3.55 kg on the kitchen scales, not too sure how accurate those are but it feels like a toy compared to my long scales. How's your hand doing Clarky?

Thanks Chris, I will need to do some sums but WANT!

My left forefinger is still pretty b*ggered from the accident but a bit better, thanks, and with physio I can at least play a bass in my usual agricultural style! Fretting in the lower positions is trickier, as I discovered when I bought a P bass and a J bass not so long ago, thinking I was on the mend - hence I think in the interests of expediency and life being too short, I am going back to mainly focus on short scale basses (plus my vintage Ric as it looks cool).

  2. I didn't go to see Genesis on their last tour precisely because of the decline in Phil Collin's voice - and that's despite the huge nostalgia draw for me (my fave band in mid/late 70s and my first ever gig, Earls Court 1977). But I am just one opinion and clearly from the BC thread during the tour, loads of fellow BassChatters loved it. Its not for me to tell them they are wrong!

In short, I don't think aging musos should hang up their boots unless they want to, even if their musical abilities noticeably decline. Besides, they can still use studio trickery to sound good (take a listen to new Judas Priest single Panic Attack and you wouldn't think Rob Halford has lost any of his startling voice and range)

  3. Hey Chris, no these are polished nickel flats with purple silks.

The blurb says "FLATS authentic in every way. Constructed over a round core for increased flexibility and lower tension, the RB FLATS are wound with a pure nickel flat wire, which is then polished to a high shine, resulting in a string that is both supple and comfortable to play. With the RB FLATS, Optima have created a flat wound bass string which echo’s the classic tones of yesteryear."

  4. Having read up how accurate these German made strings are to the flatwounds that were standard issue on 4000/4001 models in the 1960/70s, I bought a couple of sets. Unfortunately the tension is a bit too high for my knackered left hand (its definitely more tense than TI flats, which I previously used, and feels more like a 'standard' flatwound such as a Chrome or La Bella 45-105). The gauges are 45-57-77-100.

One set is brand new and unopened in the packet, the other has been on my bass for two days and the ends were trimmed for use on my Ric (note: on removing, some of the silk immediately fell off the tuner end of the G string, grrr, though its 100% usable). A Strings is the cheapest UK-based  retailer and sells at £47.99 per set. So how about £40 30 posted for the brand new set and £30 posted for the briefly used set?

  5. In general I have had good experiences with BD and I will continue to use them. I did have one major beef which was them mis-weighing a bass. I have a glass back and weight is important to me (even more so now, after busting 13 ribs plus shoulder/sternum/left hand in a horse accident in March). The bass I bought (a Ric) was heavier than advertised and I ended up having to sell on eBay for my usual loss. They do now weigh basses individually and I am prepared to give them the benefit of the doubt.
