  1. Digital music is so much easier! However, the thing I do like about physical is your more likely to listen to an album in its entirety. I do have Vinyl, but I don't buy into 'Vinyl sounds better' argument - especially for modern music, which is mostly recorded digitally
  2. Twincam - I Couldn't agree more! The shop in question was PMT - perhaps a smaller independent store would take the time to do this.
  3. Thanks for the advice twincam - I had no idea what ski jumping was (I do now after a little investigation). Antylocker - I'm waiting for that moment when I just know its the one I want. It was hard to tell in the shop I tried as the setup was not great - I don't know if its typical that display basses are not set up particularly well!
  4. Antlockyer -Did you find there was any variation in quality in mia p basses?
  5. Very sensible advice Marc. In many ways I do like the idea of buying used, just because you don’t lose any money on the bass if and when you come to sell. I do worry that there will be something wrong when buying used - even though my past experience has been generally positive. Ill keep an eye out for Sadowsky met..... Chris. I can’t say I’ve ever seen or heard of one before.
  6. It would definitely be a 4 string I would want, which if buying new they would need to order in for me, which would then require a deposit, etc.
  7. I am in the process of getting a new bass because... well, why not! (the kids don't need a holiday do they?) . At the moment based on what I've tried so far its most likely to be Fender P bass or a Musicman stingray - both retailing between £1300 - £1500. At this point the P bass is ahead. The shop only had a 5 string MIA in stock. I tried that & a MIM P Bass and the stingray. The fender MIA felt and sounded better than the MIM. The Stingray felt lovely and after a lot of mucking about with the EQ I found some tones that I really liked - I di find the sheer amount of options a bit much (dual humbuckers and 5 way switch). what may be clouding my judgement is that the setup of all the basses I tried were questionable - Far higher action than I would want. So the P bass is probably in the lead at the moment, my question is should I buy new or old? Has there been a drop in QC recently? are there some years of manufacture that should be avoided? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  8. Ha! Yeah, I was actually referring to the lp. I’ve heard a few tracks and the bass sound & style is pretty similar on the tracks I’ve heard. im surprised Alex Turner played the bass, although I think I read that it was originally gonna be a solo record. Makes sense as it’s so different to anything they’ve done before
  9. So, I caught a bit of the mercury music prize last night. It’s the first time I’ve heard any of the Arctic monkeys latest stuff and I really quite like it - I do know it’s not to everyone’s taste though! Anyway, I really like the bass sound on the track they played and was wondering if anyone knew how to get that. To me it sounds like he might be playing with a mute and some sort of effect - almost like an Echo Any thoughts? thanks
  10. I see someone mention jimi Hendrix bass players Noel redding and billy cox. my favourite bass playing on any Hendrix track is have you ever been to electric lady land. I love the playing on that track and I think that was Hendrix playing bass

  12. I'd love to know the details if this actually happened
  13. Anyone who has played live will have dealt with, at best nervous energy, or, at worst crippling nerves. Thankfully for me the nerves have never got the best of me where I can't play, and the majority of the time now I just have a nervous energy. Anyway, I thought it would be useful to go over the things I do to help deal with the nerves. 1. Be happy with your setup. I'm usually happy when I can play my own setup, but unfortunately as a bass player you are asked to play through house amps, or they take a d.i signal from the bass rather than your amp. During soundcheck make sure you are happy with the sound. 2. Warm up. There's nothing worse going on completely 'cold' - particularly if the first track is fast/complex. 3. Know the material. The better I know it the more at ease I am. 4. Make eye contact with audience. When the nerves have been at their worst I tend to look down at what I am playing and want the ground to swallow me up. Often it's worse in your head compared to the reality of what is happening. I find that if I look up and see the reaction of the audience, it makes me feel so much better. Anyway, I just thought I'd share this as it might help someone out. Alternatively feel free to share anything you guys do to deal with nerves. cheers Alex
  14. I'm looking for the best way to mount my T. rex fuel tank jr underneath my shiny new pedaltrain nano plus. Im guessing people on here would have done it. What's the best way to go? Velcro, cable ties, do I need to remove the feet on the psu? Increase the foot height on pedal board? any advice would be greatly appreciated. thanks
  15. I'm 38 and I don't actively look for new music too much. However, every now and then I seem to stumble across a band I really like, the last one being king gizzard and the lizard wizard - who fortunately enough are rather prolific when it comes to making albums. i did use Spotify for a while, and the suggested track feature is pretty good. But overall I think it makes music feel a bit 'throwaway'
  16. Yeah, you are probably right - 'buy cheap, buy twice' an all that! No resale value most of the time either! I am pretty tempted now by the valeton
  17. Thanks for the link. I'd seen the valeton and just skipped past it because.. well, for no good reason really. After a bit of research this does look good, although it doesn't do octave up. It's a bite more expensive than the Valeton but it is analogue. at £60 it's not too far way from the Ehx octave multiplexer Decisions!
  18. Hi chaps, im looking for a pedal to thicken up my sound when the guitarist is soloing. I usually stick to the top of the neck and was thinking it might be nice to have just a touch of the higher octave. I am on a budget though! ive come across the ammoon octa pedal, it looks ok in this video anybody had experience with this pedal or this brand in general. Any other recommendations for pedals for around the same amount (£40) would be most welcome thanks in advance!
  19. Really hard to find any reviews. Anybody using these bad boys - are they better than the ag-4j-60 & 70. Cheers Alex
  20. Cheers guys, Skidder unfortunately the sd pickups do not ship to U.K. Grangur - do you mean a pedal or a new circuit in the.bass? Bertbass - the import duties are listed at time of purchase, bit of a pain, but the vouchers have to be spent on the us site
  21. I have 2001 Mexican Jazz Bass & I'm looking to upgrade. Unfortunately I cant fund a new bass purchase. I'm looking at other ways to improve the sound. I'm thinking pickups. I have some Amazon vouchers that only work at the .com site & not .co.uk - which means whatever I buy will have to be shipped from U.S - So pickups are nice and inexpensive to ship but I am fairly limited to what I can get. I was hoping if someone could advise on the following at give an opinion as to whether they will improve the sound. I like the look of the Aguillar AG 4J-60, but I'm basing that on.... well, nothing actually. It would be great if someone in the know could give me their opinion - I play in a Rock band. 22. Hi guys, I have just bought a Hartke ha5500 rated 550w @ 4ohms (my ashdown mag c210 just wasn't loud enough!). Anyway I have a 250w@8ohm Ashdown mag extension caninet and for the short term I may use this with hartke till I get a decent cab. From what I have read, am I right in saying that because the speaker is 8ohm the wattage to the speaker will be less (closer to the 250w speaker rating). With regard to buying a new cab, I will probably only buy & use 1 - should I ideally get a 550w or above at 4ohm? Cheers
  23. Well, I had a feeling I was doing something wrong. I was using the pod cos i could get a bit more volume. That shouldn't be a problem now cos I just won a hartke ha5500 on eBay - now to find a decent cab to pair it with...
