1. Today I got to watch, listen and meet my NO 1 Bass playing influence.

Brian J Robinson of A Wilhelm Scream. His bass playing has totally shaped my ideal tone and playing style. He is absolutely amazing, we had a lovely chat about his Musicman gear, pedals and how Less then Jake was a big influence on him. A thoroughly nice bloke.

I admit I went totally fan boy on him, but he took it with good grace! Most amazing night of the summer so far!

    And for the uninitiated!

  2. Having a chat with the Toms at Wunjos today, and they are bringing in Juan Alderete of Mars Volta and Racer X fame. They wanted to know if anyone from basschat would consider coming to ask questions and to see him demoing Earthquake devices pedals? The shop can accommodate about 20 people.

10 September at Wunjos in Denmark street. 6 til 7 PM.

    Anyone up for it?

How about going for a veneer top so that you can have a natural finish? As Andy, who has mentioned this thread in another place, does.

I have a guitar (Yammy Pacifica) which is a natural finish, even though it's made from about five pieces of wood. If I were doing what you are doing, I'd think about seeing whether a dark brown transparent finish with something to make the grain pop would be a possibility.

I googled ash veneers to see if the above was possible, and there are similar veneers. But, I found this ash burl veneer.

Wouldn't that look fantastic on a top?

Looks lovely. But I don't have the time, skills or equipment to commit to such a thing.

  4. Headstock and back done!

Looking good, Shame that natural isn't an option.

Is the black we see on the back what remains of the original paint? How are you stripping?
Looking at it, actually looks more like 4-5 pieces of Alder and what could be a massive imperfection. So no natural I am afraid! Yes the black was what remained of the original paint.

I stripped the initial poly off with heat gun and wallpaper scraper. The black paint and primer was hand sanded, took quite a few hours! The headstock didn't have any primer luckily!

Now going to fine sand tomorrow, get some primer and research possible finishes!

What are you planning to do with it? Or, are you making it up as you go along? :)
Not sure at the moment! I have a few ideas, Bright Nuclear green like my old Pedulla, Hot pink, Blue and white quarters (Bristol Rovers style!) I have no idea at the moment! Body looks to be at least 2 piece, so probably wont be natural, that and the primer is a real pain!

    Open to suggestions though!

    Latest sanding progress.

Should do. I changed the white pickguard that came on my standard HB jazz for a triple ply black/white/black off ebay. Holes all in the right place. Had to do a little filing around the pickup hole and where it buts up to the bell plate but apart from that that, all dandy!!

Could you link us to that scratchplate?

    Cheers!

  7. How heavy is it Rob?

Few pics of the new 75 J...

Unfortunately I missed out on the natural 75 J last night but I did order up a cheeky p bass... It was rude not to really it was less than £20

This bass sounds, looks and plays fantastic... I reckon if you reshaped the headstock and wrote Sadowsky on it you'd fool more people than not.

  8. Hello gents.

I picked up a Harley Benton Progressive 4 string Deko bass. There was nothing wrong with it apart from the D for Deko stamps. It played and sounded great so decided to make it my own. Considering it cost me £40 shipped it was a bargain!

    So the stripping has begun!

Some nice tidy wiring work. Body and neck as fairly tight together. The poly finish was fairly easy to take off with a heatgun and wallpaper scraper. The black underneath needed a combination of Wallpaper scraper and sandpaper 240 Grit. The white primer underneath is taking much more time. Wood is alder and pretty lightweight. No flame top or anything. Almost looks like a one piece body but cant confirm until the rest of the primer is off.

Has taken about 2 and a half hours so far.

  10. So I got a P a Progressive and a Electro Classical.

The P was alright, nothing special, nothing wrong with it as far as I could tell. Uninspiring, quite heavy so moved it on.

The classical came with a broken string, Otherwise great plugged in sound, finishing was a bit rubbish but for the money pretty good!

The Progressive bass, no problems, Found that pre-amp and pickups are fantastic. The neck is P chunky which is fine for me. Good slap tone. I want a 5 or a 6 string one of these for Gospel! Very high output, but clean. Keeping the progressive but giving it a full on refinish and setup. Lightweight as well. Didn't realise there was push/pull active passive switch until I started taking apart, ace!

    Bartolini make some suitable pups.

    http://www.bartolini.net/product/4-string-bass-soapbars/

The BC4C-B and BC4C-T seem about the right thing. I doubt I'll rush though, the stock ones seem ok and it would be sensible to see what different strings sound like first.

The higher priority could be replacement pots. The pre-amp seems very versatile, but the pots are a bit stiff.

Looks like Norstrand DC4 might work as well!

    New Bass Day!!

Yes, the HARLEY BENTON B-450 BLACK PROGRESSIV has landed. Apart from the customary "D" on the neck and body, there's a small mark on the back of the body - you can see it in one of the pics. The blend pot is a bit stiff and there might be a slight need for dressing the frets as there's a bit of fret rattle on the E string.

I'm happy though. I was all set for an immediate change of strings, probably followed by a set of pups, but it all sounds fine to me. All that for £40.

What Pickups will drop in straight out?

  13. Hello ladies and gents.

My Tech 21 recently had new Blue LEDS installed along with new footswitches. Since then on occasion the pedal will crash. And the only light that lights up at that point is the B channel Input light and I can't select anything else. I have to unplug the battery to reset it.

I took it to Guitar Aid and they claim that there is a dip in power on occasion to the CPU but they don't know why.

Can anyone help? I always power with batteries and this is hugely frustrating! I could get the old LEDS put in. I am just surprised there is such a low tolerance just by putting in some brighter LEDS.

I could get Guitaraid to put them back in. But they won't commit to saying whether or not that is the problem. (I don't want to have to pay for the work if it doesn't fix the problem and they don't want to not get money for the repair if it doesn't work!)

I have emailed Tech 21 but with no reply as of yet.
