Ludicrous price for a dog's dinner of a bass!  There are plenty of Pre EB Rays that are in perfectly good nick and they are cheaper than that.  Why would you pay more to then have to refinish and lose even more money?

Yup. The seller seems to think it's a USP, which it is I suppose, just not a positive one in most people's estimation, I'll wager...

He’s done a good job with that white body it’s looks lovely - really nice! I’d love a US 55/94 but it’ll be a while yet - what’s the second switch for on the 94, I’m guessing it’s active/passive switch rather than push/pull on the volume maybe.?

No, it has a Bartolini NTMB preamp with active/passive push/pull on the volume control - the second switch is for red neck-edge LEDs, which were installed by a previous owner. I’ll add a picture of them shortly.

  3. My recently resurrected Lakland SK-5CL Skyline Japan, an ESP licensed version of their Skyline model, made for the Japanese market. I picked it up on here cheap a couple of years ago, but the pickups and electronics were uninspiring, and it had quite a few big chips and dings in the finish, so I dismantled it and sent the body off to be resprayed. But on the way there, somehow the courier lost it!! After much arguing via phone and email, they finally gave me the princely sum of £100 in compensation. Despite numerous emails, I couldn't get either ESP or Lakland to supply a replacement body, so I stuck the neck and the hardware in a corner and forgot about them.

Months passed, and I stumbled on the bits again, so I decided to see if I could get a custom body made. The few places I found online quoted me a lot more for a body than the whole bass had cost me in the first place, so I parked the idea again. Then I came across a chap who reckoned he could make an accurate copy of the Lakland 55-94 / 55-02 body, which was assumed to be pretty much identical to the ESP version. There were no guarantees, and nothing to compare them with, but despite the fact he lived a very long way from me, I decided to take a punt and go ahead anyway. Much measuring of the neck end, pickup positions etc. went on, numerous photos were sent by email, and paper patterns sent by post. It took a while, but a solid mahogany body was fashioned and finished in satin white. When it arrived I expected there might be a few issues, but apart from a tiny bit of careful trimming to one corner of the neck pocket, much to my relief everything was an excellent fit. I managed to install the bridge, pickups and electronics without too much drama (a new Glockenklang 3-band preamp and Delano pickups) and it plays beautifully and sounds huge. It's even managed to unseat my Pearl White DJ5 (now for sale in the classifieds). In the intervening period I picked up a late-90s 55-94 as well (also pictured below) but they're very different animals, so I'll be hanging on to both of them. An excellent 'new' bass has risen from the ashes of a rather tired one!

  4. For sale is my Lakland DJ5 in pearl white with matching headstock, fitted with Nordstrand pickups and a John East DJ Retro preamp. The Bartolini pickups it came to me fitted with are also included in the sale. Light (4.1kg), well balanced, so easy to play, and the legendary Lakland B string. Excellent condition, completely unmarked apart from the tiniest dink in the edge of the paint on the headstock shown in the photographs, no visible fret wear. I just find I play my other Laklands more, so I've decided to move it on.

Tort and pearl scratchplates and gigbag included. Collection from near Woking in Surrey preferred, but can be shipped at the buyer's risk and cost. Sorry, no trades please.

  5. Offered tentatively for sale is my Dingwall ABII in Olive Green, chambered body, Ovangkol neck, FDV pickups with coil tap switches, and a Glockenklang 3-band preamp, in immaculate condition. Light (3.9kg), well balanced and beautifully resonant, with a huge array of tones from the pickup selector and coil taps.

It was originally owned by George Baldwin, and this very bass can be seen and heard being played by him on Dingwall's YouTube channel. I bought it last year, but as I now also have a Lee Sklar signature, I can't really justify keeping both, so unfortunately this one has to go.

Dingwall Music Area Deluxe gigbag included, also in pristine condition. Collection preferred from near Woking in Surrey, or can be shipped at the buyer's risk and cost. Sorry, no trades please.

Considering putting it up for commission sale somewhere else, so price drop to £3500 - be quick before I do!

  7. For sale is my Markbass ultra-lightweight MB58R 102 Energy 8 ohm 210 cab. I only bought it recently, but I'm gigging very infrequently now, and likely to be on IEMs when I do, so it's going to be surplus to requirements. It's only been out of the house two or three times, and always used with another cabinet so it's never been driven hard. I had it up for sale before and withdrew it, but I'm really not going to use it, so it needs to go.

    Specs are here:

I've got the 1265MS, the fancy wood version. One of the previous owners had swapped the pickups for Aguilar DCBs and they're fine - I bought it from @lowregisterhead but I think it was the original owner who did the swap.

I bought the 1265 new that you got from me @tauzero and also fitted the Aguilar DCB D4 pickups. I just thought the stock Barts were really bland, and I found the Aggies had much more punch and detail. I tried two of the 1005s in Andertons when they first came out, and for me they were pretty flat sounding, perhaps due in part to the basswood body. They also both had some QC issues, as well as a couple of really obvious dead spots.

The 1005s have maple/walnut necks and basswood bodies, whereas the 1505 and 1265 have pangapanga/walnut necks and mahogany bodies with poplar burl or  walnut tops, which I think makes a big difference.

I still think it’s a cool design, but the reason I moved it on was that even though I’m involved in a few very different band and projects, the bass wasn’t really a good fit for any of them. The guys in the blues band I play in hated the look of it! 😆 The other reason was that I quite like a bass with a bit of heft to it, and I actually found the EHB being so light and compact difficult to get used to.

I’m still a fan of headless basses - I took delivery of a new Status S23 a couple of weeks ago. There a short review and video here:
