  1. Here we have an absolutely immaculate Guy Pratt "Betsy" bass. The bass belongs to my dad, and I'm selling it here for him. Bought brand new last year and has hardly been used since, the bass comes with the original gigbag, and he even still has the original shipping box, so postage is possible too. The only reason for the sale is he's just bought an early 70's Rick and needs to recoup some of the cost!

    Here are the specs:

BODY Classic Burgundy Mist finish, with period-accurate, mint-green scratchplate

NECK Satin finish Bass Centre "Super Slim Sixties"® maple neck with Maccasar ebony fingerboard

    PICKUPS EMG Active J pickups

BRIDGE Retro roller bridge with knurled saddles for string width adjustment

HARDWARE Engraved Chrome Neck Plate, Chrome Control Plate, Vintage style Black Control Knobs

EXTRAS Bass Centre padded gig bag

I've played it and it's a wonderful instrument. Some great tones to be had, and plays really nicely. Weighs in at just over 9lbs.

These are £600 odd new, and this is as new, so save yourself a few quid!

  2. Up for sale is my 1st Gen Backbeat in Black. It’s in excellent condition, having only been used sparingly as a backup, or on gigs where I use a second bass (maybe 1% of my gigs 🤣) and has lived in its own foam cutout in my peli case.

Comes with the charger, and the original box and soft case, I think I have the original patch lead too.

Pics coming soon. Collection welcome from Windsor, or I can post at buyer’s expense.

  3. A little off topic, but anyone here fancy repairing a Future Impact for me? It has a dodgy pot, so I bought the correct replacement, and then managed to knock a little SMD component off while trying to remove the old pot. I've never delved into the SMD world but I know a few of you DIY'ers have, so thought I would ask here!

  4. I used to leave it in the “On” position and just power the board up and down as normal. Now I think about it, I had to make a little riser for it because of the battery door locking mechanism.

Regarding the bypass, yes it could sound pretty cool. However, I always found that to have the gain control where I wanted it when the pedal was on, it made the clean signal far too quiet when it was off, so it always lived in a true bypass loop when I had it.

My favourite mode was LP, with the “Up” filter, Range on Low, Peak at around 75% and Gain set to where the filter opens just a bit when you play normally, and then wide open when you dig in. For the bass I was using at the time, that was around 30-40%. Classic envelope squelch!

  5. Probably my favourite filter ever. Wish I never sold mine now! I had it modified by the guys at the GigRig with 2 Virtual Batteries (pre-production prototypes IIRC) so that it would take a standard Boss 9v and could be daisy chained with other pedals. If it wasn't so damn huge, had a bypass LED, and didn't have so much tone suck in bypass, it would be the perfect envelope filter, bar none!

I like the idea of the Backbeat end of the jack actually fitting into the body of the Backbeat so it’s harder to be pulled out. But the bass end just looks terrible. Especially if the jack on your bass is front mounted!

Loving the new strap mount though!

Having got somewhat fed up with the jacks pulling out of my Backbeat I set about making a clamp system to hold them in.  At the same time I followed Higgie's idea of two short cable which live with the Backbeat and strap. I thought about all sorts of ways to do it and the simplest way seemed to be using the nuts on the jack socket to anchor the clamp to the case.  I found Neutrik jacks were too large and difficult to anchor however these Amphenol jacks have a convenient shoulder to clamp against.  No problems so far.

Excellent! I’d had a similar idea but didn’t know how to implement it. Sterling effort there mate!

The thing about the Octamizer is that it sounds great, but a. Stops at about C on the A string, and b. Goes glitchy as a held note fades; I find that it plays me, rather than vice-versa.

Have to say my experience is completely different. I have two on my board, both of which track down to around G# on the E string, and it’s one of the least warbly/glitchy on held notes i’ve come across. Certainly less so than an OC2. I’ve had a couple of them and sold them on in favour of the Octamizer.

Apologies for the newbie question and that I haven't read all 75 pages of this thread, but I'm wondering if a HX Stomp will work as a replacement for a selection of discrete pedals.

My current pedals are these, but I always seem to be tight on board space and end up with one left over:

    • Phaser (MXR Phase 90).
    • Chorus (MXR Black Label).
    • Octave down (EBS Octabass. Aguilar Octamizer).
    • Octave up (EH Mosaic).
    • Flanger (I don't have one and have no space on my board anyway).
    • Tremolo (won't fit on my board).
    • Envelope filter (I have a Bass Synth Wah and previously had an Aguilar Filter Twin).

So, I'm wondering if a Stomp would be a way of consolidating them into a single unit.

I don't really need amp modelling, as I'm using an EBS Microbass 3, and I have a Dave Hall DHA-1 valve pedal for a bit of grit.

I'd likely run the Stomp via the Microbass's Fx loop, along with my Source Audio C4 synth pedal.

I kept my Octamizer (well, both of them!) as the octave in the Stomp just didn’t quite cut it for me. It should be able to nail everything else (especially the modulation) though. Although there have been a few negative comments regarding the filters in the Stomp, i’ve found the Auto Filter effect to be more than satisfactory!

Just had an update RE the Backbeat G2

It will use a user replaceable 18650 battery giving more power and charging will be via USB3!

Still sounds great - I’ve put myself down for the pre order in Feb. Waiting on info re cabling maybe next.

This is a big plus for me. I'm down for a preorder too. Looking forward to it!

Most fretless simulations act on the attack of the notes. The 'Autoswell' effect in the dynamics section will fade in the volume as each note is played- set to act quickly it can soften the front of the note enough to give the right impression. If you have much in the way of fret rattle in the sustain of the note, rolling off the tone, or having an EQ do something similar, can reduce that hint of metal-on-metal in the sound.

All good advice. Add a touch of Chorus and you’re golden!
