Lots of good suggestions so far. The summary seems to be grabber/ripper, ibanez but rare and difficult to date, shergold lovely but rare. I'm going to keep my eyes on the market place and flea Bay next year and see what comes up. Otherwise it'll be a long list of stuff I've got gas for (T40, guild, stingray, g&l l2000 etc) for too my wife and see what she chooses.
I've got a few months to play with bit these suggestions have whet my appitite.
Thanks for the help. -
Thought about putting it on ebay but thought I'd shave another £10 of here first. £170 anyone or make me a sensible offer. I've been playing it today and this little thing has so much bottom end it makes the house shake!

Thanks for the input.

Had any one got any experience of using one of these? I'm looking for a cheap pa for rehersals and pub sized gigs and one of these is for sale at a good price near me. It had my min requirements of 4 xlr inputs but I'm not sure if 200 watts is powerful enough.
We're a reasonably loud 4 piece and only looking for something to carry the vocals and an occasional acoustic guitar. Would this do the job or should I look for something with more power?

Back up again.

Really like the idea of shergold I can feel the GAS building. I remember playing an 8 string at Electric Ladyland in Bristol when I was younger and it sounded massive. I think the only sensible option is the 4 and 8 string double neck!

Buy one of these and spend the rest on something else! http://www.dv247.com/guitars/jandd-jb-vintage-1975-sfgr-bass-guitar-surf-green--201561

I like price but the green is foul. Black or natural looks good though. How do they compare to a squire cv or vm for less than half the price?
I guess with a solid alder body and a few quid on some good pickups and you cant go wrong! -
Amazing. Just the sort of thing I was after. Flying V it is then!thanks

I regret selling my g3 now. Really cool looking bass. Surprisingly light bass but the body is big so as long as you don't mind that you can't go wrong.

Sorry duplicate thread. Please delete.

Gary Mac has a corking 75 Fender P for sale in the marketplace http://basschat.co.uk/topic/236109-1975-fender-p-bass-and-original-case/
Might be a bit over budget but you will never lose money on it

Thanks I did see that but as I say not buying at the moment just getting ideas. Also thinking of something other than a Fender.
Shergold is an interesting shout I do like the look of them.
Thanks -
I've got a significant birthday next year and my wife has asked if I'd like a bass and if so what I'd want. Given that a Wal is out of the question its got me thinking about YOB basses for 1975 but something that costs in the hundreds rather than thousands so no fenders.
Some of my initial thoughts like Peavey T40 or Guild b301/302 apparently didn't start production until later in 70s and other thoughts are a gibson grabber/ripper (I sort of regret selling my G3) or something Japanese eg Tokai or matsumoku but what?
Any suggestions for decent basses for reasonable money from this era gratefully received.
Final point is I'm just getting ideas and don't have the money at the moment and thebig dayis a few months away so please don't try and sell me anything yet. Cheers -

It looks like there's a few more people in the queue for it. South coast and Liverpool manchester way. If it needs a stop off in bristol on its way back North I'm happy to be involved again and know a couple of people who would use it but couldn't this time round.
Cheers

Your thoughts of the blx led me to find this thread from a few years ago.http://basschat.co.uk/topic/87687-trace-elliot-bass-gear/page__fromsearch__1
This looks the same combo as was for sale here. So it looks like I've got a late blx combo bit with the gsm7 head in it.
Thanks for the help. -
Baton at the Buttercross Inn Chippenham tonight.
-
Thanks. I'd seen some pictures of the blx range that looked similar but as this didn't have the blx badge but only gsm7 on the amp section it confused me a bit.

Cheat, like I did. I was born in '57 and have a '57 re-issue.... its the nearest I'll get.
Edit - same stable as Shergold but perhaps Hayman and Ned Callan? They pop up occasionally around £500.

It looks like the J&D Jazz is the best option for cheating on a budget! I'm not aware of hayman and ned callan I'll keep my eyes open. Cheers
