Drop your d-tuner, kick on all your fx, and feed back horribly at a very low note whilst running in circles holding your bass aloft by the body.
i take it you belive a bassist should not have his turn to do his bit at a gig then?
 2.
this is an obvious exception, re: my earlier post.
all due respect i dont think there are any exeptions, music is music and the punter has the choice to stay or go, and unless a guy is going mad on his bass, i think the odd flash bass part is as good as the 22 guitar solos in a gig!!
 3.
I don't think you can compare a drum solo (even Buddy Rich at his peak) with the stuff that Steve Lawson does, as an extreme example, and the bass can play tunes... Solo works for cello can be very moving.
Have you ever seen level 42 live? at the end of a gig the crowd beg for his flashy bass solos, and tell me, is it him being flash, or him giving the crowd what they want? to see a master play his instrument! even if he is flash, who cares, its great!! I think its not what is played, but the intention and energy that the guy playing is delivering his bit, and people can sense if your being flash, or doing it to entertain. People in my experiance do care, and appriciate good playing, and when you see everyone having a great time, we are doing our job. Thats the way i see it.
 4. see mate, a passionate debate we started here!! I say do it! (but im lucky as its up to me what i do at a gig) www.bsharpduo.co.uk Anyway im gonna put a little drum trck together gig it at the weekend, with some flash bass, and let you all know what the hell happens!! haha
 5.
Good point. I guess some people don't gig or even get to a rehearsal studio very often. There is no real substitute for the thump in the chest/guts/ears you get from playing a bass loud. Hum that tangent needs its own thread (I'll start it) - how do you show civilians the true potential of the bass without appearing to be a flash twonk? Depends on your band or other public performance opportunities. I have a favourite example from an unexpected source: Steeleye Span live version of Blackleg Miner from the "Present" CD with Rick Kemp slapping and popping his slightly flanged Overwater .. - Now That's What I Can Folk. We'd play it in my band if it wasn't so overtly political. I'm looking for a similar opportunity that will still work at a wedding Listen here http://www.last.fm/music/Steeleye+Span/_/Blackleg+Miner
Wicked sounds great!! haha weddings military we do them too, Just a duo mind, me and a girl, so its a bit of an odd ball set up backing tracks, girl vox, bass and 3k rig! but on the right night and crowd, they dance and wildly (id like to think that the funky bass lines i do underneth it all has something to do with it, even if they dont know it!)! well we can say what the hell, i have been playing x amount of years and this is what i can do, so like it or lump it im, gonna do my flash bit then play brown eyed girl after!! ha ha
 6.
So what do you see? Do people come in time and again to play the same licks on a Saturday?
to be honest i have not been there that long, and i dont work on saturday as i gig and stuff, but i guess im open minded about that sort of thing and dont really think or know if its there fav lick! But i was thinking, how many of us get to do what we want in a covers band loud? Could it be that its a chance to have a good blst with good gear without the neighbours shouting?? I remember years ago, i did play my best licks in shops, but for me it was to gain confidence in doing tech stuff in a public place, as i am really quite shy as a person. But its funny cos i was thinking that i may put together a 2 min backing track to do some flashy stuff live at the start of the 2nd set. Thats cos i feel that the bass has so much to offer in terms of an instument, and it may open the minds more to others out there to just how wonderful a bass reaally is, but where does that sit on this debate?? www.bsharpduo.co.uk
 7.
+1 for Jerry. Got to see them in Blackpool not so long a go, thanks to a friend of mine who knows Jim Horn and invited me a long. Best of all, we got invited to the party afterwards. Really surreal, chatting with James Burton and the TCB members. You know you are in the presence of real stars when they behave so normal and have a complete absence of ego. And darn it, they have every right to have one!
Oh man how cool! well i got to shake Jerrys hand at Hamersmith, that was cool. I guess he was my influence, and the lines he played were so new in live playing, both on record and in the studio. Try to check out polk sallad annie, the fast live version. The bass and drums are incredible, even by todays standard, and the distortion bass solo by jerry is just so full of energy, all blues bassed, but fast and cool! Hes still doing it today! Also Jaco, and the guy from chic, all really cool bassists. We do Chic stuff in the duo (my choice) and they are bouncy fun basslines. www.bsharpduo.co.uk
 8. the jazz should sound great, are your strings newish? also speaker size 10s are good, and the tech that u use, and a compressor and a good fx unit can help. I have a levinson 5 string, it has a great vintage slap tone.
 9.
Ask some shop staff.
i work in the bass merchant p/t ! but its just my veiw.
 10.
Some people only ever play in shops .. They also have a few lines they have learned just to play in shops 'cos that's the only "performance" they ever do.
Really? well i suppose if it gives pleasure to people who do that, why not. Its just music (and egos)
 11.
I've never felt this, because I don't play the bass to show off or impress anyone. I play because I enjoy it. If I'm trying out a bass in a shop, it's to see if it's right for me and my style of playing - if anyone's listening and has an opinion it's theirs and doesn't concern me in any way. And I'm a naturally shy person, so it's nothing to do with confidence. Seriously, you have to go in with the approach that you're testing a product to see if it is what you're looking for. If you see someone else in the shop, loudly ripping through some flash slap and tap licks, blatantly showing off, then ignore them and comfort yourself in the fact that they've probably got confidence issues, hence their need to show off in public. That said, the home trial policy is probably a far better way of doing it - you can try a bass through your own amp (or vice versa) and spend more time giving it a proper work out.
BUt why is it showing off to do funky slapping in a shop? just yesterday i was slapping my purchase (levinson blade 5 string) and slap is a style i use alot live, and so needs to be played on the possible purchase, dont you think? I guess anyone can be deemed as showing off, but the guy behind the bass only know s the truth in what they are trying to project, or not as the case may be! Anyway i say live and let live as they say if you've got it flaunt it! ha ha
 12. Jerry Scheff is mine, fab player, check out the elvis 70s concerts. The band TCB band still work, and still as hot as they were in the 70's.
 13.
I believe his name was 'Grant' and he may have been Canadian...
I know who you mean, i think his name was Chris maybe, and he owned it. It used to be great in wapping, and the guys really cool. I remember they gave me a free t shirt (elites) and a set of bass strings every time i went in. Was great, and the had in house repairs and upgrades. Its a shame to see it go, but it went when it moved from wapping, in my opinion. I think the owner made enough cash and just sold it.
 14. Changed it to the 5 string in white. Very pretty bass. www.bsharpduo.co.uk
 15.
What a surprise, I phoned them today to enquire about a Markbass F1 head, I really wanted to try one. Now they only do internet and telephone sales from a warehouse opposite where they had their shop. So now the only bass shop is the Gallery.
HI give bass merchat a call they have mark bass gear in stock, i know i work there!!
 16.
Ouch.
yeah i know, thats where i got this one from, im open to offers, but i dont think they are available anymore from anywhere but ebay, and they are the hofners. It is a great bass, sounds great, but its not my cup of T. If it sells cool, if not, its still cool to have, so not really fussed.
 17.
Mike; why didn't you get Mike to build your basses?
I had a zoot bass for a while, which was nice, but not for me, im more of a traditional bass man, you know fenders and stuff, and i like a passive bass as oppsoed to actives. Although the levinson has a pull active boost, but it has a simply awsom passive tone, and just plays like a dream. I had a zoot 5 string boudica bass, was lovely, but to middy for me. I would like to get one day (or year) the funkmister 5 he makes, they are wonderful to look at and sound great, but 2k, is better spent on the morgage than a bass at this moment in time!!
 18.
Nice parrot!
ha ha hes called rex, the african grey!
 19. For sale stienberger sprit bass, 4 string, black, great sound and condition, with gig bag and new set of strings, £200 can email photos, plaease call 07957300029, can post, i live in essex.
 20. Hello all, im new here, the names rich, from essex! i have been playing about 25 years, and work p/t at the bass merchant , and have a little duo www.bsharpduo.co.uk Any way i have two bases a steinberger sprit, which sounds great but give me a sever cramp in the left shoulder when playing it live, (any idea why? ) im not tall 5 6 and the strech to the f is a long way away, unyet when playing my 6 with a huge wide neck, i had no problems. I have just bought a levinson b1 tetra standerd. Oh my god, i have owend about 30 basses in my time, and have to say that this blows them all away! even the posh hand made jobs (imop) I urge anyone looking for a jazz type bass to try one of these, they are simply the best for playability sound, and the quality and action is darn near perfect as they come. At the bass merchant he has a cool white five string, that i just could not stretch to, £599 but the 4 string i have is fast and has the best slap sound. I have to take my hat off to levinson to come up with a bass under £500 which is just so so sweet! well done!!
 21. well loved 6 string bass. It is made by indie, and retails for £630 and it takes about 6 weeks to order one. Please see their site. Ok The bass is solid swamp ash, and the neck i belive is hard maple, with a rosewood fingerboard and perl inlays. I have to say that although i have done many gigs with it, it remains in perfect condition, both front and back, and of course being solid wood (not veneer) it is extreamly hard wearing. The Neck has a super slim profile, and is very fast, and the frets are all as new, although this bass is well played in, and the fretboard feels great under the fingers. The neck has a duel truss rod system, so you can be sure that it is solid, and it stays in tune for weeks! This is my main gigging bass, but i guess i just fancy a change! I have also has a 2 band aguiler 18 volt preamp fitted by mike walsh (zoot bass) and it sounds great. The sound is like a modern jazz, warm, punchy and is great for all styles, even slap. The string spacing is similar to a jazz, so for a 6er, it can be slapped with not too much agro from the b and c string! The bass has not been cut to have the preamp fitted as all the new wire, preamp and and batterys went into the exiisting cavity. It will last you a year before you need to replace the batterys. The bass also comes with Ritter gig bag and good strap. The strings are dead (i have not changed them in a year as the music i play live is soul and funk ) www.bsharpduo.co.uk but i have ordered a new set that i will throw in as well! All in all this is a great gigging bass, or to have at home, it looks great on the stand. This bass was by no means stuck in the corner at home, if fact it gigs about twice a week, and has remained exellent, reliable and looks pretty on all the stages! whoever gets this will be very happy! I cant upload photos as the site will not allow, but i am happy to email them. £375. contact via www.bsharpduo.co.uk (numbers and email addy.)
