Don't mind his music to be honest, though I kind of pity him because he's destined to be another record company puppet. Anyway - there's a BBC video of him playing live, and his bass player has a rather nice Musicman.... I read it wrong, but if you offer is crazy low, then it has the same fascist tendency as a particularly high offer. Hey, it's just what the graph says -
Ah, but he would have considered it a compliment! Also, not read the whole thread, but while some buyers make very low offers, some sellers try it on by knowingly asking ridiculously high prices (perhaps not on BC, but in the wider world).
NOOO! i was deliberately NOT responding to that This is just going to turn into a thread about how Hitler lowballed the jews! -

C'mon guys, let it die! 13 pages, i think every point of view has been covered, obviously too many people disagree. Don't make me have to call somebody a Nazi again! -
Quick update, cast has been removed to reveal this £750 worth of titanium and the screws go almost all the way through the whole arm bone! Although it looks like the forearm that is broken which would heal over time leaving the wrist as normal the plate is actually there to reinforce the piece of bone that came away where the hand meets the arm and will be with me forever. The little pock marks on my hand all small round burns where the power passed to earth! they look to be healing up now though As you can imagine I cant move it enough to play bass yet and the long term diagnosis is uncertain, I have purchased an electric upright as I feel I will be able to play that easier as its the twisting round the neck thats the main issue, only problem is I have never played an upright before Be careful folks, this could ruin my main hobby.
Ouch! i don't mean to scare you, but my mates dad fell ice-skating about 5 years ago. Had to get the whole titanium screw thing in his hip. I do believe he is still in pain, although he can get through the working day alright. But even after a couple of years, i think he was still on some pretty strong painkillers. Hopefully your wrist will heal up nicely though! still looks a bit swollen there, so take it easy. Worst thing you could do at the minute is overdo it. -
That one always makes me laugh. If I'm feeling brave enough I normally point out that seeing as sober people don't need to start sentences with "i'm not drunk, honest, but..." people who aren't racists don't need to start sentences with things like "I'm not racist, but..." either. The other variant you hear on it is "$insert bigoted comment here$ ... but I guess its not PC to say that anymore".
HAHA! indeed. No point saying something if you think you will have to apologise for it directly before or after you have said it, you might as well not say it! -
IIRC the ATK's have a neck shape similar to a P bass. P basses and stingrays are generally more round, "fatter" necks Jazzes and sterlings are generally flatter, "thinner" necks Warwicks actually come in a variety on neck profiles
ah right. I thought maybe warwick did a whole range of neck profiles... seems like the thing they would do. Must try out a sterling. The guy that owned that warwick had a 72 jazz bass, and recommended a sterling over a stingray. I also like the look of the classic sterling, and with the back mounted pots, looks like the stingray i would build myself.
If I have to respect the opinion that a low ball offer is offensive, don't I also have to respect the opinion of the low-ball-offerer? So his offer is both to be respected, and offensive?
We need Rowan Atkinson to show us how that would look with a facial expression. -
Honestly,I don't know. The Fender definitely has a wider spacing than the Warwick and it's neck is wider but has a flatter profile.
See, i think the wide, flat(ish) profile of the Stingray and P bass is what i don't like about them. I know this means that i am now a bass outcast. But I don't actively avoid playing those for that reason, i still have an OLP stingray which i will be playing again once i get neck screws. Rounder profiles seem to suit me.
English people are crap at haggling, I put high prices on all my stuff with the intention of people lowballing me
I'll remember that -
I think once you add an extra string you need to forget about what profiles used to suit you, a 5 string jazz doesn't feel like a 4 string jazz etc. Assuming by Jazz you mean skinny, then Ibanez might be worth a look.
Yeah, i was thinking that. I like the look and sound of the ATK's, and want a 4. Maybe i should look into an ATK 5? Where the hell am i going to find all these basses to try? I need to spend some time in england!
I use the Jazz V a lot. Build quality wise,it's really solid like most Fenders. It can take a beating. It's easy to play too-at the moment I prefer the narrower string spacing of the Warwick though. I generally feel really comfortable playing Fender basses anyway so playability has never been an issue. In fact, when I tried it in the shop I wanted to not like it,but it felt comfortable and familiar so I bought it.
Ah right, sounds good. Does the fender not have a 17mm string spacing? what's the warwick? I played a warwick one time... neck like a cricket bat. very chunky.
Personally,I wouldn't be looking at that kind of money if I wasn't sure about playing a 5 string. You can get a great instrument for well under that. My first 5 (back in '98) was a Warwick Corvette that I got for about £450. I later got rid of it,but since then all my 5 strings have cost me less than that Fender- My Roscoe LG3500,Shuker Singlecut,Warwick Streamer and pre Nashville Tobias all cost me well under a grand. I also picked up a Mexican Fender Jazz Deluxe V for under £350 and I've used it on so many gigs.I've never had a problem with the B string or the neck joint (it's not hard to play over the entire range), or the EQ or whatever-it always plays and sounds great. At the minute,I mainly use the Warwick but I also carry the Fender as well. Don't dismiss the Yamaha basses either. They make great, very consistent, instruments. The BB East and the TRB range are particularly good.
Thanks for that. So you use a fender jazz 5 regularly? what would you say about build quality and playability of it? I might just get a second hand one if i stumble across one at the right time. I've opened up a little more to the idea of a different style bass, but at the end of the day, it's about the feel of it to me, and i just know (as far as i know from what i have played) a jazz profile suits me!
I have to be honest, I love my P bass but having played a fair few different Fender 5's (some set up fantastically by members on here at basschat)... They just don't work for me, at all... Basses I would prefer in a similar price range that I've played: Musicman (I like the 5's but not the 4's...) Warwick Yamaha TRB series (Honestly, one of the best I've played) Sadowsky (About on par with the TRB) Dingwall (THE BEST 5 I've played, not the combustion though so slightly higher budget) All of these have played much better and generally responded better to my playing than any of the fenders I've tried.
hmm... Ok, i shall have to look at a couple of those too then. I actually like the look of dingwalls. I don't usually like boutique basses, but they look pretty cool, and the fanned fret is pretty cool too. But as i have said before, the jazz neck profile suits me. Which of these would you say has the best jazz profile?
I had this situation in my first band and first gig about 28 years ago in Wales. I few of us at Dyfed College of Art had put a band together for an ents night at the college, but one guy really wanted to be the singer (we already had one) and for some reason it was left to me to keep telling him he couldn't be the singer, despite his angry protestations that he was better than our singer and should be in the band. A few weeks later, on the day of the gig, a few people started telling me this twat wanted to beat the sh*t out of me after the show. I didn't take this TOO seriously but then even the guys in the band were telling me this and said he really means it, he's a nutter with mental health problems. Thanks guys. I am not a fighter and this made me really f***ing nervous, nauseous, like I was at school with the bully rumours of a beating later. We did the show and this prick was near the stage watching me. So my first gig was NOT a pleasure. I went to the dressing room after the show, funny no-one else in the band joined me isn't it. Then this prick comes in, clamps his hand on my throat and starts telling me I'm a worthless f*** and I should have let him sing. After about half an hour of this I'd managed to calm him down and he said I wasn't f***ing worth it, and loads of other sh*t. He left, cursing. Then the rest of the band came in! What a bunch of f***ing c**ts! I dishonoured myself by playing with them for a while after that too! I should have given them merry f***ing hell and cast them from my life.
That's pretty extreme. Although, i find that if somebody truly wants to beat you up, or worse, they will. This guy was just a fear monger. A mate of mine, a pretty good mate, started a band with me and a few other mates. He didn't get on with the drummer (The singer was a little over-protective and paranoid about his girlfriend, and thought the drummer had a thing for her... he didn't) but he was willing to look past that, fair enough. He didn't know the guitarist before. The trouble was, he was coming to practice without even having bothered to listen to songs to learn the words! he hadn't printed any lyrics, and he was constantly looking for others to give him cues when to sing. And aside from that, he was more interested in messing about, and going to the shop than anything else in our rented space (3 hours was £25). He wouldn't get up early to go to the practice space, because he was normally massively hungover or still slightly drunk from the night before. He was a fair singer, but he had to learn when he was hitting the right key and timing, and TBH, none of us had the know how to teach him. He left after 2 weeks. (yes, that all happened in 2 weeks, nobody was pleased with it). The band since split up. But he now keeps dropping hints to me that he wants to form a band. He said this a few months after he left the band too. I don't know how many ways i can tell him no. He's a decent lad, but a bit mental. He definitely would be something to behold on stage, he is a bit of a showman... more of an attention seeker, but he did always kind do things for show. But i don't know how he would take it if i really told him why i couldn't form a band with him. I seriously think it wouldn't be a happy story. I told him the best thing for him to do was pick up a guitar, and in a year or 2, he could earn a living singing in pubs.
