  1. The barefaced 10s didn't work for me with my abm, nice and warm sounding, but lacking a bit of clarity to my ears - I felt like I was struggling to cut through the mix. Mind you they have a new version available with a tweeter which could be just what I would have wanted.

Not much about on videos, reminds me of a quiet big muff with the saturation.

Here's the video that got me interested. I just use the gain and none of the clipping diodes. Sounds great to my ears and sits really nice in a mix in a rock setting

Oh I've always heard great things about this Aftershock... will dig in further!

There's so much you can do with it via the neuro App - Its a bit overwhelming to be honest! Fortunately the out of the box presets are good. I picked one up for £80 so its a bit more budget friendly in comparison to Darkglass stuff

  4. I no longer use the valve drive on my ABM. I've switched to using a JPTR FX Jive pedal which I set right on the point of breakup - it fattens up the tone and I prefer the breakup over the built in valve drive in the abm.

I've also recently acquired a Source Audio aftershock. I'm just using the presets for more overdriven sound, but something like that might be worth considering. Its a super versatile pedal and my first impressions are pretty good.

  5. Got myself a source audio aftershock, so the mojo mojo comes off the board. excellent overdrive for the money. Works well on bass. Plenty of vids online where you can see it in action.

Just want to get back what I paid for it on here a few months ago. Slight knock to the paint in bottom Rh corner - can be seen in photo.

    Add £3.50 for postage.

I find them dead easy to move around , I only lift them to slide them into my van .

I'm pretty happy soundwise with My ABM evo 2 compact cabs, so I'd only swap them out for something lightweight that sounded equally as good!

Those 310's are fantastic looking cabs though

  7. Never been a rush fan, but I’m going to have to give Them a decent go after that!

I’ve always known they were top musicians but didn’t expect them to be that good. Geddy’s tone was fantastic - he seems to hit the strings with some force

  8. Just upgraded to an empress bass comp, so the TC spectracomp is up for sale. Bought ‘as new’ from here a couple of months ago.

If you’re not familiar, don’t be fooled by the one knob - this is highly configurable.
This is the best video for reference.

  9. Hi All, acquired a used American ultra jazz bass recently. I have found the bridge pickup is cutting out. You can get it to come back on with a wiggle of the pickup.

what’s the most likely reason for it to be cutting out? Loose solder joint maybe?

should I attempt to fix it myself given that I’m novice with this type of thing and it’s an expensive bass that I don’t want to brick! It’s also active to complicate things further

    cheers

    Alex

If you’re looking up the details, be sure to search for t-Rex comp nova too. They are the exact same pedal but with different casing.

The only person who can't hear the vocals (usually) is the drummer. Guitar(s) and Bass stand up front, with their heads close enough to the PA tops that hearing the vocals is no problem at all.

The answers are totally different if you're playing Glastonbury or the Albert Hall.  If you're playing the Dog & Duck to 40 people, then arriving in an Edwin Shirley pantechnicon and loading-in a ton (literally a ton) of PA kit is going to win you no friends and no re-bookings.

The main reason (IME) that someone needs a monitor is that everyone else has a monitor and the noise levels on stage make it impossible to hear anything unless you have one too. Take away everybody's monitors and you reduce by half the gear you need, reduce by at least half the volume levels on stage, provide everyone with lots of extra room, and save a fortune.

    I repeat ... you're playing a PUB!!!

I’m completely open to not having a monitor, in fact it’d be my preference - the less I have to spend the better right?

It’s interesting because in my years of gigging pubs to concert halls I honestly can’t remember not having a monitor firing at least the vocal back toward the band.

The setup I was thinking of would have been 2 speakers and a monitor - hardly a tonne of gear. But if we can do it with just 2 speakers then even better.

  12. I may be wrong here, but Pa speakers usually sit in front and pointing away from the band. Is it not hard to hear the singer if you don’t have a monitor.

I honestly can’t remember playing a gig without a monitor so I just assumed you needed one

  13. My band are looking to gig soon and we need a PA.

The band is drums, bass, 1 guitar (and on the odd occasion 2) 1 Main Vocal, &  1 backing vocal. Playing rock covers (Stones, who, Jam, etc).

The gigs will usually be in pubs an the most likely setup for the PA is  going to be Main Vocal, backing vocal and a kick drum going through it. There is also potential for guitar to go through it as the guitarist has just moved to a kemper but the intention is he will use his own cab.

Do you think one of the tower PA systems will be man enough for the job - I'm thinking something like the Yamaha stagepas 1k or similar.

I like the idea of something portable, because, as bass players we have enough to carry already and we get annoyed carrying stuff we do not directly benefit from!

Any advice will be greatly appreciated

    Thanks
