That is a lovely piece of timber - what colour body would you put it on though??

Awesome!

Bump, need it gone before Wednesday. Otherwise it'll get confined to the draw of stuff I'm not taking with me...

I actually have Madagascan Rosewood on my Alpher bass, which I'm certain is what you guys are talking about.
Obviously, with having it on a bass that was built for me, I haven't had experience working with it, but I absolutely love the tonal characteristics of it as I'm a fan of Maple boards.

Bump for final price drop before leaving it here in Birmingham before I move.

Would be rude not to contribute...

I've had a go on the 504 as I purchased one (through the shop I used to work at) for a friend who needed a new bass.
I'm a fan of easy-to-play basses over the sound but the 504 delivers in both areas to be honest. A nice solid body that has cutaways in the right places and a really nicely shaped neck. The finish on the back of the neck was great too and the out-of-box setup was pretty much spot on, although the intonation did need adjusting.
Other than that, as others have said, it sounds really good for the money. Yamaha's pickups are renowned for punching above their weight, or at least that's my point of view , and the new ones they developed for their TRBX range sound a lot better than most other basses in that price range. -
You saw the title.. What do you want?

Most brands with low resale value. Two that I've had personal experience with are G&L and Ibanez.
If you have around £350 to spend, the G&L Tributes are amazing, both the 4 and 5 strings and, as long as you can get on with the feel of it, it'll stomp on most other things in that category for versatility and quality.
The Ibanez, at least for me, was a similar story. Bought a 5 string Prestige for £600 and it was only since trying out other, more expensive, basses that I realised what a silly price that was to pay for such a good instrument.
Perhaps I'm being a bit biased here, but the Alpher Instruments range of affordable basses, their Prime range, is stupidly good value for what is essentially a custom built instrument. For £999 you get an instrument with pre-defined pickups and a small selection of woods to choose from but that is put together in the same way that their high end basses are. Compare that to most other popular brands and it comes in at under their prices for an instrument that's hand build in the UK. And if you're worried about having not heard much from them, just take a look at the recent reviews in this months Bass Guitar Magazine. To get something of that quality for £999 is crazy. I know there's one on my list. -
Just booked my tickets!
Already have a BC polo, but I slimmed down too much and now I don't look cool enough... So I obviously had to buy another (smaller) one.
Hopefully I'll get to actually meet some people as I'll be by myself this time! -
Hmmm... Looking for a P bass to whack flat wounds on with a maple board... Got the cash... Should I?
-
Cheers for the suggestions. I'm definitely going for that flatwound, P-bass type sound. And the maple is just a preference.

I've got a rough idea, but I don't often delve into the 'Fenderish' end of things so I'm asking your assistance. It could be used, but I'd also like some ideas of new basses as I'll be down in London soon with a lot of shops available to trawl though...

As the title says, virtually new. Used once at rehearsals but we barely rehearse in public so have not needed to use this. It has worked really well though and I was quite surprised at how nicely it picks everything up once you get it in the right position. Dead easy to use and comes with 2GB Sandisk MicroSD card.

£18 delivered.
Definitely something up with this. At first, I thought it just wasn't good enough but it doesn't seem to be limiting the signal anywhere near as strongly as it could. Has also cut out and stopped working for brief periods of time before coming back so I genuinely have no idea what's up with it. Seems like an easy fix to someone who knows their way around wires, but I don't so I've put it up for sale.
£18 delivered. Paypal or Bank Transfer please.

Like I just posted on the Facebook, I need to get down there this year and actually meet some people and (hopefully) attend some clinics! I'll be alone too with both days to kill.
I just need to book my tickets... -
Just thought I'd drop by to say that I won't be attending. Not because I don't want to, but because I'll have moved house and will be residing in London by the time it swings around! Sorry guys, I was looking forward to being able to show off my Alpher to everyone.

No, but I've done quite a bit of research in the past regarding the quality of instrument you get. The general opinion tends to be that they're only worth the effort if you're interested in replacing parts on them I.E. the bridge, the nut, the electronics etc. I wanted something awesome looking, but that could at least be played out of the box so I avoided them!

Check out the man himself. -
I also own one, and I have nothing bad to say about them. What drew me in initially was there awesome eye for woods. Rather than go for the nicest bit of quilted or flamed maple, they have access to so many lovely top woods that wouldn't be seen on anything outside of a custom build. In my case, it was a rather vividly figured piece if maple, but if you click the link in my sig', you'll find that the body wood that I picked (on their recommendation) ended up being as attractive.
As far as playability and sound go, it's still the nicest instrument I've played. I'd never heard of Catswhisker pickups before talking to the guys, but my specifications were sort of along the lines of 'monstrous' and they deliver, without a doubt. I actually quoted the Musicman Bongo when I talked about them originally and I was over the moon with the result. Playability is brilliant too, with a neck that was very much like my old Ibanez Prestige. Smooth, oiled Wenge + comfortable profile = joy.
The specifications of my bass came about because what I wanted wasn't really available off the shelf (a really tight string spacing at the bridge), rather than wanting a lovely 'version' of a Fender or something like that. Because of that, mine will always be better (for me) than any other basses available out there, so I'll always be a bit biased, but as you can see from the post above mine, if you want traditional plus some, that's what you'll get.
I should also mention that I went with the guys at Alpher on the basis that I should get my bass built by someone who I really got on with and felt comfortable with handling and creating something for me. After emailing a number of UK builders, these guys came out on top by a mile. I also got told a deadline before they'd even picked up the wood and they stuck to it. Overall, not just an awesome bass, but an awesome experience. -
I also contacted him! I've been pining for a nice fretless for a while, and at a good price as I missed out on a recent Cort that was on these forums for the same price. I'm down in London this weekend so if Kev doesn't get it, maybe I will!
