1.
Some very good deals on Saab estates at the moment. I've just got one in anticipation for the extra space for my own gear and the main PA. Very pleased. One thing I don't like between estates and hatchbacks though is that estates generally have that sliding roller blind thingy as a parcel shelf! Don't like it !!!
You can get ones that fold up instead of slid in like a roller.
 2.
No it wasn't a rally car (it didn't have a roll cage etc) but yes it did have rally car type windows.
Odd that it was being reshelled then, is it not?
 3.
You might be better to get an external soundcard with multiple inputs which usually include a free daw. If you dont have one already. Dont get tied down to which daw is best either. Familiarity with the software is key and most of the home studio daws all do the same thing.
I already have an external soundcard and garageband.
 4.
you should have a click track you can use that will help . Also If you write down a rough structure of the intended song..... intro 4bars / verse 1- 4bars / chorus/ V2 .....it will give you something to refer to when your head gets stewed. The lenght of each dependant on lyrics/ grooves etc I struggled with drums until I loaded drumcore3 free , it was the only intuitive thing I have found with this recording malarkey . Its a big download but is reeeeealllyy easy to use . Anyway , Hark at me offering advice on this topic .
Cheers, i'm not sure if i'll write lyrics, because i'm not really singer, but i might do some background vocals for texture. Maybe one song with lyrics and a guest singer maybe. I'm downloading Logic Pro 9 soon, which i think has a drum created thingy on it (it bloody better at £140!).
 5.
I don't get this at all. You wouldn't presume to comment on what gear the drummer or guitard are using, so why people think it's acceptable to make a decision about what instrument a bass player uses (when they know nothing about bass playing) is beyond me.
I wouldn't like to be in a band with a guitarist that has one of those pointy BC Rich's. To me, that's making a fairly firm statement about what image you like. Let's face it, somebody who likes a pointy guitar isn't really going to want to play nice slow melodic pieces. Although, having said that, i know there is a sh*t storm coming now.
 6.
If you've got a rock/pop bassline & want to lay drums down next, pop a snare on the 2 & 4 and a kick just on the 1. Then mess about with the kick between the snares to suit your bassline. Then work on your cymbals (then toms & any other percussion if wanted). Once you get the other instruments in, you can always rip out the drums or change them.
It's not particularly poppy or rocky. I'm not sure a straight 2&4 snare would do it.
 7.
Radbourne Racing on the main street through Wimbledon!!! Blast from the past - that's where I used to get my spares! Not sure what you mean by the front windows having sliding inserts - mine were ordinary bronze tinted glass with manual winders! CB
Given that it had the sliding windows, and was getting reshelled, would it not be safe to assume it was actually a rally car?
 8.
You can only start with what you've got. Always best to get a basic drum loop going which basically fits the idea first.
That's what i was thinking, but i also would have no idea where to start creating a drum loop. I'll maybe just record the bass track first and see how that goes. Cheers.
 9. Cheers guys. So i mainly have the bass parts in my head and not much else right now, so i should just go on ahead and record that first and let drums and guitar fall in around it? Actually having the bass track to listen might actually help me come up with a solid guitar part and drum part, so it makes sense really. Cheers!
 10. Don't think i can make it either, unless the NHS speed me along in the next few weeks.
 11.
Here we go. Found it!... CB
I learned to drive in a renault 5 (slightly newer one than that, not a turbo model) when i was 14. My dad had bought it for £100, and when we moved to a house with a yard, he showed me how to drive and let me drive around the yard. That was pretty good, because when it came to doing my test, i only had to do a few lessons to learn the rules and stuff, and then i got my licence, and i actually consider myself quite a good driver. In fact, in the bad weather here 2 years ago, i was the only one in the family (my dad having been a professional driver and also mechanic, car builder and hobbyist racing/rally driver for many years) that could actually drive the family car into the yard without getting it stuck and having to dig it out.
 12.
I'd mentioned earlier in the thread that I drove a road-going version of the group-B rally car (the mid-engined Renault 5 Turbo2) as my everyday transport in the late 80s. You probably think I'm making this up - but you'll definitely think it's too much of a coincidence if I told you that at that time I also owned a Lada Niva! The Lada was built like a tank. But that was its only plus point. The electrics were an absolute joke. If only one bulb blew in a journey - that was a good day! The driver's seat rail screws came loose one day and the seat actually came adrift whilst I was driving. Additionally the paint on the seams between the body panels was actually cracked on delivery from brand new. Hideous machine that only made me smile when a random man knocked on my door one day and offered me £600 less than I'd paid for it - after two and a half years ownership. By the way - if you don't believe all this, I think I should be able to find a photo from that era if it's of any interest. CB
Why would i not believe it? lol. My dad is a full time rally car builder. There is currently an old Hillman Avenger (ex-rally car) in the yard which he intends to make into our daily driver. He also rallied a Lada when back when i was just a baby. He's said about Lada's that they are good at what they are designed for, and the Niva was pretty excellent as far as off roading it goes. TBH, i would be surprised if it wasn't coming from a country like Russia. I would really only want one for winter driving and off roading, there's no real appeal in it to drive it every day under normal circumstances. I just love all manner of cars!
 13.
I had a Lada Niva in council orange many years ago. Whike it was great fun, and excellent off road it most certainly wasn't reliable! I got very good value from my AA membership while I had it....
Really? it's the first i ever heard of a lads being unreliable. What went wrong? was it something re-occurring?
 14. And now i want a lada niva! f***
 15.
What about Fords new pick up 4x4 which looks pretty sh*t hot. ? Get it with the truck cab on back and you can do house removals in spare time. A proper off-roader too when it snows or gigs in the Outbacks of Scotland - LOL 2nd hand Ford Explorer Large Chevy Blazer type 4x4 ? don't know the model Unimog - Bedford TK fully refurbished at circa £6k - huge load space and 4x4. I've always found the German cars a bit plain inside and recently not as reliable as they claim to be. I've had 3 Mini Coopers incl current S which have had several electrical faults incl CPU, solenoids, elec windows, faulty connector plugs, burned-out elec steering pump, and my Merc CLS which was great to drive and 0-60 in 6.7 secs was a monster car and loved it but regular trouble with tracking and going thru rear tyres in 9mths circa 10k miles costing £250 a piece wasn't so great. BMW's had same issues with elec faults and general niggly faults. Don't really get that with the JAP 4x4's these days. Maybe worth considering that Germans aint what they used to be in the reliabilty stakes. Dave Dave
If you want out and out reliability in a 4x4, there's really only one answer... Lada Niva. But i doubt that CB is after a 40 year old, russian engineered, petrol mini off roader. They are pretty cheap though.
 16.
Rocksmith surely ;-P I'm level 7, been playing the bass about 6 months and Rocksmith 1 week. It's a very accurate reflection on skill
see my rocksmith thread
 17.
How do I find out my bass skill level?
I'm sure there is a page on Facebook which could tell you, all you have to do is fill out 15 surveys. (then wait for the phone to ring... and no, it won't be a call you want). As for learning new songs, i have no idea. What you call a 6, i might call a 4, or an 8. I wouldn't call myself a 6, so i couldn't possibly try and help you progress (mainly because you are likely to be miles better than me).
 18. So i've decided to record an EP. 5 tracks i'm thinking. I have a couple of song ideas floating around my head, but i was just interested to know how people normally start recording something like this? I don't think it will have vocals, so scratch vocals isn't really an option. Do you guys start with creating a drum track, them bass, then guitar and everything else after that, or create scratch tracks of bass or something else first? I was thinking a drum track to start, then i can play bass and guitar to that. But what do you, more experienced recording people think i should do?
 19.
They did. I believe one of the first recorded incidents was in Ballyholme, Northern Ireland where I grew up. I was going to work one day, and never having heard of such an incident, got a hell of a laugh from seeing the hole in the bank, seeing the digger nearby and putting 2 and 2 together. :-) The thieves were caught scratching their heads, sitting around the unopened ATM, in the middle of a field 5 miles away. Professionals :-) CB
Oh right, haha! i can imagine that they had a good plan for actually stealing the ATM, but hadn't thought enough beyond that. Standing in the middle of a field like, c'mon, you're in plain view of anybody!
 20.
The A6 Avant fits an ATM quite nicely in the back A friend of mine had his stolen a while ago, one of the big diesels. The guy who took it was part of a gang who were into stealing entire ATMs... Save faffing at the scene and just crack them later. The Avant is ideal because it's fast and handles better than a transit van
There was a lot of that going on around here for a short while. They would generally steal a big digger from a nearby construction site, haul the ATM out of it's mountings (most ATMs here are completely cased in in their own little brick shelter), throw it on the back of a lorry or flatbed transit, and take it to a shed somewhere nearby. Don't know if they ever actually caught anyone for it.
 21.
VW Sharan - 1.9TDi. Drummer with kit, me with flightcased 2x15 and amps etc + friend. 50 mpg easy. A Sharan is a phenomenal vehicle for gigging. The removable rear seats are the thing to go for.
YES! remarkable vehicles.
 22. Haven't read the entire thread, so forgive me if this has already been mentioned- Ford Galaxy/VW Sharan/Seat Alhambra. All the same car, fantastic drivers, and tons of space. Ok, it won't win awards for looks or speed (although ours is only a 90HP one, and copes alright), but in terms of practicality (unless you live in a city centre) it ticks nearly all the boxes. Surprisingly, they are remarkable fun to drive. I drive my mums one like a bit of a looney, and it just keeps going! I think the VW Touran might be pretty similar though, but the galaxys/sharans might be worth a look too. ours has 180,000+ miles (mostly country roads) and still going strong.
 23.
Lol, yes a reasonable observation. I would however point out that anyone from the lady Gaga era has a bit of a cheek criticising Rick Astley
wow wow wow! I only like 3 of her songs
 24.
Well basschat don't like the n word then.
haha! are you really that surprised?
