1. First pictures are taken. 2. At the moment E, b, e - A, e, a, - D, a, d - G, d, g - This sounds really impressive even without the D string group. I was a bit disappointed in tuning it in full octave mode, this tuning did not differ that much from the sound my 8 string produces.
3. The new replacement strings finally arrived today..... They are on and tuned, doing the setup the coming days and after that make pictures.
4. Setup and pictures is not going to happen this weekend, broke two strings a moment ago due to a brainfart, the high D should not be tuned to high G.
5. The nut is finished....... And the beast has strings! Not yet tuned or set up, but I wanted to share this picture anyway. Tonight I'll be doing the set up, tomorrow hopefully more pictures.
6. The tension rises Made the notches for the strings in the bridge saddles.
7. Before setting up i still need to make the nut and make notches for the strings in the bridge saddles. Yes and also the first one I'll be playing.
8. Wiring is done. Everything worked the way it should and I want it to in one go, normally I have to work out some kinks before it does what's required by me.
9. I'm not complaining either, the hump and sharp fret-ends were fixed with a fret level and a crowning & polish session. The hump was less than half a millimeter at the the highest point, it's still in the fingerboard but the frets are level. The low bridge saddle was also no problem, I put a half a millimeter thick spacer underneath it and the string height was okay After all the things I've done to it it's a very good dirt cheap acoustic bass.
10. The hump my 4 string acoustic bass had between fret 10 and 17, a lot of sharp fret-ends and a too low cut bridge were fairly sure the reason mine was sold as a 'deko'.
11. A Jazz Bass needs block-inlays. Added some inlay stickers to the JB-Shorty.
12.
There's no point in risking it, alittlebitrobot - the trouble with through necks is that once they are glued in, if there are any further issues at all you're basically b******d
It's not that black and white with a NT neck, you can always modify the bass to a bolt on or set neck. But if possible, don't risk it and just make a new NT neck while it's still easy to do.
13. They should, I made them out of the cutoffs coming from the rough body slab.
14. Done the last odds and ends of woodworking. Extra chamber for the push/pull pot in the cavity lid. Finished the knobs (still need a few extra coats of oil). From now on it's only metal that's going to be worked on/with.
15. Stacked bass/treble, midrange control with frequency range. For the exact details check Noll Electronic.
16. Pickups are in place. Now I need to mentally prepare for the wiring.
17. Put some stuffing inside the cavity, still needs to be wired up further but to do that I first must place the pickups.
18. I was already considering to do sound clips for this one. You are not the first to ask (well, here on BassChat you are - but I post this build diary on a few other forums as well) and given 12 string clips are not that common I might be tempted to spend some time on them.
19. Aha. I will just start out with standard tuning, toying around with alternatives will for sure come later on. First the machine must work, then the fun can begin.
20.
So you'll put a couple of grooves in every other saddle for the 'guitar' strings?
Yes, that's the idea.
By the way, how the hell do you tune a 12 string?
This is my first so I don't really know. Probably with some patience. The 8 string I made a few years back tunes without any problems, only setting it up the first time was a bit time consuming but no major pain.
21. At first I was planning to, but after talking with Cataldo Basses over at TalkBass I decided to give it try as it is. For most of his 12 strings he uses these bridges, unmodified, without any problems. If I run into any weird problems I can still modify it.
22. Applied shielding inside the controls cavity and mounted the battery-box. Mounted the bridge to double check the position and if the strings will line up the way I thought up... Is exactly what I wanted.
