  1. Edit 11 May : **Temporarily withdrawn from sale** **EDIT 17 April : Price dropped to £1600. Also, I'm often up and down between Edinburgh and Manchester so a meet up in either city or somewhere along the M8/M74/M6 is also possible*** I guess it's ok to call this 'vintage' at 42 years old. I'm selling because this is playing second place to my '74 these days and really not getting out as much as it deserves - and I have my eye on something. Pickguard still has the matching serial number sticker underneath. It's got a Badass II fitted - the one with the three pre-cast string grooves. The original bridge, bridge screws and bridge cover are included with the sale. There is a non-original pickup cover also included. When you look closely you can see some of the dinks that have been picked up over the years but the natural finish disguises it well. A previous owner had put a hole (presumably for thumb rest) which has been filled but still visible. The back of the neck has been very lightly sanded which helps avoid the stickiness you get with '70s varnish and sweaty hands. The neck is quite narrow at the nut for a precision (1 & 11/16 inches) - not quite jazz narrow but certainly narrower that on a 50's or 60's P-Bass - is this what they call a 'B'-width neck?. As a result of it's thicker base plate, the Badass II bridge required a shim for the neck in order to keep the action low - professionally fitted by Robert Mould at GuitarGuitar Edinburgh - this is a totally reversible modification. Includes a flight case. According to the bathroom scales, it weighs 10.5lbs. Ideally looking for face to face sale - if you are in Edinburgh, please pop over, have a coffee and try it out.
  2. Kenny's are still doing the PF20-t at £299 so I pulled the trigger on it a couple of weeks ago (next day free delivery). Loving it so far.
  3. Been thinking about a compact low wattage/valvey set up for home practice for a while. Two things happened over the last fortnight that turned it into a reality : Local dealer dropped the new price on the Ampeg PF20-T and then these two Ashdown cabs came up for sale 2nd hand just along the road from someone who it turns out is a friend of a friend. The cabs are RM110's but they've had Ashdown CL/AAA red grilles added which I think makes them look pretty classy. In fact it's pretty enough that I'm allowed to keep it in the dining room and don't have to relegate it to the spare room! Sounds-wise is really lovely and warm - especially with my flatwound loaded P with the tone nearly all the way off. Perfect output and volume for home practice as I can get the tone without waking the neighbourhood. I'm a happy bunny.
  4. any more puns like these and one of us will get Das Boot
  5. This cheeky wee beastie came into my life last year - 1979 Guild B301A-F. Not the most inspired name for a bass, but plays and sounds a dream.
  6. Thanks all for your thoughts on this. I'm going with the glass half full view on it. I love it, plays like a dream and looks awesome. And I've got the cover note from Fender if I decide to sell in the future.
  7. Hey all. I sent the photo onto Fender Consumer Relations who have responded swiftly and advised (in writing) that it has been a "mis-build" - a rare occurrence but the second time they've seen it on a 70's spec Jazz. GuitarGuitar Edinburgh have also been fab (as usual) and offered me a straight swap to a replacement - they currently have these in stock and have spot checked a couple to confirm correct spec. With this written confirmation from Fender, I'm comfortable keeping this f*ckup. In fact we're becoming quite inseparable. Here it is with all the bling removed (much as I love the look, it does get in the way)...
  8. The guy I know at GG isn't in today and I emailed him directly - I have every confidence in GG in Edinburgh so there's no worries on that front. I've dropped Fender UK an email querying the spec. All I can think about now is Lollipop tuners. They really would set this off looking like a 68/69.
  9. In fact I'm gonna float this one past the Fender UK Facebook page to see what they reckon...
  10. Okay - so in summary I appear to have purchased some sort of AVRI Frankenbass which is all very strange given that it's brand spanking new: From the 64 AVRI: Sunburst pattern (brighter), nitro finish, tort guard, lower mounted tug bar, neck plate with the serial number stamp (no "F" stamp on neck plate) From the 74 AVRI: 74 routing for bridge pickup, Single slot bridge barrels, U shape bound/block neck, Large TV logo, "Fender" stamped 70s tuners Maybe Fender had a few odds and ends left of each AVRI before they switched over to making the new "American Original" series? Be interesting to get Fender to comment on this one.
  11. Good shout - I've dropped a note to GG accordingly. Maybe all this needs is a set of lollypop tuners to completely confuse the vintage.
  12. Oooooh hang on though....I think this might mean I have a nitro finish body rather than poly (a good thing). It certainly has a smell to it.
  13. Singly slot bridge barrels (correct for 70s)
  14. Hiya LewisK1975 - that's what I was thinking....but the bridge pickup routing is correct for a 74 (the pickup would protrude more from under the ashtray on a 64) so it really is strange. I'm comfortable with an oddity as I love the way it plays and sounds so not thinking of sending it back.
  15. Hey folks, Decided to take advantage of GuitarGuitar reducing the prices on their AVRI range now that the American Original series have landed. Bagged this 74 AVRI for American Standard/Pro money. Couple of oddities though - tug bar below the strings rather than in thumb rest position and a tort guard rather than black. Everything else stacks up as it should (including certificate, serial number, neck profile, bridge pickup position, case candy etc). Any ideas? Just random change of spec?
