1. Small tube combo = AC30. Nah, never, not in a billion years. I had a 1964 AC30 and had to reluctantly sell it as it was far too loud for home use to get THAT tone Fortunately I also managed to bag myself an ebay bargain £293 AC15 CC1X before Christmas and I'm still wearing the stupid GAS grin now! It's fabulous and works extremely well with my Strat, Tele, Les Paul and even Burns Double 6. It's incredibly versitile and because it's the 'X' version = has Celestion Blue as opposed to those dreadful, dull as ditchwater Greenback things, it has oodles of THAT tone at sensible volumes. Ironically now that I've got the tone I want I don't seem to be playing that quietly either, but still have bags of room on the Vol & Top Boost chicken heads to go! Yes, I'm probably a Vox snob, but if you ain't heard a Vox with Blues, you just ain't heard the Vox tone.
2. Errr, that trem doesn't look Mexi to me. Some of the high end Mexi stuff is now coming through with the 2 point trems but they have vintage, bent steel saddles, i.e. 60s players. This one has a two point trem with block saddles, which looks like those found on the current American deluxe stats. While Fender have gone back to bent steel saddles from blocks, I very much doubt these 2 point trems would have been found on a Mexi made in 2007. Not that the trem / body /neck can't have been changed of course. If you're seriously interested in this Strat, if I were you I'd request a photo of the back of the guitar. You can then check what's written on the back of the headstock and neckplate in terms of serial no & country of origin. A 3 bolt neckplate would certainly point towards a 70s reissue of some sort, whereas an 'easy access' curved off corner 4 bolt would point to deluxe USA specs again. Also ask about the history, is he the first / only owner and when & where did he get it, & does he have the original receipt.
3. Oooh, if only you were made of Pine & Butterscotch Blonde and possibly a bit further south east than Gloucester, I'd snap you up! Have a bump, diddley, bump, diddley bump, bump bump anyway.
4. Up for sale is my Squier Vintage Modified Jazzmaster as current GAS attack is extending to more items by the second. 5. Thanks for the suggestion, but I think that may be rather overkill for my needs. See my 'Voxs, Ampegs or Ashdowns' thread in the amps forum or 'Bass or Amp Where should my money go?' thread in the bass forum. These explain more about my fussy ears, pursuit of oldschool tone and only needing to contend with a quiet guitar at home occasionally. Really love the looks of this. I was thinking my lottery win starter bass amp would be a Fender Bassman TV10, but having owned an 1964 AC30 (had to sell it after 20 odd years after finally being prepared to admit we wern't able to get THE tone out of it, as we just didn't play loud enough) these really do look good too. This is probably a risque question to ask on a BassChat forum, but I just read a comment on a forum saying it was also good as a guitar amp to, as good as an AC15. Did you ever try a guitar through yours? Do you know how it would rate against a Pathfinder 10B? Thanks for the advice about the price too, I thought £120 could be a bit steep. The listing doesn't offer any details about age or condition either, I'm thinking a maximum of £60 (new Pathfinder price) for a mint condition one would be more realistic, would you agree?
6. Oooooh! Look what I've just seen on ebay, a vox T-25 ebay item no 250950321234. Any opinions or experiences of these jobs chaps? I'm guesssing its all tranny and has never met a valve? Off to do more googling / youtubing etc.
7. Oooooh! Look what I've just seen on ebay, a vox T-25 ebay item no 250950321234. 'Clarence' would look lovely next to that. Any opinions or experiences of these jobs chaps? I'm guesssing its all tranny and has never met a valve? Off to do more googling / youtubing etc.
8. What??? 100 views and NO replies or offers?? Now don't be bashful BassChatters, I know you need to use one of those 6 stringed things with this but they really aren't that much harder than 4, and they're only little!
9. Can't go wrong with CAR, but if you fancy something more unusual then why not go for Sonic (not the darker Daphne) Blue, that was only originally produced with Rosewood - well on Strats anyway, ever so George Harrison. Or there's always Oly white?
10. I bought this from Deano - (see similar listing) on 'bay and used it just once to establish that A it does work and B I didn't actually need it after all. Either my neighbours appreciate my playing (unlikely), or they are in fact far enough away not to be bothered by it! So rather than sitting in my top drawer it can be sold and put towards my latest GAS (Guitar Acquisitions Syndrome) attack, brought on by discovering the Strat of my dreams and needing to get my first bass. £20.00 Deano's description tells you all you need to know: Check out the EXCELLENT write up in Guitar and Bass Magazine, April 2009, 10/10 rating, a must have! The interior electronics are top quality components. These are hand-wired and put together by myself personally. The Deano’s Amp Booster Box achieves an effect similar to that of more expensive power soaks at a fraction of the cost. If your amp has a serial effects loop or a set of preamp out and power amp in jacks, you can use this box to get the tube tone you paid for without blasting them through the walls. The Deano’s Amp Booster Box is designed to work with the effects loop of an amp. If your amp doesn't have an effects loop, this is not for you. If your amp doesn't have a Master Volume control or if your Master Volume only controls the drive channel the Deano’s Amp Booster Box will give you master control of all your channels and settings at once. This is a VERY cool item, everyone knows that all tube amps sound AMAZING when cranked WAY up so that the tubes are really being pushed, but that's much too loud right? This simple box solves that problem without performing ANY modifications to the amp at all!!! Simply plug it into the effects loop send and return on your amp and turn the amp volume up as high as you want, then adjust the overall volume with the Deano's Amp Booster Box...this allows you to get more of that full blown open tube tone at nice safe levels, it really works great! From zero to one it's either on or off but it you move the knob very slowly at a snails pace you will be able to crank the volume. Works on all Fender Hot Rod Blues Deluxe/Deville Twins basically on any amp with a send and return socket with a standard (series) effects loop regardless of ohm load/power rating/impedance! Many players are using these boxes as their secret weapon to dial in that pure tube tone at reasonable levels for VERY little money, works great live, at home, in the studio, wherever! Simply send from your amp into the input of the booster box and then out of the booster box into the return of your amp. This device also helps solve the problem of an EXTREMELY touchy volume knob on your amp, you know what I mean, zero has no volume but 1 or 2 is already MUCH too loud, The Deano's Amp Booster Box takes care of that. DEFINITELY the most cost effective investment you can make for your tube amp, lets you really drive those tubes without blowing everybody off the stage (or driving your neighbours crazy!). This box is made of strong moulded plastic, all quality components are used, very well made and absolutely WILL NOT HURT YOUR AMP! Yes you CAN still use your effects loop for other devices while using the Deano's Amp Booster Box, just be sure to place the Box last in the loop and everything will work just fine! Box is very simple to use, no batteries to change or anything like that, just plug and play, well worth keeping in your case for that smaller gig I will not go anywhere without mine. If your amp does not use this system or is a Laney amp, this product will not work for you.
11. Zoom G2 effects pedal for sale. This is quite a clever enough piece of kit in its own right, but this one has addded tallents as its been programmed with Charlie Halls' Echoes from the Past (EFTP) software. This is a registered version with a serial number and its authenticity can be checked. It's only for sale as I am suffering from a severe case of GAS (guitar acquisition syndrome) having found the Stratocaster and bass of my dreams, so funds are needed. 12. Marshall Haze MHZ40C Combo Amp for sale. The amplifier is in A1 mint condition, never having left the house since I bought it from new and is only reluctantly being offered for sale as I am suffering from an extremely serious GAS attack (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome) having found both the Stratocaster of my dreams and a bass (Squier Classic Vibe Precision Bass in Butterscotch Blonde would be the only trade plus cash that I would be interested in) that I NEED to buy, so I really need to raise funds. When I first tried this amp I was extremely cynical about the combination of valve tone (yum) with digital effects (yuk!) however even my extremely fussy, audiophile ears were immediately won over by this fabulous amp. 13. Well, made it over to Andertons and twiddled on another 'Clarence' - he's definately the one for me. (For those of you confused by this stament, all is revealed in my 'Bass or amp - where should my money go?' thread on the Bass forum.) BUT this time I played plugged in for the first time ever! I asked for advice from the very helpful staff in the newly refitted store which is great, you can actually see the stock now, and got to try out the following amps in one of their new practice booths. Fender Rumble 30 - well it made a noise, unless you played a low E, but the noise appeared to me to be entirely devoid of any character or tone and I felt like ripping the Fender badge off it because my guitar amp is a Blues Deluxe and I know they can do sooo much better than that. Then I tried an Ashdown EB12 which actually had a bit of personality, and I loved the meter, but it seemed a bit overkill for a first ever, home use only amp. So then tried the Ashdown After 8 which was really rather a nice little thing. Less knobs than the EB12 - I want to be twiddling on the guitar not the amp - but for some reason I really felt the need to tilt it back all the time to give it a chance? Can you explain this? Unfortunately, the Ampeg Tourbusses and BA108s & 110s were nowhere to be seen in the store, had I had more time I'd have enquired further. Oh dear, I'll just have to make another visit, what a shame. I'll make it my mission to try out the Ampegs - to discover what the hell 'the Ampeg tone' actually is, and try out a Vox Pathfinder and Ashdown Perfect 10. Not that I've written off the Roland Bass Cube and Line 6 suggestions, just my experiences with Roland & Line 6 gutar amps have not been all that great. As for Hartke, again having trouble finding local shops who stock them, they seem a bit pricey and an aluminium cone combined with transistors makes me predict that nasty bright squeaky noises could easily be produced, but if I can find one I'll give it a try. Don't suppose anybody's come across anything on youtube with someone playing a P bass through a little Ampeg without a backing track drowning them out? Where are all the Ampeg dealers?? I've tried the Ampeg main website but when you look up the dealers on their list they don't actually seem to keep any stock. Anyway, thought I'd keep you updated.
14. Hi Everyone, - WARNING - NEWBIE ALERT!!! - I'm after advice on starter amps. I got some great suggestions from my 'where should my money go - bass or amp?' thread in bass section, and think I'm decided on the bass, but I'm having trouble tracking down the Ampegs suggested to try them out. Anyone know any Ampeg dealers in the Surrey / Hants / Sussex area? As I explained in my previous thread my problem is I have fussy ears, and if I don't like the tone I won't practice. So can you please give me an idiots guide to starter amps. I'd aspire to the valve tone of a Fender Bassman TV something having watched the Ed demo on Youtube, and this would appear to go along with the guitar amp I'd be playing alongside, that being a Fender Blues Deluxe (40w). The only other youtube video I've been vaguely impressed with is a Vox Pathfinder 10b. The other candidate being I guess, the Fender Rumble 15? My instincts tell me that to produce decent bass you'd need a 12-15 inch cone, can the the 2 x 5s actually pull it off, or will it get drowned out by the Blues Deluxe - though I must point out we are talking home practice only alongside a guitarist with the volume on 2. Still planning on investigating the Roland Cube too. What are your thoughts about starter amps in general and the Pathfinders, Rumbles and Cubes in particular?
15. Ooh, speaking of p/ups, what do you think is more important, the quality of the pickup (& associated circuitry) in the guitar, or the amp? - Sorry, back to my expensive ears and that TONE thing again.
16. Thanks for all the advice! I have been into a couple of shops and twiddled - just not plugged into anything - and have decided that 'Clarence' ticks all my boxes in terms of neck profile and radius, balances nicely (sadly Jazzs didn't, but I slightly preferrred the narrower nut width of the Jazz, not that the Precisions width was a problem at all), etc, etc, and of course looks. Unless Fender/Squire start doing a version of one of the glitzy, sparkly precisions Adam Clayton played at Glastonbury this year I don't think I'm going to be swayed by anything else. If the p/up does turn out to be crappy (though I have to say I love the Duncan Designed p/ups on my Squire VM Jazzmaster, Jaguar ones were horrible though!) I'll just upgrade it to a Bare Knuckes, Lollar or something similar, possibly improving the circuitary as I go. Thanks for the Ampeg suggestion, I've been doing lots of research into those as the thought of the valve preamp really appeals. My next question which should almost certainly be on the amp forum - sorry - is how small dare I go without getting lousy tone. The Ampeg B115T seems to get some bad press for having a hissy tweeter, would a B112 - no tweeter but keeps modelling selector switch, or even B110 or B108 be worth considering at all? Before you say it, yes I know these other models and the current B115 don't have the valve preamp anymore, but does anybody know why they dropped it? And, are the Fender Bassman amps, either the reissue or the TV range as good as they appear to be in the Youtube videos - anybody have any experience of them? I've seen a few on the second hand market going for virtually half price - should I be patient and wait to get one of those at a slightly more reasonable price? After all the tweed really would go with the 50s Butterscotch look, wouldn't it!
17. Wow! Thanks for the super-speedy fast replies chaps! Sorry, I should have mentioned that I'm talking home use only, no band aspirations or drummers to compete with, just one other guitarist. Budget - hmm, well that's what I'm trying to establish really. I might wait until I have enough to do it properly and maximise my chances of success, rather than rush in too cheap and scare myself off the whole idea. For arguments sake say £350-600?? Certainly not as much as a grand! I'm hoping to sell an amp for around £350+ and there is Christmas coming so you never know?? I don't want a bass that is too entry level in terms of quality - Squier Affinity - no, Squire Vintage Vibe / Fender Mexi - yes, Rickenbacker - when I win the lottery! Exellent condition s/h is fine, and I've just built my own Tele, so a Bitza would be possible once I've got a bit more knowledge about which bits to choose. Does anyone have any experience of 'Clarences' (Squier 50s vibe precision in butterscotch - so pine body)? It's the outlay on the amp that's stopping me. Which is the most important component for bass sound the amp or the guitar? The problem I have with buying a s/h amp is not knowing what the now discontinued models sound like, youtube often poses more questions than answers I find. I will have a look for little bastards though, and look into PJB Bass Buddy too. In terms of style and the sound I'm trying to get to, I'm thinking John Entwistle, John McVie (I want to play Oh Well on bass too!), John Illsley, Adam Clayton, McCartney & Wyman. Does that help? Thanks for the suggestions so far, please keep them coming!
18. Hi there, Another not-even-quite-a-newbie yet here, so apologies if I have stuck this on the wrong forum board. I'm a dabbling guitarist and I want to get a bass. Unfortunately I appear to have expensive ears in the sense that I am VERY fussy about tone, and if the tone aint right I get disheartened and just don't practice. This makes me extremely wary of the starter pack route, together with the fact that the affinity basses I've held are just a bit too toy-like in build quality for my liking. I have rather fallen for a Squier 50s vibe precision in butterscotch blonde (to be named Clarence - not that I'm jumping the gun at all here!) Unfortunately these seem to be rather thin on the ground in the s/h market at the moment. I would love to steam in and buy a new 'Clarence', but don't want to blow up my Fender Blues Deluxe guitar amp, so need to be sensible (boring) and work out what an amp is going to cost me first. My dilemma is as I seem to prefer classic 50s/60s Fender valve tone, so do I go down the traditional starters Rumble 15(+) route, which may just end up being a waste of money and turn me off playing bass completely, or should I hold fire and try to get hold of a Fender Bassman 10 or similar once they start to be seen on the s/h market? Should I try and find an old (pre pie-in-your-ears Peavey owned) Trace valve amp, or something else? It seems rather daft to spend double on the amp to the guitar which is what I'd end up doing if I buy new. This route would also end up costing me the best part of / slightly more than a grand, which I feel is rather a big outlay for a dabble at bass playing. Any suggestions? Kristina
