I wonder how these newer Sadowsky tuning pegs relate to Hipshot.

    https://www.thomann.de/gb/sadowsky_bass_tuner_light_1l_c.htm

Though they are on the cheap side, I have read they are super heavy (95 to 100 gr), as much as Schaller BM.

Maybe weight isn't such an important consideration if you like the Sadowsky brand. On the Thomann site it says they weigh 70g, or 81.5g including the sleeve and the screw (why would they list their weight separately?) which is still on the heavy side considering the USA Hipshot half inch post, clover head equivalent is 55g all in. Even Hipshot's licensed version is only a couple of grams heavier than their USA one. They claim their USAs are 'machined, finished and assembled' in the States, apart from the screws, which are ' sourced globally'. It doesn't say where the parts are cast, though. The licensed ones are made in South Korea. Pricewise, the Sadowskys aren't even a good deal really. They work out at £17.20 for a set of 4 including shipping, whereas at Bass Direct the Hipshots start at £16 and £28 each shipped for the licensed and USA respectively, depending on the finish (again based on a set of 4). If you're looking to save weight and money, the Hipshot licensed tuners still win hands down.

  2. As all the hardware and electronics seem to have been changed, it looks like all that's 'original' is the neck and the body. The front of the headstock is an odd shade, which could mean it's been stripped to change the decal.

Beautiful bass and great demo -though I'm not looking to buy another bass and I'm on the wrong side of the Atlantic currently, so just asking out of curiosity: does it have passive tone control too?

Thanks! The push/pull volume pot for active/passive is just for bypass in the event of the battery dying. The pan pot and coil tap still work, but there's no EQ.

I had a white Combustion and did exactly the same! I loved the look of the black hardware on the white. Gutted, another bass I was forced to sell :/

I was very fortunate to be on the Dingwall testing team and was one of the first to test out the prototype SFII and the FDV pickups. I'd already had Bothe the FD3n and FD3a pickups, so it was a lot of fun testing each!

(I still have the NFR's, so when I can get a Dingwall again, I will definitely be using them!)

Black hardware on a white bass - very cool!

How much did the tuners/bridges cost you ? I might do the same for the full hazard look.

The tuners were £129 for the set. Although the bass was already pretty well balanced, the USA Hipshots are quite a bit lighter than the licensed ones it came fitted with. The Babicz saddles were about £55 each. Not cheap, but they're rock solid, a big improvement on the old saddles.

  6. NOW SOLD

For sale is my Lakland 55-94 in translucent white, made in 2006. It has a light swamp ash body, with the grain visible through the finish, and a very pretty birdseye maple fingerboard. This combination of finishes and woods would almost certainly have been a custom order. It's fitted with the original Bartolini pickups and NTMB 3-band preamp. It also comes with pearl and tort scratchplates, plus a Hiscox LiteFlite case in excellent condition.

Ah Jesus, I am speechless - everything I'm currently lusting over in one instrument- graphite, 35", 19mm, Stingray Humbucker and jazz pickups and headless to boot, in a lovely colour.

I've no means of raising the cash, but it's a stunning instrument and that was some lovely playing in the demo

You're most kind. And you're only down the road. You're very welcome to come and have a look at it if you want - no obligation to buy! 🙂

  8. As good as my Combustion 5/3 was out of the box (bought new earlier this year) I've upgraded a few things - Super Fatty II pickups, black Hipshot USA tuners, and Babicz bridge saddles. Worthwhile improvements to an already great bass.

I mean - these are excellent instruments & the through-neck Thunder IIs & IIIs have appreciated, but Westones were never regarded as sought-after or pro instruments.

Whaddayamean? Henry Thomas used one on Rock School on the telly in the 80's! 🙂

Well, yesterday to be strictly accurate. Went down to visit @lowregisterhead and have a little chat and a try of the instrument in question, then headed home.

It's got a neck which I immediately got on with - I'm not sure what the best description of the profile is, if I say "oil tanker hull" then people may get the idea. Fan frets are fine, this is the first I've owned but I have played them in the past and knew they wouldn't be an issue. I'm a fan of headless basses too.

This particular one has been updated with Aguilar pickups. The demos I've heard with the original Bartolinis didn't seem as clear and crisp as the Aguilars do. The annoying bloke with the lobster hand did the same upgrade on the base model EHB1005 which was a noticeable improvement. The preamp is very flexible with not just stacked bass and treble but also mid cut/boost and mid sweep, and playing with that showed it to be very effective. All in all, a very impressive instrument.

Thanks to Dave for the hospitality and the bass.

Thanks for making the journey, Mike. Enjoy the bass!
