1.
Chris F i ordered them direct, took a couple of weeks to get here but well worth the wait.
cheers..I think I might invest in a set...blood red I think
2.
i like the bass sound too,i used to use innovation super silvers but the superior bassworks deluxe have a much better vintage sound to them & they are very cheap too.
Ive heard good things about those strings ...$60 for a set sounds good, did you get them from the UK or did you order them from USA ??
3.
i just uploaded Ricky Nelson's Stood Up to the same link, love the song to bits obne of my all time favourite rockabilly tunes. i also put another original track on "Walk away" which is my favourite track, let me know what you think please matey.
blimey..never knew Ricky could rock like that. Ive been into rockabilly for over 35 years and never heard that before...great thumping bass sound. Of your ones, Long Train is my favourite, with Little Ray of Sunshine a close second. Not that theres anything wrong with Walk Away. Let me know if you guys are playing in the Bedfordshire area, and I will come along.
4. Whole band are sounding good artisan..... How long have you been playing ?? ..and have you had lessons or are you self taught ??
5. Heres the thread I started...the very helpful chaps on here answered most of the questions you probably have on it... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/177932-is-a-gear4music-upright-any-good/page__fromsearch__1 To cut a long story short...I went with a £400 Thomann. Had to change the strings as they were useless, but apart from that I love it. Ive gone down the piezo bridge wing pickups route...mainly due to money being damn tight at the moment. Ive got one on the bridge and one behind the finger board for the slap sound. Its through a mates Peavey amp..and it sounds pretty darn good....even without a pre-amp..One day I will upgrade to a decent pickup....a new bridge....and a good amp of my own, but for now it good enough for me. Its got Innovation Psycho Slap strings on it at the moment (which I got from someone on the site for £20....see they really are a great bunch ) ...they sound ok, but I really want to try out some other strings..just to see what they sound like. This is the one I went for... http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_kontrabass_rockabilly_01.htm If you want to ask anything at all about any of it, just message me...... good luck.....and have fun Chris
6. Sorry cant help with the bass...just wanted to say that the band sound great.
7.
I felt just the same as you at open mic nights but then I had to ask the bass player if I could use his amp - and got such a lot of friendly help and advice. Bassplayers are great! Each and every bassist I've approached has been so lovely, friendly and helpful. One said that it was great to meet another bass player, adding that he didn't usually meet other bassists unless they'd been double booked. So I suspect your bassists will be only to pleased to have someone appreciate their skills and knowledge.
My missus said pretty much the same as you.....except she mentioned something about me boring someone else rather than her
8.
Offer him/her a drink.. you'll come over as a saint
lol....as long as I dont have to buy the whole band a drink ...Im a tight southerner ya know
9.
Just an "off-the-wall" thought, but have you thought about approaching the bass player at any local gigs and getting some hints and tips from them? I'm sure most would be happy to share some knowledge, and if they don't - well, you'd be no worse off, other than the cost of a night out
Funny you should say that...I go to a rockabilly/rock n roll club once a month..and they usually have a band. And I have been tempted to approach the bass player on several occasions, but Ive never worked up the nerve...sad huh!? 47 years old and too shy to ask for a few tips. But its a good idea...so I might just have a few pints of courage and ask the next bands bass player....although I dont want to come over as annoying. cheers for the nudge
10. That first book looks good. My idea with a dvd is that I could play along with it in my practice room. But I think I may get the book as well so that I can read it at lunchtimes at work. Gonna have to leave a few weeks between each...spent loads recently thanks all
11. Ah...good old ebay. 16 quid..thats more like it..not that Im tight or anything
12.
i bought this dvd a while ago, cant remember paying £28 though but i do know its a good dvd to learn from
Is it ok for someone who is pretty much still a beginner ?? ..after a trawl through the net, Ive only found bad review which is the one on Amazon that I first saw.. ...I will try ebay and see how much it is on there.
13.
This one? I haven't seen it, so can;t comment. http://www.amazon.co...48929391&sr=8-5 oops, edited for UK version.
cheers...saw that one..not heard good things about it unfortunately .....plus HOW MUCH!!!????..for a dvd ???
14. It looks like lessons are out for the foreseeable future. So I am after either a dvd ( preferably )....or a book, its got to be aimed at rockabilly bass. Ive had a look on line and cant seem to find anything from the UK ( I don't really want to order something from USA or Europe). I know its not ideal, but at the moment its a dvd/book or nothing.
15. Yup..another thumbs up for Thomann from me...I bought one of these a few months back..... http://www.thomann.de/gb/thomann_kontrabass_rockabilly_01.htm ..and I love it...although you will need to change the strings as they are rubbish.
16. Its not as snugg a fit as I would like...so I will sort that out before I try anything else...thanks
17. An update for those who care We had a great practice session last night. Although I had horrendous feed back unless I stood about 20 feet from the amp, so Im going to have a go at making some F hole covers. Also....although the psycho slaps are good strings...I keep wondering what the ones that Thomann sent me are like...so Im going to put one or two on and see how they sound. Still havent managed to get together with Daf Lewis....my fault not his.....mainly due to my schedule and finances, but I will do it sooner rather than later before I pick up too many bad habits
18. Hmmmm...my strings seem to be pretty much at the same height as yours. I can get my fingers into the same position as your mentioned...so I assume its just a lack of technique on my part. I will definitely try your tip about moving the hand rather than the whole arm..cheers. Thanks for the advice on the scales...I will persevere. Got the mic today.....so later Im gonna annoy all my neighbours, not just the close ones
19. lol....its going pretty well, thanks. Ive stopped treating the bass as a percussion instrument...mostly And Im hoping to get together with Daf Lewis sometime soon......so he can probably tell me that Im doing everything wrong Although...the strings are about 10mm from the finger board....which seems to be about the average on here, but Im having a bit of trouble being consistent when playing fast, but I assume thats down to technique...or rather the lack of it. Still struggling to get my head around scales....they are just soooooo boring...and I cant really see the point to them, but Im trying.
20.
21. Cheers... I need all the help I can get
22.
Surely that's true of any instrument? (OK, apart from anything percussive!) Sounds like the tuning issue has disappeared and there was no strings snapped... great to hear you had fun and that no "mild peril" was encountered
Well I must admit..I thought I could get away without learning scales..I thought that they were just for posh people that use a bow ..my plan was....well Im not really sure what my plan was.......but I will knuckle down and really get practicing now that theres no danger of losing an eye to a snapping string
23. All I can say is......WOW!!! great jam session.....ran through a few songs out of our set that we actually like...Lights Out...Brand New Cadillac (dropped by our glorious leader, but we like it ) and a couple of others...and even wrote our first song...well the tune..still no words yet. The thumping beat of the upright made such a difference to how everything sounded....I took the bass guitar too, but after the first run through of Lights Out I didnt touch it again....the DB sounds better..and its much more fun to play. I know I have a long, long way to go..and I have the horrible feeling that Im actually going to have to learn scales but damn it..Im having soooooo much fun. Oh..and the Innovation Psycho Slaps are very, very good....sound wise and playability wise .....9 out of 10...would have been 10 out of 10 if they came in different colours...blood red..electric blue or dark green maybe.
