1. seems like gollihur's is the way to go. and yes, i have already spoken with the violin shop down the road who said they will fit the bridge. as you say, its one thing being a bit handy but to get best sound and performance i reckon it needs a pro. as the existing bridge is a NOT great fit and is damaged i think i will purchase the gollihur bridge and get luthier to fit. thanks for info folks.
2. hey hey! my adventures with the upright are going well so far. as expected the set up is basically awful on the bass i bought and the bridge especially is giving me cause for concern. there seems to be a big chunk that has been chipped off between A and D string that whilst not immediately has any effect, i think it might be a good idea to replace. i dont think its fitted very well either as feet didnt look flush. have tried moving it around a bit. definite improvement on E string resonance with bridge higher up body but A string sounds awful (prob the string tho) and now action is too high to be comfortable. as a quick side question, how dodgy is it to make bridge adjustments by slacking off tension? i admit i did collapse it once by accident but everyone survived unscathed. is it ened of the world? ie if i wanted to sand down the bridge can i safely remove it? therefore... very keen on getting an adjustable bridge but they dont seem to exist in the uk unless for silly money, £120+ am planning to experiment with all styles so reckon adjustable is the way to go. have seen gollihur music has one for about 80 dollars delivered. does anyone know of a uk supplier that can beat that? (also anyone used one from gollihur, are they any good?) i have like a million other questions but am gonna spread them out by topic so people dont get tired of me....
3. most likely my roland cube 100 which i have checked and impedance is 1 M Ohms. so pretty sure i need a preamp.
4.
Well, any kind of preamp will help but you're right, the BP100 can be "challenging". I've used several preamps to good effect. DHA DI EQ, Art Tube MP, MXR80 (this works really well with my bass for some reason). Where are you based?
I'm in brum. Saw that DHA one and thought it looked reasonably priced. Is there any double bass specific features I need to look out for? There are numerous cheapy electric bass preamps but wonder what extras the upright needs. The fishman has a phase switch to kill feedback etc. What is necessary for upright and what is desirable?
5. My very first upright is arriving tonight, very excited. Got a very good deal on an newish solid top which my mate is picking up from the big smoke tonight. It is fitted with a fishman bp100 which I gather is a bit of a dog to get a decent sound from. The Internet seems to be unanimous in recommending a preamp with this pick up. Obviously the fishman pro eq looks like a good fit. Does (A) anyone have a pro eq they can flog to me? Notice one went earlier this week in marketplace, boo. Or (2) know of any reasonable alternatives I can look at? Don't want to spend the earth but am open to suggestion. I am extremely excited about getting this bass and will no doubt be hopping up and down like a puppy until this evening. By which point the crushing disappointment will hit when I realise all my skills mean nothing when tackling what amounts to a wardrobe with strings on it.
6. just seen a (possibly) 70s plywood bass for sale, made in Czech possibly Strunal. would this be a decent bass compared to a newer solid top? think i remember reading somewhere that older plywoods can be decent. i know the pros and cons of ply vs solid but just wondering if old ply might trump new solid?? seller looking for around £400. was expecting to pay more but if folks reckon it could be decent then im open to having a look.
7. Literally just over my budget limit but in essence this is the exact set up I am looking for (bar the bass being a little older). Not stringing you along (pun intended) but also feel it would be a cop out to but entire set up in one go, where's the fun in finding your own gear, getting the best price etc. Yes it would save 2 months + in research time but thats part of the fun ain't it?? In all seriousness, from my research this looks like a Billy bargain, good luck with the sale, sure someone less foolish than myself will bite your hand off!!
8. thanks very much all, your comments as ever are genuinely useful and reassuring. i think "thisnameistaken" summed it up very eloquently, It's a really rewarding instrument to learn, very satisfying to play, but don't dive into it expecting to reproduce your fretless bass repertoire immediately (or at all) - treat it as a different instrument and don't be despondent if it humbles you in the beginning. Take pleasure from the simple stuff at first and gradually build up your stamina and technique. that sounds to me like solid advice! think humbling might prove to be a pretty key issue. who doesnt like a challenge tho hey?! as and when i take the plunge i will no doubt be back to whinge and moan and ask you kindly folks for more pearls of wisdom. many thanks and i will let you know how i get on.
9. class myself as a fairly advanced player and have been gigging my fretless (homemade jaco tribute) for a couple of years now. almost certain now that im gonna buy a double bass in the very near future. that said, reading these threads has started getting me nervous. just how out of my depth can i expect to be? am i crazy to be thinking already how its going to sound in my band's set? obviously all the set up and technicalities are gonna be a steep learning curve but playability-wise, ie the crucial bit, just how out of my comfort zone am i likely to be? so far i am gathering that note spaces are much greater, thumb position is a much bigger deal, the instrument is much more "physical", expensive repairs if not careful with it, set up is key to playability. reassurance/advice would be much appreciated!! also decided this much about purchase, hybrid construction, secondhand, budget up to £800 depending on what kind of deal comes up on here/gumtree/fleabay. i do have a track record of starting instruments then moving on (please see my dusty piano/flamenco guitar/trombone for evidence) but bass has always been my number 1 and am loving the thought of having that acoustic tone on tap. bottom line, am i letting myself in for a world of pain?
10.
come on, eveyone needs one of these surely???
i do indeed need one but i think your price has scared people off, you can buy these new for £189 at GAK and less on ebay. consider a price drop?
11. ok, im fairly good with theory. play alot of bass and teach mates on an informal basis. unfortunately in a recent lesson, my logic was undermined and i ended up getting confused!! i admit i use patterns and theory kind of in conjunction and this is obviously the route of my confusion. we kno that a minor scale involves flattening the third and seventh. fine. unfortunately my "go to" minor fingering pattern also involves flattening the sixth. i had never seen it in this way before. after doing a bit of research i find that sixths and sevenths can be variably flattened or natural in minor scales, whats the deal with this?? are there different rules for different keys or what? i was under the impression that the minor scale had a fixed set of intervals that made it minor in the same way the major scale has its fixed intervals that makes it major. im disappointed that my long held beliefs have been shaken!!! anyone shed any light??
12.
Think it's the 4-String version of mine. Likey So.
its very similar except it has a jazz pickup in front of the MM, hench basic "JM". and yes its 4 string. also scratch plate is flat white, not pearloid.
13. how could you!! i thought she looked tired when i got home. she wasnt singing as loud for me as she usually does. her bottom end was flabby as well. gonna hav serious words with her. might even slap her around..........
14. cud get some pics but as i say, its a feeler at this stage. just wanna guage interest as its a spur of the moment decision. apologies, i know its lame. bear with me. and someone else must understand this bass promiscuity. as much as i love my bass, i need to feel the touch of another!!!!!!! c'mon, u kno wat im talking about, monogamy is great an all but man does buckle to temptation once in a while!!!!!
15.
I've got a no-name P that I'll swap... seeing as it's not about the money.
good point. excuse me whilst i wipe the egg from my face. no name p basses will not be considered.
16. hmmmmmmmmm, its all gone a little quiet. why cant we get a bass "swap shop" going on???, its all too much about the money these days. if someone offers me £800 in the next 2 days i will seriously consider. really want funkle's lakland 44.02. that is goin on ebay on sunday and a trade is a non starter. PM me boys and girls.
17. just to confirm, the sandberg is blue with the wood grain showing thru. semi circular scratch plate in white. definitely not too flashy a finish, doesnt look all boutique coffee table-ish. very very cool look tho. supposed to be an homage to the stingray really, sounds very different tho. versatile tones from fender jazz to funk machine slap monster. i really love it!!! has been my only gigging bass since purchase and has dealt with any and all styles. paid around £1000. condition = 9.5/10
18. just out of interest, i like to keep things fresh and have had this beauty for 2 years or so, fancy a change. cant afford a new bass so hows about a trade??? sandberg jm basic 4 string with custom 3 band eq and coil splitter switch. the 3 band was added at extra cost and makes the bass truly versatile. well gigged but looked after, very very minor cosmetic dings but seriously nothing major. its a beauty but i fancy a change. lookin for similar spec'd instrument, active 4 string etc. for a straight swap. would consider paying a little extra on top for something very special/exciting. not sure what to expect so surprise me! apologies for lack of photos but this is just a spur of the moment idea whilst slacking at the office!!!!
19. this is posted again for the 3rd time! had 2 deals fall thru. same deal: after an over eager purchase of the bass cube 100 i am looking for a trade for the cube 30. the 100 is obviously a far more serious prospect than the 30, it has a real quality phatness of tone and unparalleled levels of tone shaping. fantastic small amp that would easily cope with many gig situations even big venues with use of the DI out. no problem getting over a drummer on its own with a wicked variety of tones and effects. unfortunately i need an aux input for looping which only the 30 has!! this is honestly the only reason i want the trade. i loop a lot during practise which is now not possible. i was previously offered by someone on bass chat a trade plus 100 quid. i think this is fair, for 100 beans u get a far superior amp with serious tone and performance. the 100 is in mint condition, minor dent in the back where the plug was knocked in transit, purely cosmetic. i am based in birmingham but would consider postage, might get confusing with 2 amps switching location tho. anyone intersted??
20. owen electronics bass gremlin unbelievable bass overdrive pedal, if u have ever tried a pedal that says it does "bass overdrive" u kno its rubbish and thin and nasty. this pedal is crazy good. loads of tone shaping with 2 different filter types, wet/dry mix, output level (for solo moments) AND 2 overdrive outputs AND a separate clean output for bi-amping lovers (u kno who u are). this is easily the best bass overdrive i hav ever tried, and there have been a few, there are so many diferent sounds u cant fail to find something u like. it really does give a warm, valve, overdrive sound. quite ampeg-y but so much tweaking is possible u can go for mild crunch (which literally nothing else available does without sacrificing the low end) right the way thru to full on rock distortion. really really versatile. just had a pot replaced by mr. owen himself who gave it a full look over so needless to say it is in absolute fantastic nick, brand spanking condition easy. no problems operationally at all. for any backgorund see http://www.owenelectronics.co.uk/9939.html its british built and only available new via their mail order. great customer service (ie. for snapped pot replacement) and an amazing pedal. 126 quid new (altho out of stock on web site) absolutely loath to sell this pedal but needs must im afraid. kinda talked myself out of selling now so i was thinkin 85 quid? any takers?
21. after an over eager purchase of the bass cube 100 i am looking for a trade for the cube 30. the 100 is obviously a far more serious prospect than the 30, it has a real quality phatness of tone and unparalleled levels of tone shaping. fantastic small amp that would easily cope with many gig situations with the DI for larger venues and no problem getting over a drummeron its own. unfortunately i need an aux input for looping which only the 30 has!! i was previously offered by someone on bass chat a trade plus 100 quid. i think this is fair, for 100 beans u get a far superior amp with serious tone and performance. the 100 is in mint condition, minor dent in the back where the plug was knocked in transit, purely cosmetic. i am based in birmingham but would consider postage, might get confusing with 2 amps switching location tho. anyone intersted??
22. would anyone know where i could get hold of the circuit diagram for the roland 100? iv googled but the closest i cud get was the old bass 60. not saying im gonna go hacking in to the amp but it would be worth a look at at just in case.
