1. I think maplins only sell lead free solder. I personally found it a pain in the arse to use - it was like pushing mercury around. I found some flux cored 60/40 lead solder from Robert Dyers and it was so much easier. just don't eat it apparently
2.
That's really quite fascinating! I think I'll be making lots of musical genre faux pas identifying what is what until I get into some actual artists/pieces.
Me too apparently. My corazón has entirely the wrong continent. I had no idea flamenco wasn't Latin; it had always felt the same to me. Hopefully neither Ojos nor the several million Latin musicians will be offended at my error, and especially my apologies to Ricky Martin. Sorry Ricky.
3. It's quite a wide genre to recommend at a guess but... I like these guys: Ojos de Brujo. They're a 9 piece flamenco band from Barcelona. The rhythms are really infectious and the bass playing's pretty good too. Heres a clip of them playing Jools Holland I'd recommend either albums: Bari or Vengue to check out. But if you were thinking more South American tango then that's a different matter...
4.
If you're lucky then swapping the wires around on one pickup will work fine - but if you're not lucky you may find that you don't get the "humbucking effect" when both pickups are full on. I've had this - its because one pickup also needs to be reversed magnetic polarity as well as reverse wound. If you do a google you can find more details, but from what I remember there isn't a standard between makers, although a pair from any maker will be fine you can't rely on single pickups from different makers working as a pair (even if they claim absolute vintage fender authenticity..) BB
This guy explains the magnetic phasing thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Zk6Kbg6p78
5. Aside for remembering to enjoy it, i find pre-stage nerves tend to make me a bit sluggish. So if that happens have a jump around, a stretch, a warmup - whatever just to make the blood flow. And if your hands are cold - warm em on a radiator or under a hot tap. The stress goes when you're playing so just have fun. Paul
6. thanks guys, and thanks for the links. I probably am looking for a faithful p-copy (shallow i know) but it's definitely something that will have to be done fairly soon. The Aria II Primary's always looked good to me. I may have to hold out til the right one comes my way. I'll definitely be checking it out with you guys before i do it - i'm not sure i'd be able to spot a plywood body
7. Cool - natural selection for basses. I guess im going to start saving then , im still annoyed i missed that bass up the top. Does anyone know what wood it might be?
8. Wow, a wealth of knowledge. Thanks for the big post Jon. I had no idea about most of that - esp. the western brands bit! I guess im looking at Grecos because i heard a "super real" strat-copy from the same era. The tone was really sweet - and that if i could find a p-bass similar i'd be stoked. I'm probably looking for a simple answer in a big topic, but, what's a faithful p-bass copy from that era? Will the domestic market brands be a safer bet in terms of quality? [I'll definitely keep an eye on the thread]
9.
No I dont know much either but that one is mighty purdey.....
Isnt it - The pictures from the back showed a really prominent wood grain. MMmm, I'm on a mission to find something similar.
10. I've done some research and have seen a few around on Ebay (mostly imports), but have never heard one. Does anyone have any experience with the late 70's / early '80's models? Any advice would be great! I saw one for sale in Singapore that looked gorgeous... It got sold tho

Stapleton tour
The tour is mega-compact due various issues, not least the fact that our guitarist/singer lives in New York and our drummer is a teacher, but we'll be near all the important places .
Sure are! Actually i didn't realise how close it really is. Its only a 30 minute drive. Its going to be a gig to look forward to after my exams. Consider it in my 'emo-diary'
P.S. Nice D-Plan cover as your Avatar/Profile picture
Thanks, its an all round favourite.

Stapleton tour

Thats a pretty compact tour! Is there going to be a London date? If not i'll try to see you guys at Kingston.
13. Yeah definitely the ghost notes lilt the bassline. I found this video helpful to learn from: Rio Its loads of fun to play

Youtube Finds
Will watch this at home. Hiromi's stuff is top notch. She can get a bit intense at times but on the whole her compositions are amazing. Does anyone else find her drummer, Martin Valihora (sp?), to just ooze ability and taste? I find his groove playing, chops and fills really catch my attention. Mark
FYI Hiromi's playing a 3 night run at Ronnie Scotts starting Monday. If i wasn't chained to a desk revising, i'd be there like a shot. :/ Also as mentioned above Subschool5 is definitely worth checking out. He's been my substitute bass teacher for a while now. Loads of really varied styles but all good basslines.
15. Sweet. Thanks Dave, this stuff is really helpful. Especially the info about hand posture - lots of scale work tends to give my fretting hand pins and needles so i'll keep an eye out in future! Good stuff!
16. I have had good experiences buying tubes from Hotrox www.hotroxuk.com/ They were helpful and not hell bent on selling you the most expensive stuff. Ended up having a 15minute chat about 60's carlsbro heads, which was unexpected but good!
17. I have the briefcase, which i picked up soon after they came out in the UK. It was £450 at the time, but it was perfect for what i wanted. Small gigs, random rehearsals and general practice. (I've only used with a MIA Jazz) I think it's a fantastic little amp, it's incredibly clean and quick. It won't hit you in the guts (it simply doesn't have the power) but it's a 'swiss army knife' in most situations. It's been a great help to me in the studio; the DI is fantastic, the optical compressor is well behaved and it sounds great with a bass or guitar. Since getting an Ashdown ABM setup, i've been tempted to rackmount the amp section (which is detachable) to use as a pre. It's filled with clever touches, great design and built like a tank. Its so useful i can't imagine selling "little nellie". Although probably more a niche product, i definitely think it's one to try.
18. Yep, i think your right. Though to my ears the signal's split and the thin track is sharp. You might be able to get a similar effect with a whammy. (maybe) My band's covered this track - its such a laugh. But we were imitating this bands version : Reuben's alter-ego: Los Skeletos. It's the last track on the myspace: Los Skeletos
19.
dood, how do you link it with the head - do you play bass straight into the compressor, or do you use the eff. loop?
I would think it'd be an effect loop job, or after a pre-amp/ before a power-amp. I had a thought about using the pre-amp section of my pjb briefcase for compression in the meanwhile. It has optical 1:3 comp that's really nice. If i pre-out from the PJB and into an ABM head - is there a problem with using "instrument in" or should i use the "line-in"?
20.
Just found a couple of places for you http://www.thomann.de/gb/skb_skb19ac1.htm?...f0f29344581d810 http://www.boomerangsounds.co.uk/product.p...01ed93729a81442
Mwah! thanks guys. That's really helpful. P
21.
Does anyone know where I can buy some mounting bolts etc for an SKB rack case?
Nope! I'm looking too, i can only find the studio rack spring-clip hardware. If you find out will you post?
22. thanks Dood, im going to check it out. Re SC - the guys always mark up their price -get them to price match!
23. Cool, i'm considering the DBX 166XL for my rack. Dood, what were the features that you were looking for in the C300 that the dbx didnt do? Was it purely the parallel compression (is this also called NY compression?)?
