1.
Nothing wrong with that is there? I live for the gig too, but I have to play and write and record and whatever, there is no way I could turn that compulsion off. If I didn't have to gig and wasn't in bands, I'd probably start learning piano and drums in earnest and the bass and guitar would be tools rather than first love. The music is what counts, not the instrument.
Well said! I've said before that i love music, not just a specific instrument or genre. Piano and drums are on my list of things to learn, bass is my first instrument, and carries a lot of weight for me, but it gets pretty lonely outside of a band situation. I'm pretty happy that i can play guitar now for when i'm not involved in anything where i'm playing bass.
 2.
S'all the blackeye peas I've been eating
Ah good, the less i see of WILLIAM the better.
 3.
Sounds like a band that comprises of bassists that sit in armchairs (& possibly with foot stools) in front of the audience.
That's the best kind. And we shall regale the audience with out whimsical stories. It will be the best club that ever existed.
 4.
I was going to say this!!! Nige, you do not look anywhere near 50 from what you've posted up of your gigs with Kit.... blimey, I thought you were about my age. Maybe this is conclusive proof that healthy living, the love of a good partner and regular gigging with bands you love are the secret to staying youthful..... I have 2 of the 3..... I live in hope to start turning the clock back on my appearance
Yes, Nigel, you look very youthful in your avatar. Couldn't say the same for your previous one though.
 5.
I also read it as Lazytits!
We should start a club!
 6.
A few reasons. The main two being I don't feel I'm very good by any standards and I havent found a band that I've really felt like things "clicked".
You'll only get better in a band mate. Bass is pretty pointless and can be boring outside of a band.
 7.
I think Milty has an illness or condition that may impede him from playing in a band. Sure he'll clarify, though.
Nah, lazyitis, or lazytits, as i'm now calling it after reading it wrong
 8.
You mean lazyitis?
...yes
 9.
In fairness to some (and by some, I mean a select very few), the "tab" sites are quite often guff & often the one guy does a bad transcription & then folk share it on other sites. Some folk can't transcribe by ear. Doesn't necessarily make them a poor bassist though. Try finding the bass tab for Jamiroquai's Planet Home. I worked it out by ear & thought I'd check it against some "tabs", but there's sod all that's correct! I think if you really want to know a song, buy the actual transcription from a publisher.
I agree, and you aren't wrong, but so many of the songs i see are well tabbed if you take the time to find the right version. Loads of crap, but there are good ones. Sometimes you have to forgive the lack of timing in tabs. Most tabs i use, i just get the general idea, then fit it in to the song, but i know some people would play it like it was written on the tab.
 10.
I certainly find if I can work the song out by ear, I feel more confident... I'll often go to a reputable tab site to "check my workings out" or to figure out harder bits that are eluding me, but certainly I favour learning by ear, it also gets you to appreciate the bass in amongst the song as a whole.... Which if you are going to play with a band is invaluable. I do sometimes when I get REALLY stuck, go to my guru bass teacher for some gentle nudges in the right direction
Of course you do, that's what you pay him for! I just don't see why so many people turn to YouTubers to provide them with tablature.
 11.
I like a lot of them may be young teens who don't think to learn songs by ear or even watch and learn
What? I was 17 when i started and nobody told me to watch and learn.
 12.
Like Justin Bieber.
He just had his brain removed at birth.
 13.
I'm drowning in notifications - millions of the buggers. I keep pestering them to fix it...
That's exactly why i don't mind not getting them
 14.
Fair point with the more well known songs, but some bands just aren't on there. There's about five or six Stone Roses bass tabs on the various sites, and some people's tabs aren't available at all like David Bowie. I wonder why that is? He's pretty popular
yeah, some artists have their tabs removed, for some reason.
 15. I've never had an email from BassChat. And i don't mind tbh.
 16.
Maybe they can't be arsed working it out by ear? Maybe they just don't have the skill to listen to a song and figure the part out, or the desire/ time to learn how to?
Maybe so, and that's why God invented Ultimate-Guitar.com.
 17.
Remember the days of MXtabs and the Rush tab project? You could get tabs for bloody everything it seemed. Though it was often just as quick (and more beneficial in the long term) just to work by ear. I haven't looked at tabs in years.
I've stumbled on a lot of the songs i have learned recently.
 18. I don't gig because i can't. I've had offers, but i've had to turn them down For the same reason why i don't drive, or work, or do much at all really.
 19.
It seems there are some people who can't even see how it's possible to learn a song without tabs! It's the internet and as such we're exposed to the comments and opinions of all sorts. Most of them won't be playing for long.
Hopefully a few of them have lots of lovely gear that they will get rid of for next to nothing If anyone ever said to me "I couldn't learn a song without tabs" i would probably have to smash the instrument across their head The entire genre of rock is based entirely upon musical ignorance, but that's taking it to an entire new level.
 20. Go on any YouTube bass cover of a popular song, scroll down to the comments, and see essentially this comment 100 times. Why? I just don't get it. And here's why i don't get it. The person in the video probably either worked out the song by ear, or used somebody else's tabs to learn and record the song. I doubt very much that many people write out tabs for songs so they can do a cover of it on YouTube. Secondly - You have a video right in front of you of the person playing it. That's already increasing your ability to work it out yourself, because you can actually see the notes he/she is playing. I've done this countless times when i couldn't work it out by ear. Thirdly - The internet has thousands of tabs and tab sites. In my opinion, you aren't making use of the internet and your computer if you are trying to get all your information from YouTube. I certainly wouldn't pay for my internet if i was only going to make use of a few sites. I just don't understand this at all. If you can't find a place on the internet that has tabs for a particular song (keeping in mind, we are talking about popular songs) and you can't work it out by ear, even with the video and song in front of you showing you how it's played, there probably isn't much hope for you (not literally you. I doubt many people on here write this comment on YouTube.) I see the comment on nearly every cover video i watch, and i felt the need for a bit of a rant on it. There are tab books, free tabs online, covers, and even people teaching how to play the song in other videos, why feel the need to ask on a cover video? [/rant]
 21.
Funnily enough that`s what the floor of an Avenger was made of. True
I should have read the rest of the thread before replying
 22.
Drives like butter
I must get me one of these butter cars that everyone is talking about.
 23. I had a few of those fake PM's. Very annoying. I think 10 PM's in a day loads. Who starts more than 10 new topics in a day?
 24.
So 107 is considered 'light' nowadays?
I find D'Addario tend to be a bit silly. A regular gauge set (45-105/107) they will call regular light, and long scale for 32" scale basses. they call 30" scale short scale. In the world of guitar, a set of 9's are called super light gauge, but where do you go from there? You can get 8's, so are they called super super light gauge? Fantastic strings, but their naming of sets based on the scale and gauge is mad i find.
 25.
Lol I still hate.... Sorry dislike them, this coming from an Irish man too But yes your right farmers weekly is the place for that kind of chit chat
Sames
