Still loving the colours and necks - feeling very tempted by one of these in either Surf green or Sky blue :gas:

Shameless plug (but I'm a paid up member) but I have an immaculate Surf Green example up for sale on here with an additional white pearl pickguard ;)

DECENT COLOURS.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH COLOURS? It's 2014; just offer normal customers a bass in classic colours like sonic blue and surf green.

The latest two colours in the American Standard range are absolutely awful. Cheap red and blue. Nice one.

Especially this. My biggest gripe with Fender is the 'exclusivity' of particular finishes to £1500+ instruments. Or guitars for that matter (lots of Surf Green Strats/Teles available off the rack!)

7. It's one of those that could be worth a punt, but by the time you add a speaker you don't really get much benefit from a space perspective.

When you look at it once you add another £100 for a cab it's almost worth dropping an extra £100 on one of the SVT-CL mini rigs. At least that would service the living room and the stage if required.

That OLP bass looks great
I've heard people say OLP's are brilliant
Much better than the SUB series

If they really are as good as people say
.....I want one :)

There is a used one in Regent Sounds (I think that was the place) on Denmark St going for £160. I tried it at the weekend and whilst the strings were completely dead it played nicely enough.

Fairly sure these were getting great reviews in our Gear> Bass guitars section, worth a look.
Dave is a great bloke so deal with that there confidence.

Thanks Karl.

They do indeed get great reviews in these parts (see the thread linked at the bottom of my OP) this one just isn't for me - I'm a Precision guy through and through.

What brand is it?
Angel - as Howard said above it's made by J&D who appear to be sold exclusively by Digital Village in the UK. The paperwork that came with the bass showed that it was made in China, and all in all the construction reflects that (I.e. It's quite good) the only 'work' I have had to do was to tighten the nut that holds the jack in place as it was a little loose on arrival.

10. Completely the opposite for me. I used to lust after Jazzes until I got my first Precision.

To answer your question Fender Japan offer a 'Smart Size' Jazz bass and I'm pretty sure it's available in white with a rosewood board. You would obviously incur the risks associated with importing a bass from anywhere (shipping, taxes, language barrier for any service issues) but it sounds like it could be everything you want.

http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp/jb62ss.html here you go

11. Moving this on as I am definitely not a 'Jazz' guy. Had it since December and it's rarely been played so it's in immaculate condition.

The output is pretty hot for a Jazz in my experience and the neck is nice and fast. There are a couple of slightly sharp frets but nothing that a quick file couldn't fix. I have butchered a white pearl pickguard that was meant for a US Jazz which you will see in the pics I'm posting shortly. It will also come with the original black guard which came off on the first day and as such is in perfect nick.

These are £120 + shipping new, I'm after £100 collected from SE London (willing to meet up within reason) or £115 shipped including the extra pickguard. If you would like it shipped you will have to bear with me while I source an appropriate box which may take an extra day or two.

Lots of positive discussion from other Basschatters here:

I was interested in the Fender FSR 'PJ Precision bass' in Seafoam Green but again was worried about the Jazz pickup being in the way. Shame because I absolutely love the colour.
I have to say I'm still tempted by that one, purely for the finish. The Jazz pickup has never been a problem for me, but that's more likely to be because I learnt on a P/J to start with, and then my Active P had been my only bass up until last summer when I bought a 'proper' passive P.
