1.
Maple is chosen for it's properties for the neck and rosewood for the fingerboard for different reasons. I don't think that making a rosewood neck with maple fingerboard would yeild a desirable neck tbh. Maybe an actual lutier could explain why that isn't done...? I have offered my opinion on a single Fender P with minimal differences ...Same body, same pick-ups the same strings, with a swapped out neck and I can say that, that was definitely enough for *me* to form an opinion. I have many basses which all sound different too, but I agree with what you say, that's not such a useful test for forming opinions.
Never heard of a rosewood neck with a maple board, but there is this: http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/SR5_Rosewood_neck,_White.html Looks nice, but must weigh a ton!
 2. Gone to a very good new home. Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in and/or appreciation for this lovely bass.

 4. Sorry guys! Although it isn't actually sold yet - it's on hold pending payment.
 5. TC Electronic Hall of Fame every time.
 6. Already on hold for the moment - the fat lady has not sung yet, but is definitely clearing her throat.
 7. Love this stuff. Here's one of my faves - Q-Tip with J Dilla on sampling duties http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhumw8f_SB4
 8.
Excellent bass. If one may make so bold, EXCELLENT advert. Unlike some of the "Fender for sale, pm me", can't be arsed adverts for £1600+ Custom Shops. Well done that man, as you were. GLWTS.
Many thanks, Karl - I know that many of us on this forum regard your sale ads as the gold standard, so it is very pleasing to receive the Master's seal of approval!
 9.
Lovely looking bass imho - one of the best colours i reckon
Thanks, Mudpup! Yes, one of my all time fave colour combos. As often happens with sonic blues of this vintage, it has mellowed to an almost sea foam green colour. Interesting reading on this phenomenon here: http://planetbotch.blogspot.co.uk/2011/12/fender-mij-62-reissue-jazz-bass.html

Happy to courier to your door via UPS, which I will arrange and add to the price depending on where in the world you live. Payment: Bank transfer or cash on collection only. Age: 21. According to the date on the neck, this bass was born on 16th July 1993. History: the first owner only had it for a year or two, but managed to put two cigarette burns on the headstock. The second owner played it in his church band for many years, and took much better care of it. Finally, I acquired it in 2012 and have done a few pub gigs with it since then. Weight/ergonomics: on the light side for a Jazz at 4.12kg / 9.08lbs (US) / 9lbs, 1oz. Balances perfectly on the strap - no neck dive at all. Health and fitness: Everything is original and in full working order. Neck is straight, truss rod works great, no intonation problems or dead spots to report. Low-medium action, but can be set even lower according to taste. Plenty of life left in the frets. The bridge pup volume knob was a bit wobbly, but this has just been fixed by the legendary Joe at Guitar Spares & Repairs here in Brum. Having said all that, I want to emphasise that this is a road worn instrument - not a fake road worn one, but the real deal. There are lots of dings and dongs, there is some corrosion on the pole pieces and some of the pickguard screws, and there are those two (genuine!) cigarette burns on the headstock. However, none of these flaws affects playability; IMO they just add even more character to what is already an extremely cool instrument. Pedigree: As far as I know this bass is a 'proper' MIJ Fender; it was sold to me as such, and when I checked the serial number on the neck at The Guitar Project (http://www.guitardat...org/fender.aspx), I got the following result: "Your guitar was made at the Fuji-gen Plant (for Fender Japan), Japan in the Year(s): 1993 - 1994". I cannot give you a 100% guarantee about the body, however - it's certainly Japanese, and certainly dates from the same time period, but it has some Japanese writing instead of a serial number in the neck joint, so who knows. (If you want to read more on this, see http://basschat.co.u...anji-conundrum/). The asking price of the bass reflects the fact that I'm not absolutely sure about its lineage. Sound: Whatever the pedigree, this sounds just like a vintage Jazz should. Newly strung with a fresh set of Ernie Ball Hybrid Slinky 45-105s, so it's sounding particularly zingy and growly at the mo. Case: Comes in the same heavy duty old-school hard case (not Fender) that has protected it down the years. Why selling: I'm now thoroughly addicted to low Bs and want to raise funds for another 5er. I'm sorely tempted to keep this bass just for its unimpeachably cool looks and massive sentimental value, and I know I'm really going to miss it when it's gone, but really this is a working bass that should be out there getting played, not just sitting in its case getting drooled over as a museum piece. Trade/part exchange options: some of these are very long shots, but hope springs eternal ...

MTD Kingston Saratoga 5, CRB 5 or Heir 5
MTD 535-24 or 635-24
EBMM Stingray 5 - post 2008 only, i.e. must have alnico not ceramic pups.
No other trade offers, please. Thanks for looking!
 11. Thanks for the helpful replies, folks. Kempy: no, there is no model number stamped on the neck pocket, so it's impossible to know whether the body and neck come from the same place. The number on the neck itself seems legit enough - the date suggested by both The Guitar Project (http://www.guitardaterproject.org/fender.aspx) and Guitars Japan (http://www.guitarsjapan.com/fenderchart.html) exactly matches the date of birth written on the bottom edge of the neck, under the truss rod screw. But as for the body … none the wiser! But in the end I am not that bothered either way - both body and neck are clearly from Japan, both parts definitely date from 1993 (when the first owner bought it), and most importantly of all, it looks and sounds absolutely killer. And I'm ok with that!
 12.
Maybe it's the name of a prior owner ?
Yes, that's another possibility - must admit that had not occurred to me! Thanks!
 13.
I never seen a fender Japan with that style of stamp before. What is stamped on the neck? Maybe you have a fender neck and other make body.
Thanks, Kempy535 - interesting to know this. Here's the neck stamp (with part of the serial number erased by me so as to foil ebay identity thieves): So, insofar as one can ever tell these things, the neck is definitely MIJ Fender. Yes, I guess it is possible that the body comes from elsewhere, but I think it's a bit unlikely, given the ownership history of the bass (which I know in full). Curiouser and curiouser!
 14. Thanks, Bolo - I guess it must be the 'stealth' pickguard, then! I've just found answers to my questions 3 and 4 above: according to http://myweb.ecompla...tompage0029.htm it looks as though your bass was born in 2003, which means that it has a ceramic pup (SR5s went back to alnico in 2008, according to Basschatter stingrayPete1977, who really knows his stuff). But an accurate weight would still be good!
 15. And another couple of questions: 3) when was it made? (if you don't know, you can find out by checking the serial number on the internet) 4) Does the pup have alnico or ceramic magnets? OK, that's it!
 16. Really nice bass! Two questions: 1) Can you give us an accurate weight in Kg, please? 2) Is the pickguard original? As far as I know, EBMM black pickguards are always in a shiny gloss finish (see e.g. the one in my avatar pic) but the one on your bass looks to be in some kind of matt finish.
 17.
I think it means 'Squier'. Truckstop
If only it were a (JV) Squier, rather than just a lowly MIJ Fender! Then I could set a much higher asking price for it when I put it up for sale later this week.
 18. Wednesday night is Troll Night, apparently ...
 19. This one's for all you Fender Japan geeks out there. Pictured above is my MIJ Jazz, made by FujiGen Gakki in 1993. On removing the neck recently I was delighted to find some Kanji (Japanese characters) in the neck joint. Here they are: Now for a closer look: Very cool looking, for sure, but what does it all say? As my Kanji deciphering skills are distinctly limited, I asked a Japanese native speaker friend to do a spot of translating work for me. She tells me that the three vertical characters at the bottom definitely say "Hokkaido" (北海道), which of course is the name of the northernmost of Japan's four main islands. She is much less confident about the horizontal bit at the top, however, but she thinks that it might say "Ozawa" (小沢), which is a fairly common family name, or "Otaru" (小樽), which is the name of a port town in Hokkaido. Based on this info, the likeliest scenarios are: 1. the bass was put together by Mr Ozawa (or, less plausibly, Mr Otaru) from Hokkaido 2. the bass was put together by an unnamed factory worker from Otaru in Hokkaido Now for the conundrum: it is also possible that it means that the bass was actually assembled in Hokkaido, but as far as I am aware FujiGen Gakki's factories have always been in Nagano, which is in Honshu (Japan's main island). So, does anyone know if there is any manufacturing connection to Hokkaido, or am I right in thinking that Hokkaido is more likely to be where the bass builder comes from? ご協力いただきありがとうございます!
 20.
Nice collection!
Thanks! Really wish I still had my first bass - the 1981 USA Precision. Black/black/maple - killer looks, lovely feel, amazing tone (well, two amazing tones, really - aggressive punk or deepest dub.) Sigh ...
