I tend to agree. I love slap bass but sometimes its just fast for the sake of being fast. When its like that it loses the rhythm that makes it fun for me. Something like Prince's Lets Work sounds great to me. PS. It certainly takes a bit of getting used to the notation and what not. I'm obviously used to looking at the fretboard constantly so thats the main problem for me right now. Sunshine of Your Love was the only song I've already played - there is no way I could follow on screen but If I just played the way I normally do it scores highly. No slap bass songs is a bit of a let down for me but really the whole reason I bought it was to get into finger-style more.

[/quote] I actually started with slap bass. Now whenever I play fingerstyle I always do the left hand mute. Whereas I see pretty much everyone else just place their right fingers onto the string.

I struggled a lot with it at first as well. It was just a matter of practicing really slowly until I had it down. Then it all comes naturally with feel. Also MaroloweDK on youtube had some nice videos to practice - he uses his slap like a metronome a lot of the time so he adds in plenty ghost notes (certainly helped me). Also once you have certain techniques down you can add them together really simply, so you only really need to learn once. For example the Mark King left hand slap mutes and some of the triplet variations can be added to other lines a lot of the time. PS. What line are you currently working on?

I'll just chime in by saying I used to listen to a lot of rap/hip-hop (ice cube, 2pac being top) then I had the idea of picking up the bass. I discovered most of the songs I like have bass-lines sampled from old funk songs. Since then I've pretty much only listened to funk music. The songs seems to groove along better with a more definitive flow than most of the music which I can't stand coming out at the moment. PS. I still love listening to music such as ACDC, I just don't find them fun to play bass to. PS x2 . I do not listen to lyrics in music.

The wire in my bass which goes to the jack has come loose. May be a stupid question but how do I reattach it? Its a Squier VM Jazz but that shouldn't really matter. Its really just a matter of how do I reattach it (I can see where it has broken off from). Thanks

The reasons I prefer to stay away from 2nd hand are pretty simple but not set in stone. 1. I don't drive, therefore collection is an issue, otherwise delivery is very pricey. 2. I have never played guitar before so wouldn't really be able to evaluate much about it. Easier to return or be assured of a standard from new. If there was a listing near me I would be interested though.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm not much of a 2nd hand fan. Thinking now I probably have an old guitar amp somewhere. Mainly I am asking about build quality for the money. I'm not focused on any particular tone and have never played guitar so don't have anything specific to look for. Yamaha Pacifica does indeed seem well liked.
