From a personal point of view, I've never been one for dancing
The worst thing about being a non-dancer is that even though everyone knows you are a non-dancer and have never danced in the 20 years they have known you, they still think that you are going to dance if they ask you... No... I haven't danced for the previous 100 times you've asked me so why on earth do you think I'm going to this time?
... there's no way to get a real sense of the reality of musicians' life in the UK from basschat.
That's preposterous... next you'll be telling me that facebook is not a reliable indicator of public opinion on political issues.
...but if you still have Marleaux strings in it, bin them! Horrible things almost made me sell the bass! Then I put D'addario's on it and all was well.
I believe it does still have the stock strings on it (tapered B and E) I will change them for prosteels (as I do with every bass anyway). I'm looking forward to having a proper play around with the bass this weekend
I think someone said it was modified Glockenlang.
It wouldn't surprise me if it is a Glockenklang pre as the EQ seems to respond in a very similar way to my amp (blue soul). I like it it's simple and musical.
Same. I've rarely seen a 5-string at a gig.
I think it depends on the genre. There is a pub over the road from me that puts on live music every night and each night features a different sub-genre of extreme metal. You hardly ever see a four string bass on that stage... then again you hardly ever hear an audible bass note either

I've had some dealings with Mark in the past and he's a stand up guy honest, quick to respond to any queries and manages to get hold of some really interesting gear Enjoy the new bass, looks like a winner

I'm all about gigging but it doesn't seem to be a priority with the projects I've been involved with recently... Seems to be more of an inclination to record a demo (and it is definitely a demo not an EP... in my mind an EP is an official industry backed release not something you've done yourself... ) and build an online profile before getting out there and actually playing anything. Although it is not my favored type of music, the projects where I've been a sideman for an acoustic singer / songwriter type person seem to be far more gig focused, so perhaps I shall seek out a similar opportunity just to get playing live again on a regular basis. I do enjoy recording / rehearsing / writing and all the other aspects of being involved in an originals band, but for me the end objective is definitely gigging

Wal MK1 Fretless - Violet Stained Sycamore Facings *Sold*
CamdenRob replied to CamdenRob's topic in Basses For Sale
Oh yeah - I was its first owner - what a gorgeous Wal that is ... someone will be very pleased with it. GLWTS Rob!
Thanks Oliver It pains me to sell it as it's so beautiful and sounds so good... I am having a fretless sixer built and the facings on this are the inspiration I'm thinking of a faded sonic blue type hue over sycamore... although there is plenty of time for me to change my mind! For any interested parties, spiritchaser was the original owner and ordered this bass from Wal, so if anyone is qualified for a second opinion it is him -
Wal MK1 Fretless - Violet Stained Sycamore Facings *Sold*
CamdenRob replied to CamdenRob's topic in Basses For Sale
Gents I have had a bit of a deluge of interest in this so I am going to put it on hold whilst I work through the various permutations... It is not sold (so mods please leave the thread open), but I want to work through the various offers I have had already to keep things fair, before inviting any further interest. Thanks for all the PMs, I will reply to everyone. This is a wonderful instrument and I will be sorry to see it go. -
Wal MK1 Fretless - Violet Stained Sycamore Facings *Sold*
CamdenRob replied to CamdenRob's topic in Basses For Sale
I have contacted Paul to see if they can give the bass a full service (I'll drop it off weekend after next - 6th Feb) and then ship it on to a potential buyer direct. So there may be a shipping option (will cost a bit extra as it'll be fully insured) If the pickup option doesn't take your fancy... So still pick up only for the moment but will confirm when I hear back from Wal -
Wal Mk1 quarter lined fretless – 2014 Violet stained Sycamore facings W4205 £3800 – Bank Transfer only I have another fretless Wal being built at the moment and although it is not due for a while, I would like to sort out the money for it sooner rather than later, as I suspect I may be looking to buy a house around the time the bass will be completed and money will be needed elsewhere. So it is with great regret (I simply cannot keep all the basses I love) that I must offer this up for a new home. This is a wonderful example of a Paul era Wal. The bass is in the same fantastic condition it came to me in, with no dinks or scuffs on the body, headstock or the back of the neck. The ebony fretboard has very slight wear from the nickel roundwounds I have been using on it, but hardly anything really. I will weigh the bass tonight and post the result. It is a Wal so it is not featherlight, but it is much lighter than my sixer and balances well both on a strap and seated, more so now that I have replaced the tuners with Schallers new lightweight version (original tuners included). The price reflects what I have tied up in the bass after a complicated trade to acquire it last year when I moved my original MK3 sixer on. It is about a grand cheaper than a similar spec bass would be to order today and you will not have to wait two years for it! Replicating these exact facings would also be difficult. Bass comes with the Wal branded hardcase and a set of truss rod / saddle adjustment tools. Bass is currently strung with D’Addario nickels. I have a vehement hatred of courier companies and have a strong preference to have this bass collected or deliver it to a train station within a reasonable distance of London. I will leave the bass up for a couple of weeks as collection only (from Camden NW1) before I will consider shipping. I am not looking for any trades on this bass, cash sale only. You are more than welcome to come round and try the bass

After an epic battle with UPS I finally have this bass home I will do a full review at the weekend (I am at work for all the daylight hours during the week) when I can get some decent pictures, but in short I'm very pleased with it I've not had a stack knob arrangement on a bass before and I quite like it, but I'm used to EQing each pickup independently on my Wals anyway, so it feels natural. If I'm honest I would prefer a blend and overall volume as opposed to the volume for each pickup, but it's not too difficult to dial in what your looking for I really like the tone with flats and the neck pickup tone rolled off. It gives an almost P bass like plumbyness to the sound but still retains some cut from the bridge pickup tone being set fully open... It's a nice musical cut though, not clanky or harsh. Only thing I find a bit odd about the bass is the reverse tuners... I've not had them before and it just feels like your turning them the wrong way! There is nothing new or different about the design of this bass, it is a solid jazz bass, well put together from quality parts, with some nice touches to make it stand out a bit. All in all, with the exchange rate as it is at the moment, around £1250* for a custom colour jazz bass with electronics etc to your own specification, delivered to your door is not bad in my eyes *prices may have changed since I ordered
I have Pm'd the buyer of my lost Jap P bass on the off chance he still has it and might consider selling it back to me long shot but I thought I might as well ask....
Sadly it transpires that my old Jap P has moved to pastures new and now apparently resides with the bloke from the aussie Pink Floyd tribute... so chances of ever seeing that again seem minimal.
(TV adverts have led me to a few gems over the years).
This is very true... Pretty much the only new music I have discovered since I was actively seeking stuff out as a younger man, has been something that has caught my interest on TV adverts, or been in the background of something I've been watching... quite often I've then gone on to buy an album etc of the artist in question.
Personally I think there should be a one-day BC Amnesty, during which we all have the right to get back any bass we used to own.
I suspect you may want to take advantage of such a day further down the line considering some of the lovely gear you've let go recently... I have Pm'd the buyer of my lost Jap P bass on the off chance he still has it and might consider selling it back to me long shot but I thought I might as well ask....
I've found a Limelight P makes a good doppelgänger while one is amassing the funds for the genuine article...
I'm very tempted to get Mr Peterbuilt to build me a nice P. ... to be honest though in an ideal world, I'd like my old Jap P back that I sold on here a couple of years ago
When I was playing in my classic rock covers band I could quite easily have got away with a two string bass (E and A) for the majority of the songs we played. Conversely with The Terrortones despite being the most musically conventional of all my originals bands I have made the most use of my 5-string basses for both the extended range and playing positions.
Yeah to be honest I reckon a two string would be enough for half the stuff I do in bands...
-
I would love an old P bass... Can't really justify the cost at the moment, but some day maybe
-
I can add another option if anyone really has a 3,2 or 1 string bass as their main player?
-
So early days but around 60% four stringers... That's not far off what I expected, maybe a little lower. A couple of comments already about playing a 4 string P... It'd be interesting to see what percentage of players play a four string P bass versus anything else... I bet it's quite high... maybe Leo did get it right first time It would certainly show that for a number of people, not much of note has been done to improve upon the original design of our instrument over the last 60 years... asides perhaps a move to lighter weight basses in recent times.
-
Hi Guys, I'd be interested to know how many people out there are primarily playing basses with Five or more strings... Perhaps not in some genres, but I reckon overall that the humble Four is still by far the most popular Personally I play a six string for almost everything as having the extra strings / weight doesn't bother me and I like the flexibility. However I could get away with a fiver for 99% of the material I play in the bands I've been in and to be honest, a four would cover well over half of it... I also like a four for the odd occasion I dabble with slap and for reading, just to keep things as simple as possible. I'm aware that many have numerous basses with differing numbers of strings, this question is really about your main instrument or the one you use most of the time
