Went to spec out the venue today in the [b][i]pouring[/i][/b] rain. The event organiser suggested we played in the middle of a field with no stage, on grass, no backdrop, away from the main area where everything else was happening. We politely declined, and asked to look at the big barn. Much better - under cover, adequate number of power sockets, can set up in a corner, hard surface underfoot, easy access for gear lugging. So, we said we'd play in the barn but not outside. Agreed, said organiser. Phew. Just need to constantly remind the guitarist and singer that it's a family fun-day for charity, so no snarling or swearing. I've bought 4 inflatable guitars off ebay so that kids can play air-guitar with us if they want. That'll completely spook both guitarists. Should be a good event after the noisy pub gig the night before.

Stage is a trailer so another challenge there. [/quote] 6KW PA system - blimey. I'll put myself through our PA system (which has bass bins) for our outdoor gig, and use the Compact as a monitor. We did a trailer gig last year. There was plenty of room, but the "stage" was fairly deep with solid sides. Standing at the back, I could just about see straight ahead, but nothing to the sides - bit like looking out through a tunnel. I was quite a way back from the singers and their monitors, so I was glad of my own monitor.

Hi folks, Got an outdoor charity gig coming up. My rig: Fender MIJ P (or possibly USA G&L L2000) through Gallien Krueger MB500 + Barefaced Compact, no pedals or effects at all. Band: fairly noisy 6-piece pub-rock band, 2 guitars, heavy-handed drummer Site: Outside, in open-air, not in a marquee, on hard surface, not on any sort of stage Audience: Unsure of numbers - probably between 100 and 200 Will I be loud enough? Our guitarist loses interest very quickly unless he's playing rock solos. That's when I start to lose interest. I'm much more oriented towards crowd-pleasing groove dance music. I'm with Happy Jack on this one. I reckon you'll need a bit of a band meeting about this, otherwise you'll all end up disagreeing about what you as a band are aiming to play. If you decide that you want to see people dance, then you'll need to be playing songs they can dance to and they recognise. Nothing wrong at all in playing "cheesy" songs (you suggest Blockbuster...) if the band and the audience enjoy them. Personally speaking, I'd far rather see people having a good time to Long Train Runnin than decide to go to the loo because you're playing a guitar-solo-heavy hunk of out-there axe-heavy rock. But that's just me. So, don't be afraid to embrace "cheesiness". If you make an effort and play these songs really well, that will set you apart from a lot of other bands. I remember playing a pub gig and going to the loo in the break. In the gents a guy said that he thought the band was really good because "they played Go your own way really well". He hadn't realised I was the bassist. Loads of groove-based dance songs out there. Choose the ones that most people will know, play them well and enjoy people enjoying your performance. To me, that's a good night out.

Update: I went to the audition last night. From the band's setlist, I had 11 songs prepared, 4 of which I'd learned from scratch. It turned out that it was only the second time that the band in its current line up had played together. The setlist I'd been sent related to the previous band's line-up, was way out of date and was going to be completely changed anyway. We ran through 6 of the songs and it was all pretty rough and ready, unsurprisingly. The band definitely has the potential to be a decent pub/club band. I'm not convinced about corporate functions and weddings, but who knows. I left because they were due to see another bassist, with 4 more being seen in 3 days time. I don't think the band had painted a true picture of the current situation. Actually, I wouldn't have been put off by knowing that they'd only just got together. I needn't have prepared so many songs. Don't mind if I get asked to join. Don't mind if I don't. Steve
