Ok nice, but why play it on a bass if you want the whole thing to be in the guitar range of pitch (you know what I mean) Anyway - oh wise ones, what is the bass he is playing?
I suppose he liked the tune and wanted to play it on bass...? Does one need any other reason to play any tune on any particular instrument? And I think the bass is a Zon - one of these: http://www.zonguitars.com/zonguitars/vb.html M

Excellent stuff - so hard not to order a second Sei isn't it? Martin was finishing off a four string Flamboyant for Neil Murray and is building a Jazz for John Currie - both of whom I think are Sei owners (I know John is for sure). Anyway I love the sound of your fretless - if I didn't already own a cracking fretless myself I would be tempted to ask Martin to make me one - but as it happens I was playing mine this morning and it just rocks my world! I've had the bass for four years now and it's really 'settled' in - the tone and playability are just amazing - and it looks great too. that's made of just African mahogany with an ebony board. I decided on a Sei Jazz next as that's something I've been craving for a while now and I love the Single Cut's exotic look I don't really feel the urge for another eye-popping bass - it's already sounding and playing sweeter due to settling in after a few months in its new home. I know it's going to be a bass that 'keeps on giving' as it gets older and 'matures'. Anyway - that's really exciting news you've taken the plunge again - I look forward to seeing this progress - should be another belter of a bass. Mike

Bass Shapes (jazz, bass, singlecut, completely original)
urb replied to EBS_freak's topic in Bass Guitars
Hey guys It's a weird one isn't it - I guess I really loved some of the Fodera Single Cuts, purely on an aesthetic level they did 'float my boat', obviously Matt Garrison's Imperial design was one but I also Tom Kennedy's Empiror single cut is pretty lovely. I will admit I wasn't always taken with the Sei designs a few years ago but I remember being in the shop when a couple of the first single cuts were finished by Martin. Particularly the one reviewed in BGM - it used to belong to dude called Kevin Lindsey (he's sadly had to sell it) - and that just blew me away when I saw it. A coulpe of others with a Thuya burr top and some of the recent ones (see below) just really appealed to me. So when I finally ordered mine - after three or more years of deliberating (and being skint) - I'd given it a lot of thought and really knew what I wanted. That goes for the wood choices, the buckeye top, the pups etc. But I am still a fan of more traditional shapes - I love the way MTDs, Roscoes, most Nordstrands, and some Sadowskys look - I personally think it also really comes down to the instrument's personality - Ped's Vigier is a prime example of that - I think my old 1990 Thumb bass was another. Basses with a distinct character that overides quirky design or other negative factors like being too heavy etc. Now that I have my 'exotic' bass I'm not tempted to get another one - why have ten Ferraris? - I love my SC it plays great, sounds great and always gets a great reaction on gigs and just generally - so that's great - I don;t need another. I also love my fretless which is based on a Tobias body shape: So I think with a lovely Sei Jazz 4 string I'll have all I need - the thing is not what gear you have, it's what you do with that counts. So I'll keep working on that no matter what I own. Anyway - that's enough from me - couple of beauties to close with: Cheers Mike -
Just a quick +1 from the comfort of my sofa, really good day really well organized and good friendly atmosphere. It was great having talks as well and I thought Adrian Ashton coming down was great as well it's good that we made him welcome, I really enjoyed getting to know some new faces and try some tasty gear and yes Ped's Vigier is simply amazing, I got a little carried away at the end Thanks again to all who attended, though I feel a bit sorry for the wedding party there as well, guess it was bass players revenge for all those crap weddings in the past Mike

I thought I'd struggle to sell my 18-year old Thumb bass considering the current climate but I did - and for £1000 (via The Gallery) which after their 15% comission was actually what I was hoping for £850... good quality instruments are a good investment me thinks. M

Later Live with Jools... and the drummer from my band...
I thought Imelda May was bloody GREAT.
I saw her earlier this year do a little showcase thing and I thought she was alright - but I have to agree with you - she was surprisingly good, nice slappity-double bass thing in that tune as well - but she and the band really gelled, it was cool. Aparrently there's another Roots Manuva on the longer Friday edition of the show so more funky drumming from Soph to enjoy - and Elbow were ace too. M -
Dude. "You're the bass player from HER band"
Fair enough - it's not actually either of our's band - it's the singer's band - but hey I've been playing in bands with Sophie for about three years now... whatever the case, she rocks. M -
Hey peeps Just wanted to big up my friend and fine drummer Sophie Alloway, I've been lucky to play with her in a couple of bands in the last two years and we're currently working on an album with a singer that i hope I'll be able to preview somtime soon. Anyway she's a brilliant player and is now working with Roots Manuva and because of that she was live on Jools Holland just now. If not watch it again on Friday, or listen to the first track on my Myspace page here. It's rare to find a drummer that has a great sense of groove and timing and very little ego, AND happens to be a female as well, Sophie is going to have a great career ahead, look out for her on Roots Manuva's tour this October. Sorry to go on just wanted give the girl some props Cheers Mike

Wow this thread is still raging on - though it's good to see all points being made with both vigour and clarity. I heard a great quote this week that I think is actually at the heart of the two sides of this debate, it was from a guy who just died actually, a sax player called George Lee. I'm sad to say I never knew the guy or his music but I think this is a great bit of advice to anyone, not just bass players/sax players/whoever: 'To be a jazz musician, you have to think of yourself as an athlete. You have to practise every day. You have to have stamina. So, practise your scales but, when you get on the bandstand... ...PLAY MUSIC!' How you do that is up to you. Mike
Didn't you play a Warwick for years and years??
Yes, but it was made in 1990 in Germany before it became the global monster of a company that it is today - that bass definitely 'different' from a lot of souless planks of wood that bear the 'W' on their headstock today - obviously just my opinion but that Thumb was lovely - far too heavy and frustrating in terms of sound sometimes but a great bass that served me well for 18 years. Sadly it's now gone to a new owner - so I am no longer a warwick player - and a happy one at that. M -
I am living the dream as we speak :0)
That makes two of us... yay. I love this thread and I can only +1 to: GAS Ashdown Yamaha Rotosound (YUK!) Ampeg Anything made by Warwick since 1990 A couple of my own: Spectre basses er....(ducks) Foderas But I'll have to disagree with the Sei Jazz basses - as first off I've just ordered one - and secondly they don't have to sound 'clean and polite' - I'm sure they can sound downright rude and nasty if you want them to - it's all in the fingers... Cheers M -

Hey I was reading the ole free paper on the tube yesterday morning and rtghe metro decided to give half a page to a story on this young bassist - Yannick Koffi from Australia - home to Tal Wilkenfiled too (another young bass prodigy). Anyway I just looked the kid up on the net and there are a couple of cool videos - he's starting out right learning the classic basslines and for a little guy he actually puts a lot of older players to shame - as long as he keeps his feet on the ground and does his own thing I think he'll be amaing in few years time. Playing 'Sir Duke' by Stevie and 'Now That We've Found Love' M

Hey dudes - thanks for all the positive comments - I can't believe how excited I am about this bass. I've always wanted a Jazz bass but never found one I really loved - and that was my concern in that I could spend as much time finding a vintage one and pay just as much money as commissioning one from Martin - who I know will make it the way I want it - hence 24 frets and a cool contemporary design... Anyway - the wait begins... I shall keep you posted Mike
