  1. I've gone from several pedals  (octaves, chorus, big muffs) to just an Empress bass comp and tuner.

I love the empress compressor, it adds a little bit of harmonic distortion. Its subtle, but it makes the bass sit better in a mix.

I do think a tiny bit of drive is essential

Play what you want. But my ears haven't rung in 3 years. And spectators tell us we're the best sounding band they have ever heard.

Quite the claim. I think you should tell us what band you are in. I'd be keen to see the best sounding band ever

  3. In terms of Aesthetics, Id say tc bh 800 would look pretty nice. I had one for a short while and it was pretty decent. Which was a surprise because I had a similar tc bq head and that was garbage. Theres one in the classifieds at the moment too.

I think for uncoloured the Aguilar AG might be better than the TH. Eich, Quilter, Genzler all have good reputations.

  4. Trace Elliot Elf for sale. Fantastic little amps and loud too.

I'd been using at as a backup to my main amp, So I never needed to gig with it but I have no doubt it would have done the job well if needed. Pairs nicely with GK 200w 4 Ohm cab also for sale.

    Thanks

I use my GK's with a Genz Benz NX 2x12 cab. 600W, 4 ohms, reasonably lightweight and holds it's own easily in any rock band I've ever played in (and there have been quite a few). AB'd it with some friends and a Barefaced Big Twin and all agreed that it sounded better than the BF.

Look out for a used one (will be under £450 so a bargain).

I have the Genz Benz NX 2x12 and they blow the BF210/410 (Ive owned these) away imo - they are in a different league. That said, I would presume they NX range are more similar to the BF12 range (which ive never used) - so maybe not a fair comparison.

I picked mine up for £350 2nd hand which is so much cheaper than equivalent BF.

I think it would work in any band  situation

  6. I recently had my amp die on me at a gig, Luckily there was another amp, that I plugged into my cab (with a different cable), and all was fine.

The amp that died was an Ashdown ABM 600. I sent it to Ashdown, and Dave Green at Ashdown said the power amp had blown & that it was something external that caused tit to blow - I.E the Cable or the Cab.

I did a resistance test with a multimeter for the cable and as far as I can see everything is ok.

I'm not sure how I test the cab, but given that the other amp I plugged in that night was fine, I'm inclined to think the cab is ok. My ABM was plugged in with a speakon when it died, and the other amp was with a 1/4 inch - might be important.

Anyway, the ABM is fixed, but I'm worried about plugging in to my cab in case it blows again. Is there any way to test the cab to know its electrically sound?

Okay. Is there an amp you'd recommend at a similar price point?

I'd personally go second hand. Id consider all the main players really Ashdown, ampeg, markbass. I like the trace elf at the same price point new, but I dont know if that would have enough power for you

Cheers - yeah the RH seems to be more highly regarded judging by the comments. Was the Spectracomp anything to do with the over compressed sound?

No, the BQ had a dial for a compressor. I think it was called Thrust? My feeling was that the compressed sound was something to do with stuff happening in the background.

It actually put me off class d heads. But actually its the amp that was the problem.

If it is the speakon itself it is easier to take the back of the plug and check across the wired terminals - there should be absolutely nothing measurable between them with it not plugged into anything. But if something has gone wrong, it is normally in the plug itself.

Easiest way to test the speaker is to plug a lead in that you know works, then check on the back of the terminals. You can check the pins in the speakon themselves, but they are a pain to get to while you are trying to read a meter!
Or much better idea, get a cheap cable tester that also does speakon leads, like the behringer ones.

Ah bit too far Alexa did you get sorted ?

So, I've just tested the cables, and nothing measurable across the wired terminals.

I'm not sure how to test the speaker, I plugged the speakon cable in to the back of the cab, then measured across the terminals of the speakon cable and got a reading. I tested some 1/4 jack cables and different cabs & I always get a reading across the terminals when a cable is plugged in - so i guess thats normal.

Pretty worried about gigging it now. Will give the head a run at volume with a different cab I think.
