1.
Was the bass player left handed perhaps?
lol....nope...she was right handed. And probably the best rockabilly bass player Ive ever seen. I spent the whole night just watching her hands....which wasnt easy considering how short her skirt was I could be wrong about the strings....but it looked like it to me....also Ive noticed all the players I have seen recently use the right hand 2 strings most of the time...and on the guitar I use mostly the E and A string...which are surely the left hand two strings on the bass.
2. Is it my imagination....or do some upright bass players swap the strings around,,as in the E string on the right as you look at it rather than on the left ??? ..It makes sense, as with rockabilly you are mainly playing the bottom 2 strings.... Also......the whole mic set-up and amp/pre amp thing confuses the hell out of me.......can anyone explain what set up I would need for playing rockabilly ??? preferably without costing an arm and a leg. I use a decent bass guitar amp at the moment (not mine) ..and would like to use it with the upright when I get it if possible. cheers Chris
3. Ah...right. There is a thread on this site called "Trying to understand the lingo? Acronyms explained!" ....but its about internet-speak. Surely there should be a thread for bass references??? I mean the whole "bottom string"...which is actually the top string on the guitar thing confuses me still. And there are lots of references on here that make no sense to me at all
4.
I've a 12w practice amp at home, I'll test it through that later and see how it fares. I can't yet mind, as I'm in the pub. That said though, I run all my bass gear through a guitar head.
Cheers...er..."guitar head" ?????
5.
If you're ok with budget gear just to get you started like me. I managed to pick a cheap pickup for £20 in a local shop. It's a stick on piezo made for acoustic guitar. It does the job perfectly and gigged with it. It's ideal to get you going and if you're tell into it, you can always invest in a decent one at a later date. I just stick it on and run it through my normal to no problems.
Ah right..thanks. That sounds good enough to start with.....its just that our gig amp belongs to our guitarist...so I dont want to blow it
6.
I paid a visit to their warehouse near York around a month ago. They had 2 in the showroom. I had a go on both and to me the cheaper one of the two sounded better.
Must admit, as my fund is limited I was thinking of going for the cheaper one...so that I can afford the pick-up etc. Although the jet black one is calling my name
7.
Thomann may be a better bet.
WOW!!!!...your not kidding...just been on their website. And I like their basses very much..I reckon Im gonna go wiith one of those..cheers
8.
Otherwise if its an electric upright, then its just like normal plug'n'play.
wash your mouth out with soap
9. oh...and am I right in thinking that they can be played through a bass guitar amp ???
10. Just out of curiosity...which one did you get. They seem to have several in the price range I mentioned.
11. Cheers..it sure does help. Yeah I noticed that it includes the gig bag and hardcase...which I thought was good...wont be needing the bow...its gonna be slapped
12. Hi all been playing bass guitar for a few months now, but ever since I was 14 (many, many years ago), all Ive wanted is an upright. I was hoping to get one next year, but due to various things that have fallen into place, it looks as though I will be able to get one in the next month or two. So...a few questions....firstly, as the title of thread asks...is the gear4 music upright any good ?? as in value for money..and sound ....or is there a better "starter bass" out there...baring in mind that I will only have £300 - £500 to spend. secondly...... is there anyone in the Beds area that knows of anywhere that I can try an upright out??? as I have never even touched one. cheers Chris
13. Hi my son is an awesome rock guitarist (ok so Im his dad and Im biased...but he really is good) and he is looking to join a band. He is into AC/DC, Iron Maiden, Airbourne, Black Keys, Black Sabbath, Wolfmother etc etc. Looking to do rythmn, but doesnt mind lead. Obviously he doesnt drive, but we can get him most places. He has played in a band before...but they broke up over..yup you guessed it MUSICAL DIFFERENCES cheers....Chris

15. lol...cheers all. I will have a look for some Rotosound Trubass. As for ripping out the frets...erm...I think not.....a step too far methinks......and Im having trouble finding the right notes with the frets...let alone without oh..and does anyone know which length I want?? short, medium or long ??
16. Hi Im 47..originally from London, but living in Bedfordshire. I picked a bass up for the first time just after Christmas this year after a friend ask me if I wanted to start a band with him. Luckily both he and my son are excellent guitarists so they have both been teaching me. The band plays rockabilly...I know what you are gonna say.."you need an upright for rockabilly". And I totally agree, but at the moment for many, many reasons an upright is not an option...hopefully next year.( I also like rock music..AC/DC Iron Maiden etc etc) My guitar is a Hofner Violin Bass Ignition HI-BB and I love it. Ive put some foam under the bridge and its sounding very much like an upright. Next step is some flatwound strings.....I would appreciate it if anyone knows which ones are best for my guitar, as I havent got a clue cheers all...Chris
